Raman Scattering Reveals Strong Lo-Phonon-Hole-Plasmon Coupling In Nominally Undoped Gaasbi: Optical Determination Of Carrier Concentration, Julian Steele, R A. Lewis, M Henini, O M. Lemine, D. Fan, Yu. I. Mazur, V G. Dorogan, P C. Grant, S Q. Yu, G J. Salamo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We report room-temperature Raman scattering studies of nominally undoped (100) GaAs1−xBix epitaxial layers exhibiting Bi-induced (p-type) longitudinal-optical-plasmon-coupled (LOPC) modes for 0.018 ≤ x ≤ 0.048. Redshifts in the GaAs-like optical modes due to alloying are evaluated and are paralleled by strong damping of the LOPC. The relative integrated Raman intensities of LO(Γ) and LOPC ALO/ALOPC are characteristic of heavily doped p-GaAs, with a remarkable near total screening of the LO(Γ) phonon (ALO/ALOPC → 0) for larger Bi concentrations. A method of spectral analysis is set out which yields estimates of hole concentrations in excess of 5 × 1017cm−3 and correlates …

A Review Of Data Quality Assessment Methods For Public Health Information Systems, Hong Chen, David Hailey, Ning Wang, Ping Yu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

High quality data and effective data quality assessment are required for accurately evaluating the impact of public health interventions and measuring public health outcomes. Data, data use, and data collection process, as the three dimensions of data quality, all need to be assessed for overall data quality assessment. We reviewed current data quality assessment methods. The relevant study was identified in major databases and well-known institutional websites. We found the dimension of data was most frequently assessed. Completeness, accuracy, and timeliness were the three most-used attributes among a total of 49 attributes of data quality. The major quantitative assessment methods …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Data transfer is a transmission of data over a point-to-point or point-to-multipoint communication channel. To protect the confidentiality of the transferred data, public-key cryptography has been introduced in data transfer schemes (DTSs). Data transfer is a transmission of data over a point-to-point or point-to-multipoint communication channel. To protect the confidentiality of the transferred data, public-key cryptography has been introduced in data transfer schemes (DTSs). Unfortunately, there exist some drawbacks in the current DTSs. First, the sender must know who the real receivers are. This is undesirable in a system where the number of the users is very large, such as …

A Robust Smart Card-Based Anonymous User Authentication Protocol For Wireless Communications, Fengtong Wen, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang Jan 2014

A Robust Smart Card-Based Anonymous User Authentication Protocol For Wireless Communications, Fengtong Wen, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Anonymous user authentication is an important but challenging task for wireless communications. In a recent paper, Das proposed a smart card-based anonymous user authentication protocol for wireless communications. The scheme can protect user privacy and is believed to be secure against a range of network attacks even if the secret information stored in the smart card is compromised. In this paper, we reanalyze the security of Das’ scheme, and show that the scheme is in fact insecure against impersonation attacks. We then propose a new smart card-based anonymous user authentication protocol for wireless communications. Compared with the existing schemes, our …

Exact And Approximate Solutions For Options With Time-Dependent Stochastic Volatility, Joanna Goard Jan 2014

Exact And Approximate Solutions For Options With Time-Dependent Stochastic Volatility, Joanna Goard

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper it is shown how symmetry methods can be used to find exact solutions for European option pricing under a time-dependent 3/2-stochastic volatility model View the MathML source. This model with A(t) constant has been proven by many authors to outperform the Heston model in its ability to capture the behaviour of volatility and fit option prices. Further, singular perturbation techniques are used to derive a simple analytic approximation suitable for pricing options with short tenor, a common feature of most options traded in the market.

Climate Change Mitigation With Integration Of Renewable Energy Resources In The Electricity Grid Of New South Wales, Australia, Md Abu Abdullah, Ashish Agalgaonkar, Kashem M. Muttaqi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The implementation of climate change mitigation strategies may significantly affect the current practices for electricity network operation. Increasing penetration of renewable energy generation technologies into electricity networks is one of the key mitigation strategies to achieve greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. Additional climate change mitigation strategies can also contribute to emission reduction thereby supplementing the renewable energy generation participation, which may be limited due to technical constraints of the network. In this paper, the penetration requirements for different renewable energy generation resources are assessed while concurrently examining other mitigation strategies to reduce overall emissions from electricity networks and meet requisite …

Smoke Detection In Video: An Image Separation Approach, Hongda Tian, Wanqing Li, Lei Wang, Philip Ogunbona Jan 2014

Smoke Detection In Video: An Image Separation Approach, Hongda Tian, Wanqing Li, Lei Wang, Philip Ogunbona

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Existing video-based smoke detection methods often rely on the visual features extracted directly from the original frames. In the case of light smoke, the background is still visible and it deteriorates the quality of the features. This paper presents an approach to separating the smoke component from the background such that visual features can be extracted from the smoke component for reliable smoke detection. Specifically, an image is assumed to be a linear blending of a smoke component and a background image. Given a video frame and its background, the estimation of the blending parameter and the actual smoke component …

Power Allocation Algorithm In Ofdm-Based Cognitive Radio Systems, Van Vinh Nguyen, Yang Shouyi, Le Chung Tran

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based cognitive radio (CR) systems, the optimized algorithms for sub-carrier power allocation face the problems of complex iterative calculation and difficult realization. In this paper, we propose an exponential power distribution function and derive a sub-optimal power allocation algorithm. This algorithm aims to allocate power of in-band subcarriers of cognitive users according to the numerical characteristics of the power distribution function by using a convex optimization numerical method under linear constraints. This algorithm has the advantages of fast calculation speed and easy realization, and reduces the interference to the authorized users, which is caused by …

Transmit Antenna Subset Selection For High-Rate Mimo-Ofdm Systems In The Presence Of Nonlinear Power Amplifiers, Phuc Ngoc Le, Farzad Safaei, Le Chung Tran Jan 2014

Transmit Antenna Subset Selection For High-Rate Mimo-Ofdm Systems In The Presence Of Nonlinear Power Amplifiers, Phuc Ngoc Le, Farzad Safaei, Le Chung Tran

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The deployment of antenna subset selection on a per-subcarrier basis in MIMO-OFDM systems could improve the system performance and/or increase data rates. This paper investigates this technique for the MIMO-OFDM systems suffering nonlinear distortions due to high-power amplifiers. At first, some problems pertaining to the implementation of this antenna selection approach, including power imbalance across transmit antennas and non-causality of per-subcarrier antenna selection criteria, are identified. Next, an optimal selection scheme is devised by means of linear optimization to overcome those disadvantages. This scheme optimally allocates data subcarriers under a constraint that all antennas have the same number of data …

Equilibrium States On The Cuntz-Pimsner Algebras Of Self-Similar Actions, Marcelo Laca, Iain Raeburn, Jacqui Ramagge, Michael Whittaker Jan 2014

Equilibrium States On The Cuntz-Pimsner Algebras Of Self-Similar Actions, Marcelo Laca, Iain Raeburn, Jacqui Ramagge, Michael Whittaker

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We consider a family of Cuntz-Pimsner algebras associated to self-similar group actions, and their Toeplitz analogues. Both families carry natural dynamics implemented by automorphic actions of the real line, and we investigate the equilibrium states (the KMS states) for these dynamical systems. We find that for all inverse temperatures above a critical value, the KMS states on the Toeplitz algebra are given, in a very concrete way, by traces on the full group algebra of the group. At the critical inverse temperature, the KMS states factor through states of the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra; if the self-similar group is contracting, then the …

Lithium Migration In Li4ti5o12 Studied Using In-Situ Neutron Powder Diffraction, Wei Kong Pang, Vanessa Peterson, Neeraj Sharma, Je-Jang Shiu, She-Huang Wu Jan 2014

Lithium Migration In Li4ti5o12 Studied Using In-Situ Neutron Powder Diffraction, Wei Kong Pang, Vanessa Peterson, Neeraj Sharma, Je-Jang Shiu, She-Huang Wu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We used in situ neutron powder diffraction (NPD) to study the migration of Li in Li4Ti5O12 anodes with different particle sizes during battery cycling. The motivation of this work was to uncover the mechanism of the increased capacity of the battery made with a smaller-particle-sized anode. In real time, we monitored the anode lattice parameter, Li distribution, and oxidation state of the Ti atom, and these suggested an increase in the rate of Li incorporation into the anode rather than a change in the migration pathway as a result of the particle size reduction. The lattice of these anodes during …

A Novel Membrane Distillation-Thermophilic Bioreactor System: Biological Stability And Trace Organic Compound Removal, Kaushalya Wijekoon, Faisal Ibney Hai, Jinguo Kang, William Price, Wenshan Guo, Hao H. Ngo, Tzahi Cath, Long Nghiem Jan 2014

A Novel Membrane Distillation-Thermophilic Bioreactor System: Biological Stability And Trace Organic Compound Removal, Kaushalya Wijekoon, Faisal Ibney Hai, Jinguo Kang, William Price, Wenshan Guo, Hao H. Ngo, Tzahi Cath, Long Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The removal of trace organic compounds (TrOCs) by a novel membrane distillation-thermophilic bioreactor (MDBR) system was examined. Salinity build-up and the thermophilic conditions to some extent adversely impacted the performance of the bioreactor, particularly the removal of total nitrogen and recalcitrant TrOCs. While most TrOCs were well removed by the thermophilic bioreactor, compounds containing electron withdrawing functional groups in their molecular structure were recalcitrant to biological treatment and their removal efficiency by the thermophilic bioreactor was low (0-53%). However, the overall performance of the novel MDBR system with respect to the removal of total organic carbon, total nitrogen, and TrOCs …

Removal And Fate Of Micropollutants In A Sponge-Based Moving Bed Bioreactor, Yunlong Luo, Wenshan Guo, Huu H. Ngo, Long Nghiem, Faisal Ibney Hai, Jinguo Kang, Siqing Xia, Zhiqiang Zhang, William Price Jan 2014

Removal And Fate Of Micropollutants In A Sponge-Based Moving Bed Bioreactor, Yunlong Luo, Wenshan Guo, Huu H. Ngo, Long Nghiem, Faisal Ibney Hai, Jinguo Kang, Siqing Xia, Zhiqiang Zhang, William Price

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study investigated the removal of micropollutants using polyurethane sponge as attached-growth carrier. Batch experiments demonstrated that micropollutants could adsorb to non-acclimatized sponge cubes to varying extents. Acclimatized sponge showed significantly enhanced removal of some less hydrophobic compounds (logD < 2.5), such as ibuprofen, acetaminophen, naproxen, and estriol, as compared with non-acclimatized sponge. The results for bench-scale sponge-based moving bed bioreactor (MBBR) system elucidated compound-specific variation in removal, ranging from 25.9% (carbamazepine) to 96.8% (b-Estradiol 17-acetate) on average. In the MBBR system, biodegradation served as a major removal pathway for most compounds. However, sorption to sludge phase was also a notable removal mechanism of some persistent micropollutants. Particularly, carbamazepine, ketoprofen and pentachlorophenol were found at high concentrations (7.87, 6.05 and 5.55 lg/g, respectively) on suspended biosolids. As a whole, the effectiveness of MBBR for micropollutant removal was comparable with those of activated sludge processes and MBRs.

A Groupoid Generalisation Of Leavitt Path Algebras, Lisa Orloff Clark, Cynthia Farthing, Aidan Sims, Mark Tomforde Jan 2014

A Groupoid Generalisation Of Leavitt Path Algebras, Lisa Orloff Clark, Cynthia Farthing, Aidan Sims, Mark Tomforde

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Let G be a locally compact, Hausdorff, étale groupoid whose unit space is totally disconnected. We show that the collection A(G) of locally-constant, compactly supported complex-valued functions on G is a dense ∗-subalgebra of Cc(G) and that it is universal for algebraic representations of the collection of compact open bisections of G. We also show that if G is the groupoid associated to a row-finite graph or k-graph with no sources, then A(G) is isomorphic to the associated Leavitt path algebra or Kumjian–Pask algebra. We prove versions of the Cuntz–Krieger and graded uniqueness theorems for A(G).

Aperiodicity And Primitive Ideals Of Row-Finite K-Graphs, Sooran Kang, David Pask Jan 2014

Aperiodicity And Primitive Ideals Of Row-Finite K-Graphs, Sooran Kang, David Pask

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We describe the primitive ideal space of the C*-algebra of a row-finite k-graph with no sources when every ideal is gauge invariant. We characterize which spectral spaces can occur, and compute the primitive ideal space of two examples. In order to do this we prove some new results on aperiodicity. Our computations indicate that when every ideal is gauge invariant, the primitive ideal space only depends on the 1-skeleton of the k-graph in question. 2014 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Ozonation Of N-Nitrosamines In The Reverse Osmosis Concentrate From Water Recycling Applications, Takahiro Fujioka, Stuart Khan, James Mcdonald, Long Nghiem Jan 2014

Ozonation Of N-Nitrosamines In The Reverse Osmosis Concentrate From Water Recycling Applications, Takahiro Fujioka, Stuart Khan, James Mcdonald, Long Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study aims to evaluate the performance of ozone treatment for removing N-nitrosamines from reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate in water recycling applications. In the absence of any N-nitrosamine precursors, the destruction efficiency of N-nitrosamines was dependent on their molecular weight or the length of the alkyl chain in their molecular structure. Experiments conducted with RO concentrate showed that ozonation could lead to the formation of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA), resulting in an increase in concentrations of these N-nitrosamines. Nevertheless, ozonation was effective for destruction of N-nitrosamines with molecular weight greater than that of NDEA (102 g/mol). 2014 Copyright 2014 …

Group Actions On Labeled Graphs And Their C*-Algebras, Teresa Bates, David Pask, Paulette Willis Jan 2014

Group Actions On Labeled Graphs And Their C*-Algebras, Teresa Bates, David Pask, Paulette Willis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We introduce the notion of the action of a group on a labeled graph and the quotient object, also a labeled graph. We define a skew product labeled graph and use it to prove a version of the Gross–Tucker theorem for labeled graphs. We then apply these results to the C -algebra associated to a labeled graph and provide some applications in non-Abelian duality.

(Strong) Multidesignated Verifiers Signatures Secure Against Rogue Key Attack, Man Ho Au, Guomin Yang, Willy Susilo, Yunmei Zhang Jan 2014

(Strong) Multidesignated Verifiers Signatures Secure Against Rogue Key Attack, Man Ho Au, Guomin Yang, Willy Susilo, Yunmei Zhang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Designated verifier signatures (DVS) allow a signer to create a signature whose validity can only be verified by a specific entity chosen by the signer. In addition, the chosen entity, known as the designated verifier, cannot convince any body that the signature is created by the signer. Multidesignated verifiers signatures (MDVS) are a natural extension of DVS in which the signer can choose multiple designated verifiers. DVS and MDVS are useful primitives in electronic voting and contract signing. In this paper, we investigate various aspects of MDVS and make two contributions. Firstly, we revisit the notion of unforgeability under rogue …

Analysis Of Subsynchronous Torsional Interaction Of Hvdc System Integrated Hydro Units With Small Generator-To-Turbine Inertia Ratios, Yin Chin Choo, Ashish Agalgaonkar, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Sarath Perera, Michael Negnevitsky Jan 2014

Analysis Of Subsynchronous Torsional Interaction Of Hvdc System Integrated Hydro Units With Small Generator-To-Turbine Inertia Ratios, Yin Chin Choo, Ashish Agalgaonkar, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Sarath Perera, Michael Negnevitsky

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The constant current controllers at high voltage direct current (HVDC) rectifier stations and the outer loops which set the reference to the current controller have potential to introduce negative damping on the nearby generating units. It is therefore vital to investigate the torsional interaction behavior between turbine-generator (TG) units and the HVDC systems over a frequency range of interest. In this paper, subsynchronous torsional interaction (SSTI) phenomenon for hydroelectric TG units with small generator-to-turbine inertia (GTI) ratios interconnected to an HVDC system has been investigated. The sensitivity of different system parameters, such as generating capacity and loading, DC power flow, …

Abnormal Ductility Increase Of Commercial Purity Al During Accumulative Roll Bonding, Kuiyu Cheng, Cheng Lu, Kiet Tieu Jan 2014

Abnormal Ductility Increase Of Commercial Purity Al During Accumulative Roll Bonding, Kuiyu Cheng, Cheng Lu, Kiet Tieu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, sheets of commercial purity Al were fabricated by the accumulative roll-bonding (ARB) method up to six cycles. To increase the shear deformation, no lubricant was used during the ARB processing and the samples were carried out for ARB processing without any preheat treatment. One interesting finding is that the ductility and strength both increased during the first several cycles of ARB processing. It is proposed that the initial rolling texture might play an important part in the subsequent ARB processing since the original Al sheets for ARB processing have not been subjected to any annealing. The microstructures …

Design And Development Of A Novel Displacement Differential Self-Induced Magnetorheological Damper, Guoliang Hu, Yi Ru, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This article presents the development of a novel magnetorheological damper which has a self-sensing ability. In this study, a linear variable differential sensor, which was based on the electromagnetic induction mechanism, was integrated with a conventional magnetorheological damper. The working principle, configuration, and prototype of the displacement differential self-induced magnetorheological damper based on the integrated linear variable differential sensor technology were presented. A mathematical model of the proposed displacement differential self-induced magnetorheological damper was established. The finite element model was built with two-dimensional Maxwell software and the magnetic simulations were presented. With this approach, the influence of the flux leakage, …

Potassium-Uracil/Thymine Ring Cleavage Enhancement As Studied In Electron Transfer Experiments And Theoretical Calculations, D Almeida, M.-C. Bacchus-Montabonel, F Ferreira Da Silva, G Garcia, P Limao-Vieira

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We report experimental and theoretical studies on ring cleavage enhancement in collisions of potassium atoms with uracil/thymine in order to further increase the understanding of the complex mechanisms yielding such fragmentation pathways. In these electron transfer processes time-of-flight (TOF) negative ion mass spectra were obtained in the collision energy range 13.5 – 23.0 eV. We note that CNO– is the major ring breaking anion formed and its threshold formation is discussed within the collision energy range studied. Such decomposition process is supported by the first theoretical calculations in order to clarify how DNA/RNA pyrimidine bases fragmentation is enhanced in electron …

Role Of Microstructure In Susceptibility To Hydrogen Embrittlement Of X70 Microalloyed Steel, Daniel Hejazi, Ahmed Saleh, Ayesha Haq, Druce Dunne, Andrzej Calka, Azdiar A. Gazder, Elena V. Pereloma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The effect of phases and steel processing on hydrogen uptake (diffusible and residual), surface and internal damage were evaluated using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The results have shown the fastest formation of blisters in ferrite-pearlite microstructure of strip, followed by equaixed ferrite-pearlite microstructure in normalised condition, then by ferrite-bainite microstructure. No blistering was observed in heat affected zone samples for up to 24 hrs charging. Analysis of hydrogen-induced cracking using electron back scattering diffraction has revealed that crack propagation has predominantly intragranular character without a clear preference on {001}, {110}, {112} and {123} planes and is independent of the …

This study investigated effects of mature compost on gaseous emissions during composting using pig manure amended with corn stalks. Apart from a control treatment, three treatments were conducted with the addition of 5% (wet weight of raw materials) of mature compost: (a) mixing raw materials with mature compost at the beginning of composting; (b) covering raw materials with mature compost throughout the experimental period; and (c) covering raw materials with mature compost at the start of composting, but incorporating it into composting pile on day 6 of composting. Mature compost used for the last treatment was inoculated with 2% (wet …

A Novel Approach For Ramp-Rate Control Of Solar Pv Using Energy Storage To Mitigate Output Fluctuations Caused By Cloud Passing, M J. E Alam, K M. Muttaqi, D Sutanto Jan 2014

A Novel Approach For Ramp-Rate Control Of Solar Pv Using Energy Storage To Mitigate Output Fluctuations Caused By Cloud Passing, M J. E Alam, K M. Muttaqi, D Sutanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The variability of solar irradiance with a high ramp-rate, caused by cloud passing, can create fluctuation in the PV output. In a weak distribution grid with a high PV penetration, this can create significant voltage fluctuations. Energy storage devices are used to smooth out the fluctuation using traditional moving average control. However, moving average does not control the ramp-rate directly; rather the ramp-rate depends on previous values of PV output. This paper proposes a strategy where the ramp-rate of PV panel output is used to control the PV inverter ramp-rate to a desired level by deploying energy storage (which can …

Impact Of Ballast Fouling On Rail Tracks, N Tennakoon, B Indraratna, S Nimbalkar Jan 2014

Impact Of Ballast Fouling On Rail Tracks, N Tennakoon, B Indraratna, S Nimbalkar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Ballast fouling is understood as major cause of track deterioration in many countries over the world. It decreases the drainage and load bearing capacity of the ballast layer. A series of large scale hydraulic conductivity tests were conducted with different proportions of fouling to access the drainage capacity of the track. A numerical analysis was conducted using SEEP/W to quantify the drainage capacity of ballast under different degrees of fouling. Subsequently, track drainage classification in relation to the degree of fouling, which is a very useful tool for practical engineers, is presented in this paper. The analysis showed that both …

Semi-Analytical Solutions For The Reversible Selkov Model With Feedback Delay, Khaled. Al Noufaey, Timothy Marchant Jan 2014

Semi-Analytical Solutions For The Reversible Selkov Model With Feedback Delay, Khaled. Al Noufaey, Timothy Marchant

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Semi-analytical solutions for the reversible Selkov, or glycolytic oscillations model, are considered. The model is coupled with feedback at the boundary and considered in one-dimensional reaction-diffusion cell. This experimentally feasible scenario is analogous to feedback scenarios in a continuously stirred tank reactor. The Galerkin method is applied, which approximates the spatial structure of both the reactant and autocatalyst concentrations. This approach is used to obtain a lower-order, ordinary differential equation model for the system of governing equations. Steady-state solutions, bifurcation diagrams and the region of parameter space, in which Hopf bifurcations occur, are all found. The effect of feedback strength …

Enhancement Of Trace Organic Contaminant Degradation By Crude Enzyme Extract From Trametes Versicolor Culture: Effect Of Mediator Type And Concentration, Ngoc Luong Nguyen, Faisal Ibney Hai, Jinguo Kang, Frederic Leusch, Felicity Roddick, S Faraj Magram, William Price, Long Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The performance of two redox mediating compounds, namely 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT) and syringaldehyde (SA), was compared in terms of enhancement of enzymatic degradation of a diverse set of 14 phenolic and 16 non-phenolic trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) and the toxicity of the treated media. Extracellular enzyme extract (predominantly containing laccase) from Trametes versicolor culture achieved efficient degradation (70-95%) of nine phenolic and one non-phenolic TrOCs. Mediator dosing extended the spectrum of efficiently degraded TrOCs to 13 phenolic and three non-phenolic compounds, with moderate improvements in removal of a few other non-phenolic compounds. TrOC removal efficiency improved significantly as the HBT dose …

A Mathematical Analysis Of A Membrane Bioreactor Containing A Sludge Disintegration System, Mark Nelson, Thomas Yue Jan 2014

A Mathematical Analysis Of A Membrane Bioreactor Containing A Sludge Disintegration System, Mark Nelson, Thomas Yue

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The activated sludge process is widely used to treat domestic and industrial wastewater. A significant drawback of this process is the production of "sludge", the disposal of which can comprise a significant proportion of the total operating costs of a wastewater treatment plant. We analyze the steady-state operation of a membrane bioreactor system (MBR) incorporating a sludge disintegration unit (SDU) to reduce sludge production. We provide a qualitative understanding of the model by finding analytically the steady-state solutions of the model and determining its stability as a function of the residence time. In practice a target value of the mixed …
