Investigation On Slab Continuous Straightening Technology And Deformation Analysis, Xingzhong Zhang, Hongtao Zhu, Wen Huang, Baojun Shi, Anh Kiet Tieu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A new method of setting continuous bending and straightening strain rate according to temperature subzone was brought forward. By making use of the high temperature creep character effectively during the continuous casting slab being straightened, a new model curve of continuous caster was developed. And by using theoretical and finite element method the strain and strain rate of the slab under multi-point straightening and the new continuous straightening were analysed. The result shows that for continuous straightening the strain rate of the slab is constant and lower than that of the slab under multi-point straightening, and the strain varies linearly. …

Point Of Common Coupling (Pcc) Voltage Control Of A Grid-Connected Solar Photovoltaic (Pv) System, Brian K. Perera, Philip Ciufo, Sarath Perera

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In future low voltage grids, with multiple inverter interfaced sources connected, voltage regulation may become a necessary task. The potential exists for inverter interfaced sources to be deployed to regulate the voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC) of each inverter interfaced sources. The PCC voltage regulation is attainable with inverter interfaced sources by dynamically controlling the amount of reactive power injected to the power distribution grid by individual systems. In the current research, a closed-loop controller is proposed to regulate the PCC voltage of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system that is connected to a single-phase power distribution feeder …

Verifiable And Anonymous Encryption In Asymmetric Bilinear Maps, Hui Cui, Yi Mu, Man Ho Au Jan 2013

Verifiable And Anonymous Encryption In Asymmetric Bilinear Maps, Hui Cui, Yi Mu, Man Ho Au

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Consider a practical scenario: an untrusted gate-way is required to verify all the incoming information en-crypted via an encryption scheme, while the sender does not want to reveal any information about the plaintext and the privileged user to the gateway. That is, the gateway distributes the information to a predefined group of users and only the privileged user can open the message. To solve this problem, we need an access control mechanism to allow certain specification of the access control policies while protecting the users' privacy. With this scenario in mind, we propose the notion of verifiable and anonymous encryption …

Threshold-Oriented Optimistic Fair Exchange, Yang Wang, Man Ho Allen Au, Joseph K. Liu, Tsz Hon Yuen, Willy Susilo Jan 2013

Threshold-Oriented Optimistic Fair Exchange, Yang Wang, Man Ho Allen Au, Joseph K. Liu, Tsz Hon Yuen, Willy Susilo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Fair exchange protocol aims to allow two parties to exchange digital items in a fair manner. It is well-known that fairness can only be achieved with the help of a trusted third party, usually referred to as arbitrator. A fair exchange protocol is optimistic if the arbitrator is not involved in the normal execution of the fair exchange process. That is, its presence is necessary only when one of the exchanging parties is dishonest. Traditionally, the items being exchanged are digital signatures. In this paper, we consider the items to be threshold signatures. Specifically, the signatures are created by a …

On The Curve Diffusion Flow Of Closed Plane Curves, Glen Wheeler Jan 2013

On The Curve Diffusion Flow Of Closed Plane Curves, Glen Wheeler

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we consider the steepest descent H−1-gradient flow of the length functional for immersed plane curves, known as the curve diffusion flow. It is known that under this flow there exist both initially immersed curves that develop at least one singularity in finite time and initially embedded curves that self-intersect in finite time. We prove that under the flow closed curves with initial data close to a round circle in the sense of normalised L2 oscillation of curvature exist for all time and converge exponentially fast to a round circle. This implies that for a sufficiently large ‘waiting …

A Methodology For Cost Optimization Of The Layout Design Of Multi-Span Reinforced Concrete Beams, Pezhman Sharafi, Muhammad Hadi, Lip H. Teh

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper presents a description of a new methodology for the optimum preliminary layout design of reinforced concrete multi-span beams considering the relevant cost elements. First, a new objective function is presented, as an alternative to traditional cost functions for reinforced concrete beams. The ability of being easily employed in layout optimization problems, gives the new cost function a distinct advantage over its alternatives. Examples are included to illustrate the performance of the new methodology.

On A Counterexample To A Conjecture By Blackadar, Adam P. Sorensen Jan 2013

On A Counterexample To A Conjecture By Blackadar, Adam P. Sorensen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Blackadar conjectured that if we have a split short-exact sequence 0-I-A-C-0 were I is semiprojective then A must be semiprojective. Eilers and Katsura have found a counterexample to this conjecture. Presumably Blackadar asked that the extension be split to make it more likely that semiprojectivity of I would imply semiprojectivity of A. But oddly enough, in all the counterexamples of Eilers and Katsura the quotient map from A to A/I=~C is split. We will show how to modify their examples to find a non-semiprojective C* -algebra B with a semiprojective idal J such that B/J is the complex numbers and …

Application Of Mbse To Requirements Engineering - Research Challenges, Mike Ryan, Stephen Cook, William R. Scott

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Models and simulations have always played an important role in engineering and systems engineering. Physical scale models, full-sized models, and computer models are commonly used in all forms of engineering and design. In recent times, interest in modelling has increased to span the full system lifecycle and there has been a significant focus on Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE). The extension of formal modelling into all phases, and particularly the conceptual design phase, of a system development is a significant step and proponents of MBSE suggest that it will provide considerable benefits. The application of modelling requires considerable care, however. A …

A Model Of The Effects Of Authority On Consensus Formation In Adaptive Networks: Impact On Network Topology And Robustness, Brenton J. Prettejohn, Matthew J. Berryman, Mark D. Mcdonnell

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Opinions of individuals in real social networks are arguably strongly influenced by external determinants, such as the opinions of those perceived to have the highest levels of authority. In order to model this, we have extended an existing model of consensus formation in an adaptive network by the introduction of a parameter representing each agent's level of 'authority' based on their opinion relative to the overall opinion distribution. We found that introducing this model, along with a randomly varying opinion convergence factor, significantly impacts the final state of converged opinions and the number of interactions required to reach that state. …

Analytical Nonlinear Reluctance Model Of A Single-Phase Saturated Core Fault Current Limiter, Philip A. Commins, Jeffrey W. Moscrop Jan 2013

Analytical Nonlinear Reluctance Model Of A Single-Phase Saturated Core Fault Current Limiter, Philip A. Commins, Jeffrey W. Moscrop

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A saturated core fault current limiter (FCL) is a device that is designed to limit the fault currents in electrical energy networks and consequently, protect existing network equipment from damage. Due to complex nonlinear magnetic properties, the performance of saturated core FCLs has largely been characterized through experimentation and finite-element analysis simulations. Although both of these techniques are quite accurate, they are time consuming and do not describe the behavior of FCLs in actual electrical networks. This has led to an increasing demand for an accurate analytical model that is suitable for transient network analyses. This paper presents the development …

Secure Id-Based Linkable And Revocable-Iff-Linked Ring Signature With Constant-Size Construction, Man Ho Au, Joseph K. Liu, Willy Susilo, Tsz Hon Yuen Jan 2013

Secure Id-Based Linkable And Revocable-Iff-Linked Ring Signature With Constant-Size Construction, Man Ho Au, Joseph K. Liu, Willy Susilo, Tsz Hon Yuen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we propose a new ID-based event-oriented linkable ring signature scheme, with an option as revocable-iff-linked. With this option, if a user generates two linkable ring signatures in the same event, everyone can compute his identity from these two signatures. We are the first in the literature to propose such a secure construction in an ID-based setting. Even compared with other existing non ID-based schemes, we enjoy significant efficiency improvement, including constant signature size and linking complexity. Our scheme can be also regarded as a normal ID-based ring signature. We are also the first to propose such a …

Optical Vortex Solitary Wave In Bounded Nematic-Liquid-Crystal Cell, Antonmaria A. Minzoni, Luke W. Sciberras, Noel F. Smyth, Annette L. Worthy

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Modulation theory, based on a Lagrangian formulation of the governing equations, is used to investigate the propagation of a nonlinear, nonlocal optical vortex solitary wave in a finite nematic-liquid-crystal cell. The nematic response to the vortex is calculated using the approach of themethod of images (MOI). It is demonstrated that the MOI is a reliable alternative to the usual Fourier series solution as it requires an order of magnitude fewer terms to obtain excellent agreement with numerical solutions. It is found that the cell walls, in addition to repelling the optical vortex solitary wave, as for an optical solitary wave, …

Multi-Objective Reactive Power Support From Wind Farms For Network Performance Enhancement, Lasantha Meegahapola, Brendan Fox, Tim Littler, Damian Flynn Jan 2013

Multi-Objective Reactive Power Support From Wind Farms For Network Performance Enhancement, Lasantha Meegahapola, Brendan Fox, Tim Littler, Damian Flynn

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper examines the ability of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) to deliver multiple reactive power objectives during variable wind conditions. The reactive power requirement is decomposed based on various control objectives (e.g. power factor control, voltage control, loss minimisation, and flicker mitigation) defined around different time frames (i.e. seconds, minutes, and hourly), and the control reference is generated by aggregating the individual reactive power requirement for each control strategy. A novel coordinated controller is implemented for the rotor-side converter and the grid-side converter considering their capability curves and illustrating that it can effectively utilise the aggregated DFIG reactive …

Graphene Micro-Substrate Induced High Electron-Phonon Coupling In Mgb2, W X. Li, X Xu, K S. B De Silva, F X. Xiang, S X. Dou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Electron-phonon coupling strength was studied in graphene-MgB2 composites to explore the possibilities for a higher superconducting transition temperature (Tc). For the first time in the experimental work on MgB2, the Raman active E2g mode was split into two parts: a softened mode corresponding to tensile strain and a hardened mode attributed to the carbon substitution effect. The tensile strain effect is suggested to improve Tc of graphene-MgB2 composites because it increases the electron-phonon coupling strength of MgB2.

Study Of Pdms Based Magnetorheological Elastomers, Tongfei Tian, Xing Zhong Zhang, Weihua Li, Gursel Alici, J Ding

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The fabrication of conventional magnetorheological elastomers (MRE) is usually taken more than 1 day because the conventional matrixes such as natural rubber and silicone rubber need long curing time to become solid state. This study presents a rapid method for fabricating MRE within 90 minutes by using poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) as the matrix thanks to the rapid curing of PDMS in high temperature. A total of four PDMS based MRE samples were fabricated. Their mechanical and rheological properties under both steady-state and dynamic loading conditions were tested with a parallel-plate rheometer. Additionally, the microstructures of the PDMS based MREs were also …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study focuses on the magnetorheology and sensing capability of graphite based Magnetorheological Elastomers (Gr MREs). By introducing graphite (Gr) to conventional MREs, the Gr MREs are derived. The anisotropic sample with 20% graphite weight fraction was selected to be compared with anisotropic conventional MREs. The microstructures of anisotropic Gr MREs and conventional MREs were observed. Both steady state tests and dynamic tests were conducted to study rheological properties of the samples. For dynamic tests, the effects of strain amplitude, and frequency on both storage modulus and loss modulus were measured. For sensing capability, the resistance of selected Gr MREs …

On The K-Theory Of Twisted Higher-Rank-Graph C*-Algebras, Alex Kumjian, David Pask, Aidan Sims Jan 2013

On The K-Theory Of Twisted Higher-Rank-Graph C*-Algebras, Alex Kumjian, David Pask, Aidan Sims

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We investigate the K-theory of twisted higher-rank-graph algebras by adapting parts of Elliott's computation of the K-theory of the rotation algebras. We show that each 2-cocycle on a higher-rank graph taking values in an abelian group determines a continuous bundle of twisted higher-rank graph algebras over the dual group. We use this to show that for a circle-valued 2-cocycle on a higher-rank graph obtained by exponentiating a real-valued cocycle, the K-theory of the twisted higher-rank graph algebra coincides with that of the untwisted one.

Self-Assembly Of Hierarchical Star-Like Co3o4 Micro/Nanostructures And Their Application In Lithium Ion Batteries, Li Li, Kuok Hau Seng, Zhixin Chen, Zaiping Guo, Hua-Kun Liu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A novel hierarchical star-like Co3O4 was successfully synthesized from self-assembled hierarchical Co(OH)F precursors via a facile hydrothermal method and subsequent annealing in air. The morphological evolution process of the Co(OH)F precursors was investigated by examining the different reaction times during synthesis. First, hexagonal plates are formed, and then nanodiscs grow on the surface of the plates. Subsequently, dissolution and regrowth of Co(OH)F occur to form the star-like hierarchical structures. Co3O4 obtained from thermal decomposition of the Co(OH)F precursor in air at 350 °C exhibited high reversible capacity as an anode material in lithium ion batteries. The specific charge capacity of …
