Pirates And Librarians: Big Media, Technology, And The Role Of Liberal Education, D. Aram Donabedian, John Carey

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The widespread appearance of computers in libraries during the early 1990s elicited a debate among those who welcomed new technologies and those who perceived such changes as a threat to the traditional role of academic libraries and the values of liberal education. At the same time, increasing consolidation of major media channels—including sources of scholarly communication—has allowed a small number of corporations to control distribution and access to the materials libraries offer, through tools such as licensing fees, copyright restrictions, and digital rights management. In response to these barriers, librarians and educators have embraced open access publishing and Creative Commons …

Records And Archives Legal And Policy Frameworks In Uganda, Constant Okello-Obura

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Records and archival materials are the indispensable foundation of the accountability process in any democratic society. Without reliable and authentic documentary evidence underpinning all essential accountability processes, government, civil society and the private sector cannot ensure transparency, guarantee accountability or allow for the exercising of good governance (Schenkelaars and Ahmad 2004). However, the management of these records and archives cannot be practically achieved without proper legislative backings. As noted by Chibambo (2003), a good records management framework consists of information-related laws, policies and programmes, records management standards and practices, and the necessary qualified human resources to implement and manage the …

It is a conceptual paper based on literature review …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This article responds to William T. Caniano's recent article in Library Philosophy and Practice criticizing the Commons model as causing a "labization" of the library, where a focus on high gate count creates noise problems inimical to the traditional scholarly ideal of the library. Caniano further asserts that increased use of laptops and mobile devices in the future will drive down demand for desktops, thus drastically reducing gate count and causing our Commons to become deserted. Lastly, Caniano advocates replacing it with what he calls the "Athenaeum" model. This article describes a number of sections of the Commons literature not …

Engaging Readers, Engaging Texts: An Exploration Of How Librarians Can Use Reader Response Theory To Better Serve Our Patrons, Stephanie M. Mathson

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Literary theorist Wolfgang Iser describes reading as a creative process in and of itself, which adds layers of meaning and understanding to a text. However, little attention is paid to this theory in most Library and Information Science Programs. Because librarians understand the relationships that can exist between readers and books and how strongly books can impact readers’ lives, we should have a deeper understand of what reader response (or reception) theory is. There are a number of ways that we can apply reader response theory to the work we do, including providing readers’ advisory services, developing collections, reviewing books …
