Although librarians have traditionally defended intellectual freedom, the American Library Association (ALA) tends to treat it as a local management issue. As librarianship has become increasingly technical defense of intellectual freedom has diminished. Censorship generates self-censorship and demonstrates a subservient relation to authority detrimental to collection development. Using instances from his professional life, the author argues that censorship infantilizes patrons, discourages critical thinking, and is counterproductive to institutions of higher learning.

Long before the emergence of the World Wide Web, librarians had a long tradition of collecting and classifying physical materials. Influenced by these activities, information literacy instruction has defined and taught sources as objects of similar content and/or format. Because of their ability to organize information for easy retrieval, such definitions are helpful from a practical standpoint. Unfortunately, they do little to account for a source's role as a communicative act shared within and between communities. To expand our definition we must look to Genre Theory. Supervision Of Special Collections In Federal And State University Libraries In Nigeria, R.I. Echezona

This study assessed the supervisory styles in special collections in federal and state university libraries in Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted with purposive sampling to obtain a sample of 178 librarians and library officers in 12 federal and state university libraries in Nigeria. A questionnaire was used in the collection of data. Mean scores and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. The findings showed that approaches to supervision include routine checks of subordinates, periodic evaluation of stock, regular meeting with staff, reprimanding of erring staff, and a liberal supervisory style.

Theft Of Law Books In Nigerian University Law Libraries: An Investigative Study, C.O. Ajidahun

This article investigates the theft of law books in the Nigerian university law libraries. A total of 15 libraries were used as research subjects. Data was gathered using a questionnaire. Result show that virtually all the libraries had experienced the loss of law books. Reference books in law are the main target. The cost implications of the thefts are examined. Possible causes of the theft of law books are also reviewed and suggestions that might reduce the rate of theft are provided.

This study evaluates the content and quality of academic library websites. An evaluation checklist is used as a tool for evaluation of academic library websites. The checklist is divided into five main parts followed by Rating Table. The quantitative pointing system (ten point scale) and five point rating scales are used to evaluate and rank the websites. The study reveals that very few (16 percent) websites provide information about the date of last updating. The study analyzed references listed by textbook authors from Nigerian polytechnics. The educational qualifications, subject background, and institutional affiliations of authors and publishers of textbooks were examined. Documentary research design was adopted for this study. A total of 102 books were examined using the availability sampling technique. Data gathered were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study revealed that a significant majority of the textbooks were filled with citation errors. Findings revealed that a majority of the textbooks used the American Psychological association (APA) format of referencing. Further analysis revealed that a significant number of textbooks had no references at all. …

This pilot study explores the awareness of Library 2.0 among academic librarians in selected universities in Southwest Nigeria. The paper examines resource sharing among libraries and it benefirts for legal research and administration of justice in Nigeria.Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is a critical requirement resource sharing. The use of Z39.50 as an aid to resource sharing is discussed.Categories of resource sharing and the benefits to be derived from each category by the cooperating libraries are also highlighted. Factors that hinder effective resource sharing are identified and analyzed. Recommendations are given for the initiation and promotion of resource sharing among law libraries in Nigeria.

Final year students of Covenant University implore the use of the Internet in writing their projects. An obsolescence study is one of the main areas of bibliometrics in library and information science. The study attempts to discover the obsolescence rate of psychology literature cited in the 141 doctoral theses awarded by the S.V. University Tirupati, Osmania University, Hyderabad, and Andhra University, Visakhapattanam, from 1963-2005. Half-life of journal citations in psychology was found to be 14 years and 19 years for book citations.

This research investigates the preservation and conservation of information-bearing materials in libraries in Nigeria. A survey drew its population from the staff of Delta State University (DELSU) Library, Abraka and Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Library, Effurun. The results show that information-bearing materials are at high risk of deterioration. There is no written preservation and conservation policy, no security policy, no personnel adequately trained in conservation, and lack of conservation facilities and equipment.

This study investigated the availability and use of audiovisual and electronic resources by distance learning students at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN). A questionnaire was administered tothe distance learning students selected across the various departments of the NOUN. The findings revealed that even though NOUN made provision for audiovisual and electronic resources for students' use, a majority of the audiovisual and electronic resources are available through personal provision by the students.The study also revealed regular use of audiovisual and electronic resources by the distance learning students. This study investigated the use of library catalogue in Niger Delta University library. The study employed descriptive research method and questionnaire as a research instrument to generate the data. The analysis revealed that 168 (51 percent) of the users were not aware of library catalogue, and 160 (54 percent) had never used the catalogue. The study also showed that 209 (71.7 percent) encountered difficulties in using the catalogue because of lack of proper education and, as a result, 202 (68.7 percent) of the users resolved to used browsing/reading through the shelves method to locate books. Information in general and libraries in particular can help young people become productive and educated adult citizens. This paper examines the role of libraries in the preservation and accessibility of the indigenous knowledge in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The survey method was used for the study and data were collected with the questionnaire from 82 respondents drawn from six libraries in the region. Niger Delta people use indigenous knowledge to improve agricultural production, acquire education and basic skills, conserve their natural environment, and resolve conflicts.
