Magnetoelectric 0-1 composites comprising CoFe2O4 (CFO) nanoparticles in a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer-fibre matrix have been prepared by electrospinning. The average diameter of the electrospun composite fibres is ∼325 nm, independent of the nanoparticle content, and the amount of the crystalline polar β phase is strongly enhanced when compared to pure PVDF polymer fibres. The piezoelectric response of these electroactive nanofibres is modified by an applied magnetic field, thus evidencing the magnetoelectric character of the CFO/PVDF 0-1 composites.

Electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) fiber mats found applications in an increasing number of areas, such as battery separators, filtration and detection membranes, due to their excellent properties. However, there are limitations due to the hydrophobic nature and low surface energy of PVDF. In this work, oxygen plasma treatment has been applied in order to modify the surface wettability of PVDF fiber mats and superhydrophilic PVDF electrospun membranes have been obtained. Further, plasma treatment does not significantly influences fiber average size (~400 ± 200 nm), morphology, electroactive B-phase content (~80-85%) or the degree of crystallinity (Xc of 42 ± 2%), allowing …

The transient of a self-mixing interferometry (SMI) sensing system is investigated in this paper by solving the well known Lang and Kobayashi (LK) equations. Specifically, the influence of two important system parameters, i.e., the feedback level factor and the linewidth enhancement factor, on the transient is discussed, showing that the decay time and the oscillation period of the transient respectively increases and decreases with the increase of the feedback level factor, and both increase with the increase of linewidth enhancement factor. The results presented in this paper are useful for designing a stable SMI system.

In this work we report on recent improvements in the electromagnetic (EM) physics models of Geant4 and new validations of EM physics. Improvements have been made in models of the photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, gamma conversion to electron and muon pairs, fluctuations of energy loss, multiple scattering, synchrotron radiation, and high energy positron annihilation. The results of these developments are included in the new Geant4 version 10.1 and in patches to previous versions 9.6 and 10.0 that are planned to be used for production for run-2 at LHC. Initial development in Europe, particularly in Austria, has encouraged the adoption of the component around the world. Prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) are employed to accelerate consolidation by decreasing the drainage path length. In the present study, using analytical solutions, an attempt was made to evaluate and quantify the effectiveness of two non-conventional PVD installation patterns, involving a parallel drain wall compared with a circular drain ring pattern, in contrast to conventional PVD installation (square or triangular patterns). Combinations of various numerical models and datasets with diverse observation characteristics have been used to assess the mass evolution of ice sheets. As a consequence, a wide range of estimates have been produced using markedly different methodologies, data, approximation methods and model assumptions. Current attempts to reconcile these estimates using simple combination methods are unsatisfactory, as common sources of errors across different methodologies may not be accurately quantified (e.g. systematic biases in models). This paper develops allocation methods for stratified sample surveys where composite small area estimators are a priority, and areas are used as strata. Longford (2006) proposed an objective criterion for this situation, based on a weighted combination of the mean squared errors of small area means and a grand mean. Here, we redefine this approach within a model-assisted framework, allowing regressor variables and a more natural interpretation of results using an intra-class correlation parameter. Atmospheric trace-gas inversion refers to any technique used to predict spatial and temporal fluxes using mole-fraction measurements and atmospheric simulations obtained from computer models. Studies to date are most often of a data-assimilation flavour, which implicitly consider univariate statistical models with the flux as the variate of interest. Internal instability occurs when the finer fraction from a well-graded granular soil escapes with the infiltrates, rendering a filter ineffective. Multiple kernel learning (MKL) optimally combines the multiple channels of each sample to improve classification performance. However, existing MKL algorithms cannot effectively handle the situation where some channels are missing, which is common in practical applications. This paper proposes an absent MKL (AMKL) algorithm to address this issue. Different from existing approaches where missing channels are firstly imputed and then a standard MKL algorithm is deployed on the imputed data, our algorithm directly classifies each sample with its observed channels. Learning to touch-type can be a more difficult task when the user has acquired incorrect or bad typing practices after many years of ad-hock ke\ boarding and computer use. In this paper we introduce a novel training aid to facilitate the learning of touch-typing, particularly the learning of the correct finger-key associations. Two-level Cretan matrices are orthogonal matrices with two elements, x and y. At least one element per row and column is 1 and the other element has modulus ≤ 1. These have been studied in the Russian literature for applications in image processing and compression. Cretan matrices have been found by both mathematical and computational methods but this paper concentrates on mathematical solutions for the first time. We give, for the first time, families of Cretan matrices constructed using the incidence matrix of a symmetric balanced incomplete block design and Hadamard related difference sets.

Mass loss has been increasing over the last 2 decades for the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) but with significant discrepancies between estimates, especially for the Antarctic Peninsula. Most of these estimates utilise geophysical models to explicitly correct the observations for (unobserved) processes. The SAR model is widely used in spatial econometrics to model Gaussian processes on a discrete spatial lattice, but for large datasets, fitting it becomes computationally prohibitive, and hence, its usefulness can be limited. Serial concatenation of Hamming codes and an accumulator has been shown to achieve near capacity performance at high code rates. However, these codes usually exhibit poor error floor performance due to their small minimum distances. To overcome this weakness, we propose to replace the outer Hamming codes by product codes constructed from Hamming codes and single-parity-check codes. In this way, the minimum distance of the outer code can be doubled, which is expected to increase the minimum distance of the serially concatenated code and thus to improve error floor performance. In this paper we present the conceptual design of Libyan remote sensing satellite (LibyaSat-1) and its sub-systems requirements. LibyaSat-1 is a 300 kg mini satellite, which will be used to support high resolution multi-spectral earth imaging camera to fulfill the civilian needs. This satellite will operate at LEO of 775 km and will provide a resolution of 2.5 m for the panchromatic band and 10 m for the VIS/NIR bands with 30 km swath. Feature point detection and local feature extraction are the two critical steps in trajectory-based methods for video classification. This paper proposes to detect trajectories by tracking the spatiotemporal feature points in salient regions instead of the entire frame. This strategy significantly reduces noisy feature points in the background region, and leads to lower computational cost and higher discriminative power of the feature set. Two new spatiotemporal descriptors, namely the STOH and RISTOH are proposed to describe the spatiotemporal characteristics of the moving object. Covariance matrix has recently received increasing attention in computer vision by leveraging Riemannian geometry of symmetric positive-definite (SPD) matrices. Originally proposed as a region descriptor, it has now been used as a generic representation in various recognition tasks. However, covariance matrix has shortcomings such as being prone to be singular, limited capability in modeling complicated feature relationship, and having a fixed form of representation. This paper argues that more appropriate SPD-matrix-based representations shall be explored to achieve better recognition. This paper presents an extension to the KinectFusion algorithm which allows creating simplified 3D models with high quality RGB textures. This is achieved through (i) creating model textures using images from an HD RGB camera that is calibrated with Kinect depth camera, (ii) using a modified scheme to update model textures in an asymmetrical colour volume that contains a higher number of voxels than that of the geometry volume, (iii) simplifying dense polygon mesh model using quadric-based mesh decimation algorithm, and (iv) creating and mapping 2D textures to every polygon in the output 3D model.
