Indefinite Kasparov Modules And Pseudo-Riemannian Manifolds, Koen Van Den Dungen, Adam C. Rennie Jan 2016

Indefinite Kasparov Modules And Pseudo-Riemannian Manifolds, Koen Van Den Dungen, Adam C. Rennie

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We present a definition of indefinite Kasparov modules, a generalisation of unbounded Kasparov modules modelling non-symmetric and non-elliptic (e.g. hyperbolic) operators. Our main theorem shows that to each indefinite Kasparov module we can associate a pair of (genuine) Kasparov modules, and that this process is reversible. We present three examples of our framework: the Dirac operator on a pseudo-Riemannian spin manifold (i.e. a manifold with an indefinite metric); the harmonic oscillator; and the construction via the Kasparov product of an indefinite spectral triple from a family of spectral triples. This last construction corresponds to a foliation of a globally hyperbolic …

Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of Strip Cast Trip Steel Subjected To Thermo-Mechanical Simulation, Zhiping Xiong, Andrii Kostryzhev, Liang Chen, Elena V. Pereloma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Instead of hot rolling and cold rolling followed by annealing, strip casting is a more economic and environmentally friendly way to produce transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) steels. According to industrial practice of strip casting, rapid cooling in this work was achieved using a dip tester, and a Gleeble 3500 thermo-mechanical simulator was used to carry out the processing route. A typical microstructure of TRIP steels, which included ~0.55 fraction of polygonal ferrite with bainite, retained austenite and martensite, was obtained. The effects of deformation (0.41 reduction) above non-recrystallisation temperature, isothermal bainite transformation temperature and the size of second phase region on …

Maintaining Pipeline Integrity Through Holistic Asset Management, Khaled O. El-Akruti, Tieling Zhang, Richard Dwight

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A review of the concept of engineering asset management (EAM) and its role in integrity management within the context of energy pipelines has been conducted. The EAM system is shown to be concerned with pipeline integrity assurance at any point of the asset life. The effectiveness of a holistic EAM approach to assuring pipeline integrity is explored through case studies for pipelines that transport high pressure natural gas or liquid petroleum. The research examines the EAM system activities, data available and information flow and decision mechanisms utilised in industry and their effectiveness in incorporating the management or control of coating …

Particle Size Segregation Of Bulk Material In Dustiness Testers Via Dem Simulation, Sathaphon Wangchai, David B. Hastie, Peter W. Wypych

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Dustiness testers are used to quantify the level of dust within a bulk material. The generation of dust can occur as a result of many bulk material handling activities, including filling or discharge from storage bins, during free-fall, material impact on conveyor transfers, or impact with other materials. Dust generation can have a serious impact to the environment as well as workers and nearby communities. This paper presents the findings of a discrete element modeling (DEM) study of the flow behavior of a range of binary granular mixes tested in the European Standard and the Australian Standard dustiness testers. Due …

Comparison Of Rheological Behaviors With Fumed Silica-Based Shear Thickening Fluids, Alain David Moriana, Tongfei Tian, Vitor Sencadas, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Shear thickening fluids (STFs) of differing compositions were fabricated and characterised in order to observe the effect of varying chemical and material properties on the resultant rheological behavior. Steady shear tests showed that for a given carrier fluid and particle size exists an optimum weight fraction which exhibits optimal shear thickening performance. Testing also showed that increasing particle size resulted in increased shear thickening performance and its onset whilst altering the carrier fluid chemistry has a significant effect on the thickening performance. An explanation is provided connecting the effect of varying particle size, carrier fluid chemistry and weight fraction to …

Fabricating Superior Nial Bronze Components Through Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing, Donghong Ding, Zengxi Stephen Pan, Stephen Van Duin, Hui Jun Li, Chen Shen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Cast nickel aluminum bronze (NAB) alloy is widely used for large engineering components in marine applications due to its excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Casting porosity, as well as coarse microstructure, however, are accompanied by a decrease in mechanical properties of cast NAB components. Although heat treatment, friction stir processing, and fusion welding were implemented to eliminate porosity, improve mechanical properties, and refine the microstructure of as-cast metal, their applications are limited to either surface modification or component repair. Instead of traditional casting techniques, this study focuses on developing NAB components using recently expanded wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). …

Performance Analysis Of A Magnetorheological Damper With Energy Harvesting Ability, Guoliang Hu, Yun Lu, Shuaishuai Sun, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A magnetorheological (MR) damper with energy harvesting ability was proposed based on electromagnetic induction (EMI) principle. The energy harvesting part was composed of a permanent magnet array and inducing coils which move vertically. This device could act as a linear power generator when the external excitation was applied, and the kinetic energy could be converted into electrical energy due to the relative linear motion between the magnets array and the inducing coils. Finite element models of both the MR damper part and the linear power generator part were built up separately to address the magnetic flux distributions, the magnetic flux …

Towards Data Analytics Of Pathogen-Host Protein-Protein Interaction: A Survey, Huaming Chen, Jun Shen, Lei Wang, Jiangning Song

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

"Big Data" is immersed in many disciplines, including computer vision, economics, online resources, bioinformatics and so on. Increasing researches are conducted on data mining and machine learning for uncovering and predicting related domain knowledge. Protein-protein interaction is one of the main areas in bioinformatics as it is the basis of the biological functions. However, most pathogen-host protein-protein interactions, which would be able to reveal much more infectious mechanisms between pathogen and host, are still up for further investigation. Considering a decent feature representation of pathogen-host protein-protein interactions (PHPPI), currently there is not a well structured database for research purposes, not …

Flexible Analysis Of Digital Pcr Experiments Using Generalized Linear Mixed Models, Matthijs Vynck, J Vandesompele, Nele Nijs, Björn Menten, Ariane De Ganck, Olivier Thas Jan 2016

Flexible Analysis Of Digital Pcr Experiments Using Generalized Linear Mixed Models, Matthijs Vynck, J Vandesompele, Nele Nijs, Björn Menten, Ariane De Ganck, Olivier Thas

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The use of digital PCR for quantification of nucleic acids is rapidly growing. A major drawback remains the lack of flexible data analysis tools. Published analysis approaches are either tailored to specific problem settings or fail to take into account sources of variability. We propose the generalized linear mixed models framework as a flexible tool for analyzing a wide range of experiments. We also introduce a method for estimating reference gene stability to improve accuracy and precision of copy number and relative expression estimates. We demonstrate the usefulness of the methodology on a complex experimental setup.

A Semantic Web Vision For An Intelligent Community Transport Service Brokering System, S K. Lau, Reza R. Zamani, Willy Susilo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Advances in semantic web research in recent years offer an opportunity for heterogeneous objects to exchange data and information in an interoperable way to make data and services machine-accessible and machine-processable. This paper describes a semantic web vision for an intelligent community transport service brokering system. The use of ontological approach to develop a semantic web brokering system opens up the data set for agent-based planning in reservation and scheduling. As ontologies are the building blocks of the semantic web and small simple ontologies are often constructed individually by different users, ontology integration approach is proposed to achieve data interoperability …

A New Algorithm For Protecting Aggregate Business Microdata Via A Remote System, Yue Ma, Yan-Xia Lin, James O. Chipperfield, John Newman, Victoria Leaver

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Releasing business microdata is a challenging problem for many statistical agencies. Businesses with distinct continuous characteristics such as extremely high income could easily be identified while these businesses are normally included in surveys representing the population. In order to provide data users with useful statistics while maintaining confidentiality, some statistical agencies have developed online based tools to allow users to specify and request tables created from microdata. These tools only release perturbed cell values generated from automatic output perturbation algorithms in order to protect each underlying observation against various attacks, such as differencing attacks. An example of the perturbation algorithms …

A Traffic Monitoring System For A Mixed Traffic Flow Via Road Estimation And Analysis, Nguyen Viet Hung, Le Chung Tran, Nguyen Hoang Dung, Thang Manh Hoang, Nguyen Tien Dzung

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A Traffic Monitoring System (TMS) is the most important element in the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), especially in a developing country like Vietnam with a mixed traffic flow of vehicles including motocycles and cars. A traffic flow varies in different daytime, therefore the adoption of the TMS for an adaptive control of the traffic light timing is very essential. The proposed TMS system uses one CCD camera mounted to view from the rear of moving vehicles appearing in a distance from a viewed span of the camera to the stopline of the cross-roads, which is denoted by L and statistically …

X-Tream Quality Assurance In Synchrotron X-Ray Microbeam Radiation Therapy, Pauline Fournier, Iwan Cornelius, Mattia Donzelli, Herwig Requardt, Christian Nemoz, Marco Petasecca, Elke Brauer-Krisch, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld, Michael L. F Lerch

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) is a novel irradiation technique for brain tumours treatment currently under development at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility in Grenoble, France. The technique is based on the spatial fractionation of a highly brilliant synchrotron X-ray beam into an array of microbeams using a multi-slit collimator (MSC). After promising pre-clinical results, veterinary trials have recently commenced requiring the need for dedicated quality assurance (QA) procedures. The quality of MRT treatment demands reproducible and precise spatial fractionation of the incoming synchrotron beam. The intensity profile of the microbeams must also be quickly and quantitatively characterized prior to each …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Human action recognition from RGB-D (Red, Green, Blue and Depth) data has attracted increasing attention since the first work reported in 2010. Over this period, many benchmark datasets have been created to facilitate the development and evaluation of new algorithms. This raises the question of which dataset to select and how to use it in providing a fair and objective comparative evaluation against stateof-the-art methods. To address this issue, this paper provides a comprehensive review of the most commonly used action recognition related RGB-D video datasets, including 27 single-view datasets, 10 multi-view datasets, and 7 multi-person datasets. The detailed information …

Ciphertext-Policy Attribute Based Encryption Supporting Access Policy Update, Yinhao Jiang, Willy Susilo, Yi Mu, Fuchun Guo Jan 2016

Ciphertext-Policy Attribute Based Encryption Supporting Access Policy Update, Yinhao Jiang, Willy Susilo, Yi Mu, Fuchun Guo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Attribute-based encryption (ABE) allows one-to-many encryption with static access control. In many occasions, the access control policy must be updated and the original encryptor might be required to re-encrypt the message, which is impractical, since the encryptor might be unavailable. Unfortunately, to date the work in ABE does not consider this issue yet, and hence this hinders the adoption of ABE in practice. In this work, we consider how to efficiently update access policies in Ciphertext-policy Attribute-based Encryption (CP-ABE) systems without re-encryption. We introduce a new notion of CP-ABE supporting access policy update that captures the functionalities of attribute addition …

Correcting Intensity Loss Errors In The Absence Of Texture-Free Reference Samples During Pole Figure Measurement, Ahmed A. Saleh, Quoc Viet Vu, Azdiar A. Gazder Jan 2016

Correcting Intensity Loss Errors In The Absence Of Texture-Free Reference Samples During Pole Figure Measurement, Ahmed A. Saleh, Quoc Viet Vu, Azdiar A. Gazder

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Even with the use of X-ray polycapillary lenses, sample tilting during pole figure measurement results in a decrease in the recorded X-ray intensity. The magnitude of this error is affected by the sample size and/or the finite detector size. These errors can be typically corrected by measuring the intensity loss as a function of the tilt angle using a texture-free reference sample (ideally made of the same alloy as the investigated material). Since texture-free reference samples are not readily available for all alloys, the present study employs an empirical procedure to estimate the correction curve for a particular experimental configuration. …

Authentication And Transaction Verification Using Qr Codes With A Mobile Device, Yang-Wai Chow, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang, Man Ho Au, Cong Wang Jan 2016

Authentication And Transaction Verification Using Qr Codes With A Mobile Device, Yang-Wai Chow, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang, Man Ho Au, Cong Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

User authentication and the verification of online transactions that are performed on an untrusted computer or device is an important and challenging problem. This paper presents an approach to authentication and transaction verification using a trusted mobile device, equipped with a camera, in conjunction with QR codes. The mobile device does not require an active connection (e.g., Internet or cellular network), as the required information is obtained by the mobile device through its camera, i.e. solely via the visual channel. The proposed approach consists of an initial user authentication phase, which is followed by a transaction verification phase. The transaction …

Impact Analyses For Negative Flexural Responses (Hogging) In Railway Prestressed Concrete Sleepers, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, T Ishida, Alex M. Remennikov Jan 2016

Impact Analyses For Negative Flexural Responses (Hogging) In Railway Prestressed Concrete Sleepers, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, T Ishida, Alex M. Remennikov

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

By nature, ballast interacts with railway concrete sleepers in order to provide bearing support to track system. Most train-track dynamic models do not consider the degradation of ballast over time. In fact, the ballast degradation causes differential settlement and impact forces acting on partial and unsupported tracks. Furthermore, localised ballast breakages underneath railseat increase the likelihood of centrebound cracks in concrete sleepers due to the unbalanced support under sleepers. This paper presents a dynamic finite element model of a standard-gauge concrete sleeper in a track system, taking into account the tensionless nature of ballast support. The finite element model was …

An Assessment Of Forward And Inverse Gia Solutions For Antarctica, Alba Martín-Español, Matt A. King, Andrew Zammit-Mangion, Stuart Andrews, Phillip Moore, Jonathan Bamber Jan 2016

An Assessment Of Forward And Inverse Gia Solutions For Antarctica, Alba Martín-Español, Matt A. King, Andrew Zammit-Mangion, Stuart Andrews, Phillip Moore, Jonathan Bamber

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this work we assess the most recent estimates of glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA) for Antarctica, including those from both forward and inverse methods. The assessment is based on a comparison of the estimated uplift rates with a set of elastic-corrected GPS vertical velocities. These have been observed from an extensive GPS network and computed using data over the period 2009-2014. We find systematic underestimations of the observed uplift rates in both inverse and forward methods over specific regions of Antarctica characterized by low mantle viscosities and thin lithosphere, such as the northern Antarctic Peninsula and the Amundsen Sea Embayment, …

Universal Measurability And The Hochschild Class Of The Chern Character, Alan L. Carey, Adam C. Rennie, F Sukochev, Dima Zanin Jan 2016

Universal Measurability And The Hochschild Class Of The Chern Character, Alan L. Carey, Adam C. Rennie, F Sukochev, Dima Zanin

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We study notions of measurability for singular traces, and characterise universal measurability for operators in Dixmier ideals. This measurability result is then applied to improve on the various proofs of Connes' identification of the Hochschild class of the Chern character of Dixmier summable spectral triples. The measurability results show that the identification of the Hochschild class is independent of the choice of singular trace. As a corollary we obtain strong information on the asymptotics of the eigenvalues of operators naturally associated to spectral triples (A, H, D) and Hochschild cycles for A.

Solitons For The Inverse Mean Curvature Flow, Gregory Drugan, Hojoo Lee, Glen Wheeler Jan 2016

Solitons For The Inverse Mean Curvature Flow, Gregory Drugan, Hojoo Lee, Glen Wheeler

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We investigate self-similar solutions to the inverse mean curvature flow in Euclidean space. Generalizing Andrews' theorem that circles are the only compact homothetic planar solitons, we apply the Hsiung-Minkowski integral formula to prove the rigidity of the hypersphere in the class of compact expanders of codimension one. We also establish that the moduli space of compact expanding surfaces of codimension two is large. Finally, we update the list of Huisken-Ilmanen's rotational expanders by constructing new examples of complete expanders with rotational symmetry, including topological hypercylinders, called infinite bottles, that interpolate between two concentric round hypercylinders.

Stability Control Of Force-Reflected Nonlinear Multilateral Teleoperation System Under Time-Varying Delays, Da Sun, Fazel Naghdy, Haiping Du

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A novel control algorithm based on the modified wave-variable controllers is proposed to achieve accurate position synchronization and reasonable force tracking of the nonlinear single-master-multiple-slave teleoperation system and simultaneously guarantee overall system's stability in the presence of large time-varying delays. The system stability in different scenarios of human and environment situations has been analyzed. The proposed method is validated through experimental work based on the 3-DOF trilateral teleoperation system consisting of three different manipulators. The experimental results clearly demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed algorithm to achieve high transparency and robust stability in nonlinear single-master-multiple-slave teleoperation system in the presence …

Non-Gaussian Bivariate Modelling With Application To Atmospheric Trace-Gas Inversion, Andrew Zammit-Mangion, Noel A. Cressie, Anita L. Ganesan Jan 2016

Non-Gaussian Bivariate Modelling With Application To Atmospheric Trace-Gas Inversion, Andrew Zammit-Mangion, Noel A. Cressie, Anita L. Ganesan

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Atmospheric trace-gas inversion is the procedure by which the sources and sinks of a trace gas are identified from observations of its mole fraction at isolated locations in space and time. This is inherently a spatio-temporal bivariate inversion problem, since the mole-fraction field evolves in space and time and the flux is also spatio-temporally distributed. Further, the bivariate model is likely to be non-Gaussian since the flux field is rarely Gaussian. Here, we use conditioning to construct a non-Gaussian bivariate model, and we describe some of its properties through auto- and cross-cumulant functions. A bivariate non-Gaussian, specifically trans-Gaussian, model is …

Fibre Bragg Grating Sensing Technology For The Evaluation Of Physical Properties Of Dental Resin Composites, Ginu Rajan, Paul Shouha, Ayman Ellakwa, Jiangtao Xi, Gangadhara B. Prusty

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The characterization of the physical properties of dental resin composites is fraught with difficulties relating to significant intra and inter test parameter variabilities and is relatively time consuming and expensive. The main aim of this study was to evaluate whether optical fibre Brag grating (FBG) sensing system may become a viable tool to study dental material characteristics. Of particular focus was the potential for the system to demonstrate a multi parameter all-in-one feature. A miniature FBG was embedded in six different dental resin composites and employed as a sensor to evaluate linear polymerization shrinkage, thermal expansion and water sorption. This …

Effect Of Mineral Matter On The Reactivity Of Coke And Its Replication In A Coke Analogue, Raymond Longbottom, Brian J. Monaghan, Azrin A. Chowdhury, Mark H. Reid, Guangqing Zhang, Merrick R. Mahoney, Kim Hockings Jan 2016

Effect Of Mineral Matter On The Reactivity Of Coke And Its Replication In A Coke Analogue, Raymond Longbottom, Brian J. Monaghan, Azrin A. Chowdhury, Mark H. Reid, Guangqing Zhang, Merrick R. Mahoney, Kim Hockings

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The reactivity of coke analogues doped with minerals to mimic the mineralogy of specific industrial cokes was compared with the reactivity of the industrial cokes. The reactivity was assessed in a pseudo-CRI type test. This involved reacting the carbonaceous materials (analogue and industrial coke) in CO2 at 1 100°C in a thermos-gravimetric system. In this comparison, the mineral matter added to the coke analogue was prepared from ashing of the industrial cokes. A distinct ranking of reactivity for the industrial cokes was determined to be coke A < coke B < coke C. The high reactivity of coke C was attributed to the high iron content in its ash. The higher reactivity of coke B over coke A was attributed to its higher porosity and lower rank (of the original coal carbon type) of the industrial cokes. The coke analogue replicated the increased reactivity of coke C over cokes A and B, indicating that the coke analogue is able to some extent to replicate the effect of coke mineralogy on coke reactivity in CO2. The use of the coke analogue allowed assessment of the difference in the reactivities of cokes A and B. When porosity and carbon type were fixed by use of the analogue, the reactivities of the analogues of cokes A and B were found to be similar.
