Mujeres Modernizadas: Defining The Implications Of Modernization For Basque Working Women, Natalie Gagliano Jan 2018

Mujeres Modernizadas: Defining The Implications Of Modernization For Basque Working Women, Natalie Gagliano

Honors Theses

While studying abroad in Bilbao, my daily routine consisted of morning classes, tea at the café next to the Guggenheim museum, leisure time with friends in the late afternoon, and finally coming home at 9 pm to a dinner cooked every night by my host dad. The entire day, I was surrounded by the immense pride that the Basque people had for their region, history, and culture. The region is in a state of impressive transformation into a more modern society, while it still maintains the historical aspects of the region that its people take such pride in. Among these …

The Policy Evolution And Privatization Of Commercial Space Systems, Nestor Delgado Jan 2018

The Policy Evolution And Privatization Of Commercial Space Systems, Nestor Delgado

Honors Theses

From the Wright Brothers to SpaceX launching the Falcon Heavy, space systems, and the policies that govern these systems, continue to evolve at a rapid rate. However, as space travel becomes commercialized, the federal government is beginning to realize that it would be cost-ineffective to continue to manufacture, maintain, and operate space systems completely through their own agencies. In result of this, it would be proactive for policymakers to decide what policy tools would be most effective in regulating space systems and the space ports in which they travel. The purpose of this study is to present research on the …

¡El Nuevo Chile Papi!: An Examination Of The Influence Of Public Opinion On The Development Of Chilean Immigration Policies, Nicholas Senften Jan 2018

¡El Nuevo Chile Papi!: An Examination Of The Influence Of Public Opinion On The Development Of Chilean Immigration Policies, Nicholas Senften

Honors Theses

This study sought to determine whether public opinion in Chile had influenced the development of national immigration policies in the contemporary period. It used a comparative historical approach with a timeframe from 1989 to 2015. Because of the study's cause-and-effect element, public opinion served as the independent variable and immigration policy served as the dependent policy. The study measured public opinion through the usage of public opinion surveys previously conducted by the research institutes of The World Value Survey and Latinobarómetro Corporation. The study also synthesized written immigration policy and incorporated visa data from approved visa applications from the years …

Everybody But Us: Constructing Evangelical Identities By Defining The Skeptic, Pace Tyler Ward Jan 2018

Everybody But Us: Constructing Evangelical Identities By Defining The Skeptic, Pace Tyler Ward

Honors Theses

Pew research shows that 25.4% of American Christians identify as evangelical Protestants, accounting for the highest percentage of Christians in America (20.8% identify as Catholic and 14.7% identify as mainline Protestants). Evangelical Protestantism may be the strongest religious force in the U.S. but defining the movement has proven difficult. Researchers have used a variety of definitions to develop a better understanding of evangelical demographics, geographies, or religious strength. My interests and the goal of this research deals more with the performance of these identities; I wanted to know how members of Welcome Church do their Christianity. This research focused on …

Effects Of Emotion And Construal Level On Obesity Stigma, Peyton D. Curtis Jan 2018

Effects Of Emotion And Construal Level On Obesity Stigma, Peyton D. Curtis

Honors Theses

We conducted the present study to determine how emotion and construal level contribute to obesity bias. Specifically, we examined if different emotions, such as disgust, sadness, and happiness, played a role in several different judgments of an obese versus thin individual: 1) general impressions, 2) supporting a friend, and 3) endorsing personal versus biological/environmental causes for weight. We also investigated whether a self me construal or collective we construal influenced these judgments. We additionally considered whether emotion and these construal levels would interact to influence such judgments. The current work found that emotion and construal level did not interact to …

Contemporary Terrorism Paradigm: Terrorist Attacks On Transportation Systems, Gabbi Berlanti Jan 2018

Contemporary Terrorism Paradigm: Terrorist Attacks On Transportation Systems, Gabbi Berlanti

Honors Theses

The Contemporary Terrorism Paradigm has been examined in concept, but little research has applied the theory to specific targeting of terrorist organizations. To build on this limited research, the current study analyzed the number of terrorist incidents targeting the transportation infrastructure in North America, Western Europe, and East Asia between 2001 and 2016 to ascertain if the Contemporary Terrorism Paradigm explains the variance between number of incidents and number of casualties. The use of North America, Western Europe, and East Asia created an opportunity to examine vulnerabilities in the transportation infrastructure and identify areas in the United States transportation infrastructure …

The Space Between: The Interactional Dynamics Between Policy, Organizations, And Social Actors Within The Field Of Sexual Abuse, Elizabeth R. Taylor Jan 2018

The Space Between: The Interactional Dynamics Between Policy, Organizations, And Social Actors Within The Field Of Sexual Abuse, Elizabeth R. Taylor

Honors Theses

Federal and state policy pertaining to sexual assault is broad in its guidelines. In some cases, it is vague. This ambiguity often leads to multifarious interpretations of policy, which can diminish the overall effectiveness. While we know a great deal about how changes in policy shape the outcomes of survivors, we know very little about the context between institutional policy and institutional outcomes: the interpretive practice of social problems within the arena of sexual assault. Therefore, this project will advance knowledge in an area that has very little existing insight. Throughout this research, I observe and document how organizations negotiate, …

It Is Impossible To Overdo Luxury: French Variety Of Capitalism And Its Contribution To Luxury Market Presence, Emily Henderson Jan 2018

It Is Impossible To Overdo Luxury: French Variety Of Capitalism And Its Contribution To Luxury Market Presence, Emily Henderson

Honors Theses

This study seeks to explain the dominance of French companies in the luxury fashion industry. The study aims to prove that France's unique model of capitalism contributed to the strong position of French luxury fashion. By using the theoretical framework of the varieties of capitalism the study analyses France's variety of capitalism, the evolution of the French luxury market, and ultimately compare how French luxury fashion firms fit the needs of the luxury fashion industry. Ultimately, the findings indicate that while the history of French fashion is the cause for its dominance until the postwar period, the French variety of …

Stress In College Students: Associations With Anxiety And Perfectionism, Emory Hamblin Jan 2018

Stress In College Students: Associations With Anxiety And Perfectionism, Emory Hamblin

Honors Theses

Psychosocial stressors are prevalent in the workplace and academic environment largely due to emotional responses from rising conflict, unattainable demands, or a decreased sense of control. An individual's perception of stress is interrelated to the characteristic of perfectionism and the level of anxiety one possesses. Stress is commonly associated with adverse circumstances, and perfectionism is characterized by the setting of unrealistically high standards accompanied by a personal and social standard, attitude, or philosophy. Anxiety is characterized by increased physiological arousal, inhibition of ongoing activities, and a change in individual priorities. Previous studies have examined anxiety's relation to stress-invoking stimuli, but …

Catholicism And Feminism: A Chilean Paradox, Gabrielle Toppin Jan 2018

Catholicism And Feminism: A Chilean Paradox, Gabrielle Toppin

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and women in Chile, as well as how this relationship might be influenced by the authoritarian regime under Augusto Pinochet from 1973-1990. Chile is known as one of the most Catholic and conservative countries in Latin America, and is considered a late female mobilization state that has just recently legalized divorce and has not legalized abortion. The Church played a pivotal role in the defeat of the dictatorship and continues to influence the country's society, culture, and politics. Even as women have entered the public …

Regulating Sex Work: United States' Policy And International Comparisons, Kathryn Rowe Jan 2018

Regulating Sex Work: United States' Policy And International Comparisons, Kathryn Rowe

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the issues with current United States' sex work policies and considers peer countries' policies as potential alternatives by surveying existing research and utilizing case studies. Specifically, this thesis analyzes how American sex work policy restricts bodily autonomy, creates dangerous markets, and hinders efforts to deter sex trafficking. As policy alternatives, this study evaluates German and Swedish policies. German policy provides an example of a fully legalized and regulated sex market, where the buying and selling of sex are legally protected. The study on Swedish policy provides an example of the Nordic Model, where the buying of sex …

A Prediction Of Masterpiece Cakeshop Ltd. V. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, Hilary Price Jan 2018

A Prediction Of Masterpiece Cakeshop Ltd. V. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, Hilary Price

Honors Theses

This is a study of the Supreme Court ruling in the case of Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. The paper attempts to make a prediction of the ruling based on factors relevant to the Court's decision. I studied the facts of the case, the briefs submitted by petitioners and respondents, Supreme Court precedents, interpretive tests, amicus curiae briefs, and voting patterns of the Supreme Court Justices. Based on this information, I came to the conclusion that I believe the Court will issue a conservative ruling in favor of petitioners, Masterpiece Cakeshop.

The Role Of Automatic Mood On Risk Appetite, Makail Johannesson Jan 2018

The Role Of Automatic Mood On Risk Appetite, Makail Johannesson

Honors Theses

Numerous studies over the past few decades have indicated links between subtle psychological influences and decision-making. It is often thought that individuals make conscious choices based on their preferences regardless of whether those preferences are optimal or not. However, it has been shown that most of our behaviors, judgements, and decisions are often a product of unconscious influences. These influences are significant in both simple and complex life situations, including the realm of financial decision making. In this experiment, participants primed with positive evaluative stimuli reported a more positive mood while those primed with negative evaluative stimuli reported a more …

Exploring Announcement Dynamics In Select Republican Primary Elections, Mitchell Redd Jan 2018

Exploring Announcement Dynamics In Select Republican Primary Elections, Mitchell Redd

Honors Theses

This thesis is a reflection of my general interests in intra-partisan electoral conflict. Empirically, my study is motivated by Aaron King's (2017) theory about the relationship between announcement timing in U.S. Senate primary contests and experience in the arena of federal elections. I develop a measure that credits candidates with the highest score if they are an incumbent Senator, then three lower scores ranging from higher office to no experience. I then examine how this measure relates to the timing of candidacy announcements inside nine upcoming Republican primary contests for U.S. Senate nominations. I test two, tentative hypotheses about how …

Analyzing The Use Of Expressive Writing Among College Students, Grace Ann Wilbanks Jan 2018

Analyzing The Use Of Expressive Writing Among College Students, Grace Ann Wilbanks

Honors Theses

This is among the first studies to investigate the naturalistic use of expressive writing in college students. To do so, 255 undergraduate students from the University of Mississippi anonymously completed an online survey. Participants first answered basic demographic questions followed by questions assessing their sadness or depression, happiness, and overall adjustment in college. Next, participants responded to questions concerning expressive writing and ways in which they handled demands of college. Finally, respondents then completed a well-researched, standardized measure of depression, anxiety, and stress. Independent-samples t tests revealed that students who engaged in expressive writing demonstrated lower mean levels of sadness …

Growth Mindset And Persistence In Children's Creative Performance, Tiffany Gerlinger Jan 2018

Growth Mindset And Persistence In Children's Creative Performance, Tiffany Gerlinger

Honors Theses

Motivation literature regarding children's academic achievement is quite extensive and can typically be separated into two mindsets: growth mindset and fixed mindset, which vary on their level of persistence (i.e., effort toward a task, Dweck, 2006). Individuals with a growth mindset find persistence is useful because they believe their abilities can change through hard work. Individuals with a fixed mindset find persistence is not useful because they believe their abilities cannot change with hard work. In the domain of creative achievement there is a lack of research on mindset and persistence during creative performance. Research shows that adults underestimate the …

Suffer The Children: A Collection Of Biographical Stories From Patients, Families, And Professionals In The World Of Pediatric Cancer, Samuel Taylor Farris Jan 2018

Suffer The Children: A Collection Of Biographical Stories From Patients, Families, And Professionals In The World Of Pediatric Cancer, Samuel Taylor Farris

Honors Theses

One area of cancer diagnoses that has garnered much attention in recent years is pediatric oncology. Many adults, certainly not all, increase likelihood of cancer, both directly and indirectly, through usually habitual lifestyles (tobacco use, alcoholism, etc). Meanwhile, children are plagued by cancer through seemingly no fault of their own, provoking widespread curiosity. Researchers tend to analyze pediatric cancer with quantitative data, but this investigation is based on qualitative information, by compiling a list of thirty individuals who have, in some way, been affected by pediatric cancer, and examining their attitudes and reflections in various time stages, outcomes, and relations …

The Evolution Of Trade And Labor Laws In China, Sarah Catherine Hearn Jan 2018

The Evolution Of Trade And Labor Laws In China, Sarah Catherine Hearn

Honors Theses

This thesis investigates the long-term evolution of legislation that contributed to the shift of China from a command economy to an economic powerhouse in the capitalist world economy. Few have discussed whether the concept of neoliberalization, defined as the process of adapting fiscal conservative and expert oriented policies, explains the longer-term trend of Chinese development. Therefore, this thesis sets out to make a determination whether China is evolving towards or away from the neoliberal model. To answer this question, this thesis analyzes two areas of legislation crucial in a free market: China's trade and labor laws since the 1970s. More …

Water, Women, And Migration: Examining The Interconnections Between Water Scarcity, Environmental Migration, And Women In Bolivia, Sarah T. Meeks Jan 2018

Water, Women, And Migration: Examining The Interconnections Between Water Scarcity, Environmental Migration, And Women In Bolivia, Sarah T. Meeks

Honors Theses

Water insecurity has received growing attention as climate change is worsening environmental conditions, and research has established how water insecurity has differentiated impacts according to one's gender. In light of both an increasing trend in environmental migration and extreme weather events in Bolivia, this paper sought to establish environmental migration's explicit role in the relationship between water scarcity and gendered effects. To do so, it addressed the question, how does environmental migration influence the relationship between gendered effects and water scarcity? and hypothesized that migration is a more subtle and overlooked contributor to the gendered effects of water scarcity. The …

Elder Care In Chile And The Us: Two Models Of Culture Change, Sarah Jane Robinson Jan 2018

Elder Care In Chile And The Us: Two Models Of Culture Change, Sarah Jane Robinson

Honors Theses

This project examines two long-term care models: the Green House Project model and the Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged in Viña del Mar, Chile, under the lens of the long-term care culture change movement to explore what can be learned from each of these models to allow elders to grow in dignity and autonomy. The research methods used were primarily participant and non-participant observation, informal interviews, and review of social scientific and gerontological literature. Elements of culture change were found to be present in each model, both of which aim to provide person-centered care to elders. …

Social Evils + Stigma: A Cumulative Study Of Hiv And The Moral Model Of Disease In Vietnam, Argentina And Mississippi, Sarah Thornby Stroup Jan 2018

Social Evils + Stigma: A Cumulative Study Of Hiv And The Moral Model Of Disease In Vietnam, Argentina And Mississippi, Sarah Thornby Stroup

Honors Theses

How can studying such diverse contexts as Vietnam, Argentina, and Mississippi—three cases from opposite corners of the world — provide remediation for the global HIV epidemic? By targeting specific populations of high-risk groups (e.g. injection drug users, females sex workers, and men who have sex with men), analysis of my ethnographic fieldwork in Vietnam, Argentina, and Mississippi, revealed a common denominator of stigma, though manifesting in varying ways, which laid the foundation for this thesis. Building from Erving Goffman's (1993) foundational text on stigma in collaboration with Link and Phelan's (2001) expansion thereof, I define stigma as the differentiation and …

Social Media Use And Negative Partisanship Among College Students, Savannah Maas Jan 2018

Social Media Use And Negative Partisanship Among College Students, Savannah Maas

Honors Theses

Since the creation of the United States of America, the political climate has vastly changed and adapted, each time period with its own distinct characteristics. Today, the American electorate and Congress are more polarized than ever and negative partisan-ship has become a central characteristic in politics. Partisan identities of voters are more homogenous than ever and approval rates of people's opposing parties are at an all-time low. People's political decisions have begun to be more driven by dislike of the opposing party than support of their own. Social media has also grown over recent years and has begun to play …

Brain Drain In Mississippi: Why Some Of The State's Best And Brightest Are Leaving, Savannah G. Smith Jan 2018

Brain Drain In Mississippi: Why Some Of The State's Best And Brightest Are Leaving, Savannah G. Smith

Honors Theses

This thesis is a collection of stories in which I explore some of the underlying reasons that the state of Mississippi is experiencing a large outmigration of educated, millennial citizens, known as Brain Drain. This project is not an academic paper nor is it an attempt to fix the problem of young Mississippians leaving the state but rather an examination of the situation written in journalistic fashion. It attempts to shine a light on an issue that has plagued the state for years and deserves attention. It includes stories about the social climate, economic opportunities, the state legislature, and profiles …

Healthcare Certificates Of Need In Mississippi: Policy Review And Recommendation, Seth Dickinson Jan 2018

Healthcare Certificates Of Need In Mississippi: Policy Review And Recommendation, Seth Dickinson

Honors Theses

Healthcare Certificates of Need, often abbreviated as CON, are public policies implemented across America with many intentions but the primary purpose of engaging the healthcare marketplace in a way that allows for government regulation and monitoring. Over time, states have created their own types of certificate of need policies while others have abandoned these types of policies all together. Mississippi is a member of the former group that has crafted its own type of policies geared towards enabling Certificates of Need. As the healthcare marketplace shifts across America, this research delves into the certificate of need policies of states with …

What's The Payoff? Parental Well-Being In Relation To Attachment, Interpersonal Goals And Parenting Style, Sherlee Q. Chandler Jan 2018

What's The Payoff? Parental Well-Being In Relation To Attachment, Interpersonal Goals And Parenting Style, Sherlee Q. Chandler

Honors Theses

Certain relational frameworks such as attachment, interpersonal goals, and parenting styles either found their roots in or have been studied in terms of the parent-child relationship. What often happens, however, is that researchers focus on how these constructs may affect child outcomes, without studying how they may impact the parents themselves. The current study sought to apply attachment and interpersonal goals in a parenting context, examine how they relate to the helicopter parenting style, and test all three constructs as predictors of parental need satisfaction. Parents of incoming college freshmen (N = 122) completed a survey comprised of the Experiences …

Spain's Rapid Transition: A Case Study Of Late Modernization, Sydney Elizabeth Brown Jan 2018

Spain's Rapid Transition: A Case Study Of Late Modernization, Sydney Elizabeth Brown

Honors Theses

Throughout the mid-twentieth century, Spain was under the control of dictator Francisco Franco. Under Franco's rule, while the rest of the world was modernizing, Spain was a very conservative and traditional society, with many of its traditions and ideals centered on the Catholic Church. As time went on, Franco was forced to loosen his control on Spain ever so slightly, allowing Spain the freedom to begin the process of modernization. However, it was not until after the death of the dictator that the modernization process in Spain was able to fully take off. Spain is a unique case of modernization, …

Examination Of Dental Distress And Anxiety-Related Vulnerability Factors, Sydney Olson Jan 2018

Examination Of Dental Distress And Anxiety-Related Vulnerability Factors, Sydney Olson

Honors Theses

Apprehension towards dental services has been documented for decades, and despite modern scientific advances, dental anxiety and phobia continue to adversely affect individuals' oral and mental health. Furthermore, the prevalence of dental distress is estimated to range from 8% to nearly 30% among community samples. Given the prevalence and impairment of dental distress, understanding the underlying mechanisms is pertinent to finding more effective treatments. In particular, transdiagnostic processes that may be implicated in dental distress include anxiety sensitivity (AS), pain sensitivity (PS), and distress tolerance (DT). As such, the aims of the current study were 1.) to characterize dental distress …

Crime And The Business Cycle In Mississippi, Taylor Thrasher Jan 2018

Crime And The Business Cycle In Mississippi, Taylor Thrasher

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the relationship between crime and the business cycle in Mississippi. Working with a theoretical model of the individual's decision to commit a crime, I show that an increase in legal income decreases an individual's propensity to commit crime. I then use regressions to estimate the long-run and short-run income elasticities of violent crime, burglary, larceny, and vehicle theft. The long-run empirical model shows how income growth effects crime growth, and the short-run empirical model shows how income variability effects crime variability. In the long run, I find that as income increases (decreases), both burglary and larceny decrease …

Active Shooters On Campus: Student Perceptions And Institutional Recommendations At The University Of Mississippi, Victoria Mulvey Jan 2018

Active Shooters On Campus: Student Perceptions And Institutional Recommendations At The University Of Mississippi, Victoria Mulvey

Honors Theses

This study was part of a larger survey that examined crime on a college campus, attitudes about crime on campus, and knowledge about crime on campus. The objective of this study in particular was to evaluate students' knowledge and perceptions about active shooters on campus, and how these factors are influenced by gender. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with current students at the Oxford Campus of the University of Mississippi (N = 482). We hypothesized that female participants would show lower confidence in their ability to respond to (self-efficacy), and higher perceived likelihood and fearfulness of an active shooter event. …
