An Approximation Method For Improving Dynamic Network Model Fitting, Nicole B. Carnegie, Pavel N. Krivitsky, David R. Hunter, Steven M. Goodreau Jan 2014

An Approximation Method For Improving Dynamic Network Model Fitting, Nicole B. Carnegie, Pavel N. Krivitsky, David R. Hunter, Steven M. Goodreau

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

There has been a great deal of interest recently in the modeling and simulation of dynamic networks, i.e., networks that change over time. One promising model is the separable temporal exponential-family random graph model (ERGM) of Krivitsky and Handcock, which treats the formation and dissolution of ties in parallel at each time step as independent ERGMs. However, the computational cost of fitting these models can be substantial, particularly for large, sparse networks. Fitting cross-sectional models for observations of a network at a single point in time, while still a non-negligible computational burden, is much easier. This paper examines model fitting …

Transforming Decision-Making Processes: A Research Agenda For Understanding The Impact Of Business Analytics On Organisations, Rajeev Sharma, Sunil Mithas, Atreyi Kankanhalli

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Much attention is currently being paid in both the academic and practitioner literatures to the value that organisations could create through the use of big data and business analytics (Gillon et al, 2012; Mithas et al, 2013). For instance, Chen et al (2012, p. 1166–1168) suggest that business analytics and related technologies can help organisations to ‘better understand its business and markets’ and ‘leverage opportunities presented by abundant data and domain-specific analytics’. Similarly, LaValle et al (2011, p. 22) report that top-performing organisations ‘make decisions based on rigorous analysis at more than double the rate of lower performing organisations’ and …

Dynamic Stability Analysis For A Self-Mixing Interferometry System, Yuanlong Fan, Yanguang Yu, Jiangtao Xi, Qinghua Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A self-mixing interferometry (SMI) system is a laser diode (LD) with an external cavity formed by a moving external target. The behavior of an SMI system is governed by the injection current J to the LD and the parameters associated with the external cavity mainly including optical feedback factor C , the initial external cavity length ( L0 ) and the light phase (∅0) which is mapped to the movement of the target. In this paper, we investigate the dynamic behavior of an SMI system by using the Lang-Kobayashi model. The stability boundary of such system is presented in the …

Characterisation Of Flicker Emission And Propagation In Distribution Networks With Bi-Directional Power Flows, D Perera, L Meegahapola, S Perera, P Ciufo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

With the increasing penetration levels of intermittent and fluctuating energy sources such as wind generating systems in the electricity grid, resulting voltage fluctuations and flicker can be expected to become an important power quality considerations. Due to significant bidirectional power flows resulting from large renewable power generation systems connected to downstream, voltage fluctuations may propagate from downstream to upstream. The work presented in this paper investigates and characterises flicker emission and propagation resulting from fluctuating generating sources connected to a distribution network. Mathematical models are developed for flicker emission under different generator control strategies and flicker propagation to upstream network. …

Design And Evaluation Of A Linear Damper Working With Mr Shear Thickening Fluids, Tongfei Tian, Weihua Li, Masami Nakano

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Magnetorheological (MR) materials and shear thickening fluids are both smart material and their combination could offer both MR and ST effects. This study looks at the properties and behaviour of magnetorheological shear thickening fluid (MRSTF) in particular whilst applied as a semi-active energy absorber. A device with two forms of varying vibration control has been created and measured. The result shows that this MRSTF filled damper showed both MR and properties.

A Novel Mr Device With Variable Stiffness And Damping Capability, Shiyu Zhao, Huaxia Deng, Jin Zhang, Liandong Yu, Shuaishuai Sun, Weihua Li, Laijun Zhou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper proposes a novel device based on the Magnetorheological (MR) fluid which has the capability to change stiffness and damping under control. MR fluid is a type of smart material whose properties could be controlled by the external magnetic field. Most of MR devices are MR dampers, which normally are used as variable damping devices. The presented device consists of two hydro-cylinder-spring structures and one MR valve linking these two structures. The rheological characteristics of MR fluid in the fluid flow channels of MR valve are controlled by the strength of magnetic fields, which directly affect the link conditions. …

Angular Rebinning For Geometry Independent Spect Reconstruction, Alexandre Bousse, Kjell Erlandsson, Stefano Pedemonte, Sebastien Ourselin, Simon Arridge, Brian F. Hutton

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This work proposes a novel approach to model the collimator response in SPECT. The approach consists of projecting the activity volume on a high number of virtual projection planes that are then averaged with an angular point spread function. It was motivated by the new possibilities offered by GPU for 3-D projection/backprojection. This approach also allows to model a wide range of SPECT imaging systems. Results show that reconstruction using our resolution modelling method is consistent with standard blurring. As an example, we show how to implement a convergent collimator response.

Creating Value Through Virtual Teams: A Current Literature Review, Akemi Chatfield, V Najem Shlemoon, Wilbur Redublado, Gary Darbyshire

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Globally, virtual teams (VT) as ICT-enabled emergent network organisation forms have gained international validity by innovative organisations, with a corresponding surge of interest in understanding how organisations can leverage VT to create business value. Despite growing deliberations in VT literature on managing VT, tasks and outcomes, however, creating business value through VT remains an unresolved theoretical and pragmatic conundrum. A review of prior relevant literature is essential to advancing knowledge. The paucity of published review articles seems to have impeded the field's accumulation of VT knowledge. This research, therefore, reviews the current literature on case studies of VT to address …

Simplified Finite Element Modelling Of End Cover Separation In Rc Beams Flexurally-Strengthened With Bonded Frp Reinforcement, S S. Zhang, J G. Teng Jan 2013

Simplified Finite Element Modelling Of End Cover Separation In Rc Beams Flexurally-Strengthened With Bonded Frp Reinforcement, S S. Zhang, J G. Teng

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The flexural performance of RC beams can be improved using externally bonded (EB) or near-surface mounted (NSM) fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcement. One of the commonly observed failure modes of such FRP-strengthened RC beams is the end cover separation failure mode which involves the detachment of the bonded FRP reinforcement together with the cover concrete along the level of the longitudinal steel reinforcement. This paper presents a simplified finite element (FE) model for end cover separation failure in RC beams flexurally-strengthened with either EB or NSM FRP. In this simplified FE model, only the part of the RC beam between the …

Numerical Study On Interaction Between Steel Stirrups And Shear- Strengthening Nsm Frp Strips In Rc Beams, G M. Chen, S W. Li, S S. Zhang, J F. Chen, J G. Teng Jan 2013

Numerical Study On Interaction Between Steel Stirrups And Shear- Strengthening Nsm Frp Strips In Rc Beams, G M. Chen, S W. Li, S S. Zhang, J F. Chen, J G. Teng

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

RC beams shear-strengthened with externally bonded or near-surface mounted (NSM) FRP reinforcement usually fail by the debonding of FRP in a brittle manner. When the FRP reinforcement debonds, the internal steel stirrups may have not reached their yield strength, so the contribution of the latter to the shear resistance of the beam is compromised to some extent. This phenomenon is referred to as the adverse shear interaction between the steel stirrups and the bonded FRP shear reinforcement. This paper examines such shear interaction in RC beams shear strengthened with NSM FRP strips using a simple computational model. Numerical results obtained …

We have designed, fabricated, and characterized a 1 x 8 ultrasmall compact arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) in a fiber grating demodulation integration microsystem. The miniature AWG, consisting of Si photonic wire waveguides, was designed using the complete modeling simulation in the beam propagation method. The device was fabricated on an SOI substrate and evaluated in the wavelength range around 1.55 μm, with an effective area of 230 x 160 μm. Clear demultiplexing characteristics were observed with a channel spacing of 1.91 nm. The influence of the waveguide widths on crosstalk defined by adjacent channel crosstalk and phase error …

Redefining Zero? A Critical Review Of Definitions Of Zero Energy Buildings And Zero Carbon Homes, Emma Elizabeth Heffernan, Wei Pan, Xi Liang, Pieter De Wilde Jan 2013

Redefining Zero? A Critical Review Of Definitions Of Zero Energy Buildings And Zero Carbon Homes, Emma Elizabeth Heffernan, Wei Pan, Xi Liang, Pieter De Wilde

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

From 2016 all new homes in the UK will be required, by law, to be 'zero carbon'. However, the detail of the Zero Carbon Homes standard is still being developed. Internationally there has been much debate on a definition for zero energy; though a consensus has yet to emerge. This paper presents an overview and synthesis of the literature on such definitions. Through a critical review, a series of options for the determination of a 'zero energy' or 'zero carbon' balance are revealed; the extent to which each option fully accounts for the energy consumed is also considered. The results …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

PURPOSE: Many trans-tibial amputees could not tolerate long-distance walking. Lack of walking could explain for the increased cardiovascular diseases mortality rate. This study investigated the effects of long-distance walking (LDW) on socket-limb interface pressure, tactile sensitivity of the residual limb, and subjective feedbacks, which potentially identified the difficulties in LDW. METHOD: Five male unilateral trans-tibial amputees walked on a level treadmill for a total of one hour at comfortable speed. Tactile sensitivity of the residual limb and socket-limb interface pressure during over-ground walking were measured before and after the treadmill walking. Modified Prosthesis Evaluation Questionnaires were also administered. RESULTS: After …

Should Users Pay The Toll For Australia's Infrastructure Problem?, Garry Bowditch

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Australia spends more on infrastructure today than at any stage in its history. Yet governments are unable to meet demand and don't expect ever to do so. What can governments do to keep up with escalating demand and community expectations for infrastructure? Reserve Bank assistant governor Philip Lowe says tolls and levies could be the answer to more efficiently funding the transport infrastructure we need - infrastructure he says would boost productivity and improve living standards. Tolls are just one issue likely to be debated as part of the Productivity Commission's current inquiry into infrastructure costs, which is considering how …

Australia's Infrastructure Cost Conundrum, Garry Bowditch Jan 2013

Australia's Infrastructure Cost Conundrum, Garry Bowditch

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Infrastructure is about the long-term growth and prosperity of a nation, but Australia will get very little of this benefit if the cost of building it continues to rapidly escalate. Australia is becoming increasingly uncompetitive in design and delivery of major projects. This is an unacceptable situation, and a newly commissioned multi-state inquiry by the SMART Infrastructure Facility will identify the key causes and make recommendations to help secure better value for taxpayers' money. Australian jurisdictions have experienced sharp rises in the cost of delivering mega-projects. In the pre-GFC mining construction boom period of the mid-2000s construction costs were 20-30% …

A General Performance Model For Mac Layer Cooperative Retransmission Contention Protocols, Brett Hagelstein, Mehran Abolhasan, Daniel Franklin, Farzad Safaei Jan 2013

A General Performance Model For Mac Layer Cooperative Retransmission Contention Protocols, Brett Hagelstein, Mehran Abolhasan, Daniel Franklin, Farzad Safaei

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Cooperative retransmission schemes can significantly improve transmission reliability and performance over high loss and time-varying links. However, analytically comparing performance between retransmission strategies is challenging and generally requires simplistic assumptions. This paper presents a general model for the performance of distributed, slot-based contention algorithms for opportunistic decode and forward retransmission algorithms. The model is independent of specific modulation or coding schemes and may be adapted to suit state-based transmission probability models. The model is validated through QualNet simulations.

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We report the first demonstration of a photonic chip based dynamically reconfigurable, widely tunable, narrow pass-band, high Q microwave photonic filter (MPF). We exploit stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a 6.5 cm long chalcogenide (As2S3) photonic chip to demonstrate a MPF that exhibited a high quality factor of ~520 and narrow bandwidth and was dynamically reconfigurable and widely tunable. It maintained a stable 3 dB bandwidth of 23 ± 2MHz and amplitude of 20 ± 2 dB over a large frequency tuning range of 2-12 GHz. By tailoring the pump spectrum, we reconfigured the 3 dB bandwidth of the MPF …

Agency In Transport Service: Implications Of Traveller Mode Choice Objective And Latent Attributes Using Random Parameter Logit Model, Ahm Mehbub Anwar, A Kiet Tieu, Peter Gibson, Khin Than Win, Matthew J. Berryman

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper explains how principal-agent theory (PAT) can be used as an analytical tool to understand the traveller-Transport for NSW relationship and minimise the agency uncertainty in the relationship by examining traveller preferences for mode choices. The paper emphasises latent variables and objective attributes together during the choice process within the agency relationship, as a method by which the utility of the principal (traveller) can be maximised and evaluated using a discrete choice experiment, i.e. random parameter logit (RPL) model. The probability of car useis significantly higher than public transport, which indicates that an agency uncertainty exists in the relationship …

Providing Metrics And Automatic Enhancement For Hierarchical Taxonomies, Ghassan Beydoun, Francisco Garcia-Sanchez, Cristin M. Vincent-Torres, Antonio A. Lopez-Lorca, Rodrigo Martinez-Bejar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Taxonomies enable organising information in a human-machine understandable form, but constructing them for reuse and maintainability remains difficult. The paper presents a formal underpinning to provide quality metrics for a taxonomy under development. It proposes a methodology for semi-automatic building of maintainable taxonomies and outlines key features of the knowledge engineering context where the metrics and methodology are most suitable. The strength of the approach presented is that it is applied during the actual construction of the taxonomy. Users provide terms to describe different domain elements, as well as their attributes, and methodology uses metrics to assess the quality of …

Identity-Based Data Storage In Cloud Computing, Jinguang Han, Willy Susilo, Yi Mu Jan 2013

Identity-Based Data Storage In Cloud Computing, Jinguang Han, Willy Susilo, Yi Mu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Identity-based proxy re-encryption schemes have been proposed to shift the burden of managing numerous files from the owner to a proxy server. Nevertheless, the existing solutions suffer from several drawbacks. First, the access permission is determined by the central authority, which makes the scheme impractical. Second, they are insecure against collusion attacks. Finally, only queries from the same domain (intra-domain) are considered. We note that one of the main applications of identity-based proxy re-encryption schemes is in the cloud computing scenario. Nevertheless, in this scenario, users in different domains can share files with each other. Therefore, the existing solutions do …

Thermal Defect Analysis On Distribution Transformer Using A Rlc Network And Thermography, Geoffrey O. Asiegbu, Ahmed M. A Haidar, Kamarul Hawari Jan 2013

Thermal Defect Analysis On Distribution Transformer Using A Rlc Network And Thermography, Geoffrey O. Asiegbu, Ahmed M. A Haidar, Kamarul Hawari

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Electrical transformers are vital components found virtually in most power-operated equipments. These transformers spontaneously radiate heat in both operation and steady-state mode. Should this thermal radiation inherent in transformers rises above allowable threshold a reduction in efficiency of operation occurs. In addition, this could cause other components in the system to malfunction. The aim of this work is to detect the remote causes of this undesirable thermal rise in transformers such as oil distribution transformers and ways to control this prevailing thermal problem. Oil transformers consist of these components: windings usually made of copper or aluminum conductor, the core normally …

Rectifier Capacitor Filter Stress Analysis When Subject To Regular Voltage Fluctuations, Kun Zhao, Phil Ciufo, Sarath Perera Jan 2013

Rectifier Capacitor Filter Stress Analysis When Subject To Regular Voltage Fluctuations, Kun Zhao, Phil Ciufo, Sarath Perera

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Lamp flicker levels which arise as a result of voltage fluctuations can exceed limits set by appropriate standards. New lamp types such as compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are less sensitive to voltage fluctuations as their flicker characteristics are considerably different compared to those of the traditional incandescent lamp. These differences could support the moderation of the present voltage fluctuation and flicker standards and hence the associated limits. The potential detrimental effects on electrical equipment which may be caused by relaxation of these limits should be investigated before any changes to the present standards take place. The impact of voltage fluctuations …

Automated Authorship Attribution Using Advanced Signal Classification Techniques, Maryam Ebrahimpour, Talis J. Putnins, Matthew J. Berryman, Andrew Allison, Brian W-H Ng, Derek Abbott

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we develop two automated authorship attribution schemes, one based on Multiple Discriminant Analysis (MDA) and the other based on a Support Vector Machine (SVM). The classification features we exploit are based on word frequencies in the text. We adopt an approach of preprocessing each text by stripping it of all characters except a-z and space. This is in order to increase the portability of the software to different types of texts. We test the methodology on a corpus of undisputed English texts, and use leave-one-out cross validation to demonstrate classification accuracies in excess of 90%. We further …

Experimental Analysis Of The Magnetic Flux Characteristics Of Saturated Core Fault Current Limiters, Jeffrey W. Moscrop Jan 2013

Experimental Analysis Of The Magnetic Flux Characteristics Of Saturated Core Fault Current Limiters, Jeffrey W. Moscrop

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A fault current limiter (FCL) is a device that is designed to reduce the impact of fault currents on electricity networks and increase the availability of such networks to consumers. One particular FCL technology that is currently attracting worldwide attention, from both researchers and commercial engineering companies, is the saturated core FCL. This device utilizes the change in permeability between the saturated and unsaturated states of a magnetic core to provide both low steady state losses and effective fault current limiting. Typically the core is saturated using an electromagnetic coil, which can be either superconducting or non-superconducting. Although there have …
