Dynamic Exergy Analysis For The Thermal Storage Optimization Of The Building Envelope, Valentina Bonetti, Georgios Kokogiannakis Jan 2017

Dynamic Exergy Analysis For The Thermal Storage Optimization Of The Building Envelope, Valentina Bonetti, Georgios Kokogiannakis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

As a measure of energy "quality", exergy is meaningful for comparing the potential for thermal storage. Systems containing the same amount of energy could have considerably different capabilities in matching a demand profile, and exergy measures this difference. Exergy stored in the envelope of buildings is central in sustainability because the environment could be an unlimited source of energy if its interaction with the envelope is optimised for maintaining the indoor conditions within comfort ranges. Since the occurring phenomena are highly fluctuating, a dynamic exergy analysis is required; however, dynamic exergy modelling is complex and has not hitherto been implemented …

Degradation Of Pharmaceuticals And Personal Care Products By White-Rot Fungi-A Critical Review, Muhammad Bilal Asif, Faisal I. Hai, Lakhveer Singh, William E. Price, Long D. Nghiem

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

White-rot fungi (WRF) mediated treatment can offer an environmentally friendly platform for the removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from wastewater. These PPCPs may have adverse impacts on aquatic organisms and even human and thus their removal during wastewater treatment is of significant interest to the water industry. Whole-cell WRF or their extracellular lignin modifying enzymes (LMEs) have been reported to efficiently degrade PPCPs that are persistent to conventional activated sludge process. WRF mediated treatment of PPCPs depends on a number of factors including physicochemical properties of PPCPs (e.g., hydrophobicity and chemical structure) and wastewater matrix (e.g., pH, …

A Torsional Mre Joint For A C-Shaped Robotic Leg, M D. Christie, Shuaishuai Sun, Donghong Ning, Haiping Du, Shiwu Zhang, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Serving to improve stability and energy efficiency during locomotion, in nature, animals modulate their leg stiffness to adapt to their terrain. Now incorporated into many locomotive robot designs, such compliance control can enable disturbance rejection and improved transition between changing ground conditions. This paper presents a novel design of a variable stiffness leg utilizing a magnetorheological elastomer joint in a literal rolling spring loaded inverted pendulum (R-SLIP) morphology. Through the semi-active control of this hybrid permanent-magnet and coil design, variable stiffness is realized, offering a design which is capable of both softening and stiffening in an adaptive sort of way, …

Pricing Credit Default Swaps Under A Multi-Scale Stochastic Volatility Model, Wenting Chen, Xin-Jiang He Jan 2017

Pricing Credit Default Swaps Under A Multi-Scale Stochastic Volatility Model, Wenting Chen, Xin-Jiang He

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we consider the pricing of credit default swaps (CDSs) with the reference asset driven by a geometric Brownian motion with a multi-scale stochastic volatility (SV), which is a two-factor volatility process with one factor controlling the fast time scale and the other representing the slow time scale. A key feature of the current methodology is to establish an equivalence relationship between the CDS and the down-and-out binary option through the discussion of "no default" probability, while balancing the two SV processes with the perturbation method. An approximate but closed-form pricing formula for the CDS contract is finally …

The K-Theoretic Bulk-Edge Correspondence For Topological Insulators, Chris Bourne, Johannes Kellendonk, Adam C. Rennie Jan 2017

The K-Theoretic Bulk-Edge Correspondence For Topological Insulators, Chris Bourne, Johannes Kellendonk, Adam C. Rennie

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We study the application of Kasparov theory to topological insulator systems and the bulk-edge correspondence. We consider observable algebras as modelled by crossed products, where bulk and edge systems may be linked by a short exact sequence. We construct unbounded Kasparov modules encoding the dynamics of the crossed product. We then link bulk and edge Kasparov modules using the Kasparov product. Because of the anti-linear symmetries that occur in topological insulator models, real C*-algebras and KKO-theory must be used.

Optical Dispersive Shock Waves In Defocusing Colloidal Media, Xin An, Timothy R. Marchant, Noel F. Smyth Jan 2017

Optical Dispersive Shock Waves In Defocusing Colloidal Media, Xin An, Timothy R. Marchant, Noel F. Smyth

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The propagation of an optical dispersive shock wave, generated from a jump discontinuity in light intensity, in a defocusing colloidal medium is analysed. The equations governing nonlinear light propagation in a colloidal medium consist of a nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the beam and an algebraic equation for the medium response. In the limit of low light intensity, these equations reduce to a perturbed higher order nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Solutions for the leading and trailing edges of the colloidal dispersive shock wave are found using modulation theory. This is done for both the perturbed nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the full colloid …

Predicting Concentrations Of Fine Particles In Enclosed Vessels Using A Camera Based System And Cfd Simulations, L Lulbadda Waduge, S Zigan, Luke Stone, A Belaidi, P Garcia-Trinanes Jan 2017

Predicting Concentrations Of Fine Particles In Enclosed Vessels Using A Camera Based System And Cfd Simulations, L Lulbadda Waduge, S Zigan, Luke Stone, A Belaidi, P Garcia-Trinanes

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

One of the main challenges in industries handling biomass is the consequence of the particle breakage of pelletised biomass in smaller fractions which can lead to fine particles smaller 500 ¿m that can form dust clouds in the handling and storing equipment. These dust clouds present potential health and safety hazards as well as dust explosion hazards to plant operators because the airborne dust can occur in high concentrations close to the dust explosion limits of the biomass material, during the filling process of storage silos. Preventing dust explosions and the damage of plant infrastructures requires a profound understanding of …

Optimum Resistive Type Fault Current Limiter: An Efficient Solution To Achieve Maximum Fault Ride-Through Capability Of Fixed-Speed Wind Turbines During Symmetrical And Asymmetrical Grid Faults, Seyed Behzad Naderi, Michael Negnevitsky, Amin Jalilian, Mehrdad Tarafdar Hagh, Kashem M. Muttaqi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This paper proposes an optimum resistive type fault current limiter (OR-FCL) as an efficient solution to achieve maximum fault ride-through (FRT) capability of fixed-speed wind turbines (FSWT) during various grid faults. In this paper, a dedicated control circuit is designed for the OR-FCL that enables it to insert an optimum value of resistance in the FSWT's fault current's path for improving transient behavior of the FSWT. The optimum resistance value depends on fault location and prefault active power. The control circuit of the proposed OR-FCL is capable of calculating the optimum resistance value for all the prefault conditions. By using …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The Least Mean Squares Blind Adaptive Multi-user Detection algorithm, the Recursive Least Squares Blind Adaptive Multi-user Detection algorithm, and the Kalman Filter Blind Adaptive Multi-user Detection algorithm, for under-ice communication networks with rising and diving interfering users, are investigated in this paper. Under-ice random asynchronous multi-user communication experiments with rising and diving interfering users were carried out (7 users, 15.7 bit/s per user, 1.2 km under-ice acoustic channels in the Bohai Sea). Good experimental results verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in mitigating inter-symbol interference and multiple access interference.

Stacking Fault Tetrahedron Induced Plasticity In Copper Single Crystal, Liang Zhang, Cheng Lu, Anh Kiet Tieu, Lihong Su, Xing Zhao, Linqing Pei Jan 2017

Stacking Fault Tetrahedron Induced Plasticity In Copper Single Crystal, Liang Zhang, Cheng Lu, Anh Kiet Tieu, Lihong Su, Xing Zhao, Linqing Pei

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Stacking fault tetrahedron (SFT) is the most common type of vacancy clustered defects in fcc metals and alloys, and can play an important role in the mechanical properties of metallic materials. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were carried out to investigate the incipience of plasticity and the underlying atomic mechanisms in copper single crystals with SFT. Different deformation mechanisms of SFT were reported due to the crystal orientations and loading directions (compression and tension). The results showed that the incipient plasticity in crystals with SFT resulted from the heterogeneous dislocation nucleation from SFT, so the stress required for …

A Framework To Assess Newmark-Type Simplified Methods For Evaluation Of Earthquake-Induced Deformation Of Embankments, Mojtaba E. Kan, Hossein Taiebat, Mahdi Taiebat

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The simplified procedures for evaluation of the earthquake induced displacement in earth and rockfill dams are widely used in practice. These methods are simple, inexpensive, and substantially less time consuming as compared to the complicated stress-deformation approaches. They are especially recommended to be used as a screening tool, to identify embankments with marginal factor of safety, assuming that these methods always give conservative estimates of settlements. However recent studies show that application of these methods may not be conservative in some cases, especially when the tuning ratio of a dam is within a certain range. In this paper the fundamental …

The high spatial and temporal resolution 2D monolithic silicon detector arrays M512 and DUO for quality assurance (QA) in real time motion adaptive radiotherapy (ART) have been developed. The DUO array possesses a spatial resolution of 0.2 mm and has demonstrated agreement within 5% with EBT3 film measurements of 6MV linac beam profiles for field sizes 1 × 1 cm2 and SRS cone diameter 0.5 cm. Dynamic characterisation of the M512 for QA in real time ART evaluated the performance of M512 for small fields while the detector experiences periodic motion. It was demonstrated with M512 that MLC tracking …

Quantum Beam Science-Applications To Probe Or Influence Matter And Materials, Klaus-Dieter Liss Jan 2017

Quantum Beam Science-Applications To Probe Or Influence Matter And Materials, Klaus-Dieter Liss

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The concept of quantum beams unifies a multitude of different kinds of radiation that can be considered as both waves and particles, according to the quantum mechanical model. Examples include light, in the form of X-rays and synchrotron radiation, as well as neutrons, electrons, positrons, muons, protons, ions, and photons. While the past century saw the discovery of these types of radiation and particles along with the investigations of their physical properties and their fundamental interaction with matter, the current century focuses extensively on their applications to characterize and understand materials in their broadest context, under all imaginable conditions. X-rays …

Effective Long Term Travel Time Prediction With Fuzzy Rules For Tollway, Ruimin Li, Geoffrey Rose, Huaming Chen, Jun Shen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Advanced traveller information system is an important intelligent transportation systems application area, which provides information to transport users and managers in order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the transportation system, in the face of increasing congestion in urban cities around the world. So far very limited research attention has been focused on long-term travel time prediction (i.e. predicting greater than 60 min ahead). Long-term travel time forecasts can play a critical role in journey planning decisions for both private road users and logistics operators. In this paper, we have considered a fuzzy neural network incorporated with both imprecise …

Parallel Gpu-Based Collision Detection Of Irregular Vessel Wall For Massive Particles, Binbin Yong, Jun Shen, Hongyu Sun, Huaming Chen, Qingguo Zhou

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we present a novel GPU-based limit space decomposition collision detection algorithm (LSDCD) for performing collision detection between a massive number of particles and irregular objects, which is used in the design of the ADS (Accelerator Driven Sub-Critical) system. Test results indicate that, the collisions between ten million particles and the vessel can be detected on a general personal computer in only 0.5 second per frame. With this algorithm, the collision detection of maximum sixty million particles are calculated in 3.488030 seconds. Experiment results show that our algorithm is promising for fast collision detection.

An Efficient And Provably Secure Rfid Grouping Proof Protocol, Shu Cheng, Vijay Varadharajan, Yi Mu, Willy Susilo Jan 2017

An Efficient And Provably Secure Rfid Grouping Proof Protocol, Shu Cheng, Vijay Varadharajan, Yi Mu, Willy Susilo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

RFID Grouping proof convinces an offline verifier that multiple tags are simultaneously scanned. Various solutions have been proposed but most of them have security and privacy vulnerabilities. In this paper, we propose an elliptic-curve-based RFID grouping proof protocol. Our protocol is proven secure and narrow-strong private. We also demonstrate that our grouping proof can be batch verified to improve the efficiency for large-scale RFID systems and it is suitable for low-cost RFID tags.

Rfid Ownership Transfer With Positive Secrecy Capacity Channels, Jorge Munilla Fajardo, Mike Burmester, Alberto Peinado, Guomin Yang, Willy Susilo Jan 2017

Rfid Ownership Transfer With Positive Secrecy Capacity Channels, Jorge Munilla Fajardo, Mike Burmester, Alberto Peinado, Guomin Yang, Willy Susilo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

RFID ownership transfer protocols (OTPs) transfer tag ownership rights. Recently, there has been considerable interest in such protocols, however, guaranteeing privacy for symmetric-key settings without trusted third parties (TTPs) is a challenge still unresolved. In this paper, we address this issue and show that it can be solved by using channels with positive secrecy capacity. We implement these channels with noisy tags and provide practical values, thus proving that perfect secrecy is theoretically possible. We then define a communication model that captures spatiotemporal events and describe a first example of symmetric-key based OTP that: (i) is formally secure in the …

Maximising Resource Allocation In The Teaching Laboratory: Understanding Student Evaluations Of Teaching Assistants In A Team-Based Teaching Format, Sasha Nikolic, Thomas F. Suesse, Timothy J. Mccarthy, Thomas Goldfinch

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Minimal research papers have investigated the use of student evaluations on the laboratory, a learning medium usually run by teaching assistants with little control of the content, delivery and equipment. Finding the right mix of teaching assistants for the laboratory can be an onerous task due to the many skills required including theoretical and practical know-how, troubleshooting, safety and class management. Using larger classes with multiple teaching assistants, a team-based teaching (TBT) format may be advantageous. A rigorous three-year study across twenty-five courses over repetitive laboratory classes is analysed using a multi-level statistical model considering students, laboratory classes and courses. …

Small Area Prediction Of Counts Under A Non-Stationary Spatial Model, Hukum Chandra, Nicola Salvati, Raymond L. Chambers Jan 2017

Small Area Prediction Of Counts Under A Non-Stationary Spatial Model, Hukum Chandra, Nicola Salvati, Raymond L. Chambers

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

There is a growing need for current and reliable counts at small area level. The empirical predictor under a generalised linear mixed model (GLMM) is often used for small area estimation (SAE) of such counts. However, the fixed effect parameters of a GLMM are spatially invariant and do not account for the presence of spatial nonstationarity in the population of interest. A geographically weighted regression extension of the GLMM is developed, extending this model to allow for spatial nonstationarity, and SAE based on this spatially nonstationary model (NSGLMM) is described. The empirical predictor for small area counts (NSEP) under an …

More Mixed Volume Preserving Curvature Flows, James A. Mccoy Jan 2017

More Mixed Volume Preserving Curvature Flows, James A. Mccoy

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We extend the results of McCoy (Calc Var Partial Differ Equ 24:131-154, 2005) to include several new cases where convex surfaces evolve to spheres under mixed volume preserving curvature flows, using recent results for unconstrained curvature flows and new regularity arguments in the constrained flow setting. We include results for speeds that are degree 1 homogeneous in the principal curvatures and indicate how, with sufficient curvature pinching conditions on the initial hypersurfaces, some results may be extended to speed homogeneous of degree α>1. In particular, these extensions require lower speed bounds that are obtained here without using estimates for …

An Unconstrained Statistical Matching Algorithm For Combining Individual And Household Level Geo-Specific Census And Survey Data, Mohammad-Reza Namazi-Rad, Rob Tanton, David G. Steel, Payam Mokhtarian, Sumonkanti Das Jan 2017

An Unconstrained Statistical Matching Algorithm For Combining Individual And Household Level Geo-Specific Census And Survey Data, Mohammad-Reza Namazi-Rad, Rob Tanton, David G. Steel, Payam Mokhtarian, Sumonkanti Das

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The Population Census is an important source of statistical information in most countries that is capable of producing reliable estimates of population characteristics for small geographic areas. One limitation of a census is that there are many population characteristics that cannot be collected due to respondent burden or cost. This means that statistical agencies have to conduct population based surveys to provide social, economic and demographic characteristics for a target population which are not captured by a large-scale census. These surveys are usually capable of producing direct estimates at the national level and high level regions but often cannot produce …

A Study Of The Tribological Behaviour Of Tio2 Nano-Additive Water-Based Lubricants, Hui Wu, Jingwei Zhao, Wenzhen Xia, Xiawei Cheng, Anshun He, Jung-Ho Yun, Lianzhou Wang, Han Huang, Sihai Jiao, Li Huang, Suoquan Zhang, Zhengyi Jiang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A ball-on-disk tribometer was employed to evaluate the lubrication performance and mechanisms of innovative TiO2 nano-additive water-based lubricants. Two experimental methods were applied to determine the optimal mass fraction of TiO2. In the method I, lubricants were added onto the worn disk tracks at a predetermined time interval. In the method II, the disks were immersed in the lubricants continuously during the whole process of tribological tests. The results both indicate that the water-based lubricants can significantly reduce the coefficient of friction (COF). The 0.8 wt% TiO2 lubricant demonstrates excellent tribological properties including the lowest COF …

Formative Assessment To Develop Oral Communication Competency Using Youtube: Self- And Peer Assessment In Engineering, Sasha Nikolic, David Stirling, Montserrat Ros

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Obtaining oral communication competency is an important skill for engineering students to prepare them for interacting and working in any professional setting. For engineers, it is also important to be able to present technical information to non-technical audiences. To ensure oral competency, a non-graded formative assessment approach using video with self- and peer assessment was introduced into a final-year engineering thesis course. A low workload approach was used due to growing student numbers and higher pressures on academic staff. A quasi-experimental design was used to investigate the differences between traditional delivery, self-assessment and combined self-assessment with peer feedback. The study …

High-Strength Steel Plates In Hybrid Fiber-Reinforced Polymer-Concrete-Steel Columns: Concept And Behavior, Tao Yu, Lip H. Teh, Muhammad N. S Hadi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Applications of high-strength steel products in civil engineering have been limited by elastic local buckling, by the perceived lack of ductility, and by the perceived difficulties of welding such steels. This article proposes a new column (i.e. high-strength steel plate-concrete-filled fiber-reinforced polymer tube) consisting of an outer fiber-reinforced polymer tube, concrete infill, and encased high-strength steel plates that are connected to each other by bolted angle brackets at discrete elevations. The column offers an ideal opportunity for the use of high-strength steel plates in construction, with their high yield stresses being fully utilized and without welding (and without welding residual …

Correction Factors To Convert Microdosimetry Measurements In Silicon To Tissue In 12C Ion Therapy, David Bolst, Susanna Guatelli, Linh T. Tran, Lachlan Chartier, Michael L. F Lerch, Naruhiro Matsufuji, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld Jan 2017

Correction Factors To Convert Microdosimetry Measurements In Silicon To Tissue In 12C Ion Therapy, David Bolst, Susanna Guatelli, Linh T. Tran, Lachlan Chartier, Michael L. F Lerch, Naruhiro Matsufuji, Anatoly B. Rosenfeld

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Silicon microdosimetry is a promising technology for heavy ion therapy (HIT) quality assurance, because of its sub-mm spatial resolution and capability to determine radiation effects at a cellular level in a mixed radiation field. A drawback of silicon is not being tissue-equivalent, thus the need to convert the detector response obtained in silicon to tissue. This paper presents a method for converting silicon microdosimetric spectra to tissue for a therapeutic 12C beam, based on Monte Carlo simulations. The energy deposition spectra in a 10 μm sized silicon cylindrical sensitive volume (SV) were found to be equivalent to those …
