A Cognitive Behavioral Treatment For Impulsive Aggressive Behavior In Emotionally Disturbed Children, Laurence Kelly Furgurson
A Cognitive Behavioral Treatment For Impulsive Aggressive Behavior In Emotionally Disturbed Children, Laurence Kelly Furgurson
Master's Theses
Twenty subjects were selected from a clinic population of emotionally disturbed children. The subjects were matched on the basis of classroom impulsivity (Impulsive Classroom Behavior Scale Scores) and age and assigned to either a treatment or control group. Both groups were further assessed by the Matching Familiar Figures Test and frequency counts of impulsive aggressive behaviors in several settings. The treatment group received six sessions of verbal self-instructions via modeling with a response cost contingent upon errors during training and three sessions of training in social problem solving. The control group received no specific treatment. Positive effects from treatment were …
Coping Abilities Of High And Low Jealous Individuals In A Stressful Situation, Elizabeth Roxanne Lindsey
Coping Abilities Of High And Low Jealous Individuals In A Stressful Situation, Elizabeth Roxanne Lindsey
Master's Theses
The major purpose of this study was to examine the coping abilities of high and low jealous individuals in a stressful laboratory situation involving self-dis closure. The hypothesis that high jealous individuals would not cope with the threat of self disclosure as well as low jealous individuals was not confirmed.
Eighty college students were given a battery of personality questionnaires to complete which measured jealousy., anxiety, locus of control, self esteem, self preoccupation and social desirability. The correlations revealed certain differences in characteristics of high and low jealous subjects including the fact that high jealous subjects had a significantly lower …
Analysis Of The Use Of Video Tape In The Assessment Center Method, David Carrington Purdy
Analysis Of The Use Of Video Tape In The Assessment Center Method, David Carrington Purdy
Master's Theses
This study examined the feasibility of employing video-taping procedures in the operation of assessment centers. Six trained assessors observed 23 participants in four separate assessment centers. While one group of three assessors observed the assessment proceedings in person, the other group of three saw only the video-tape playbacks of the performances. A high degree of reliability was found between the ratings given by the two teams of assessors. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation computed on the total scores of all 23 participants yielded a reliability of r = . 86. The Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient was r = . 85. …
Leader, Follower, And Nonleader Patterns In Emergent Leadership, Catherine Mae Holmes
Leader, Follower, And Nonleader Patterns In Emergent Leadership, Catherine Mae Holmes
Master's Theses
In the present research 82 freshmen at the University of Richmond who had previously been administered the Omnibus Personality Inventory (OPI) volunteered for a short discussion session after which each student completed a 9 item leadership scale on each of the other group members. A multiple regression analysis revealed a significant correlation between the Social Extroversion scale of the UPI and ratings of group participation (r=.38, <.01). A post hoc multiple discriminant analysis identified 7 OPI scales which discriminated 64.4% of the cases into correct leadership groups. These findings support a leader-follower-nonleader paradigm for small croup participation, identifying unique personality configurations for each group -- leaders who participate actively and who organize the group process, followers who offer suggestions congeniality and nonreaders who either refuse to interact or become antagonistic to group goals. Suggestions for future research include a need for observer ratings of group interactions as well as more extensive personality measures of social variables such as dominance and social desirability.
Responses To Hypovolaemic Thirst In Gerbils, Patrick Carl Hauenstein
Responses To Hypovolaemic Thirst In Gerbils, Patrick Carl Hauenstein
Master's Theses
In the present study, a series of experiments were conducted to examine how the gerbil responds to an extracellular challenge. Adult female gerbils, weighing from 50 gm. to 70 gm., were either exposed to a 10% (vol x wt) polyethelene glycol injection, or a vehicle control injection. Within each injection level, half of the animals had access· to water after injection, while the other half had access to a .9% saline solution. There was a significant increase in fluid intake associated with injection dosages and animals drank significantly more when exposed to saline than when exposed to water. It was …
The Effect Of Various Cognitive Strategies In The Control Of Public Speaking Anxiety, G. Rex Walker
The Effect Of Various Cognitive Strategies In The Control Of Public Speaking Anxiety, G. Rex Walker
Master's Theses
An experiment was designed to apply the cognitive strategy paradigm of Jaremko and Patteson to a classroom speech anxiety situation. Forty-eight introductory speech students volunteered to be tested on physiological, behavioral, and self-report measures of anxiety during two of their regular classroom speeches. Subjects were divided into groups based upon which cognitive strategy they were asked to implement: rationalization, reversal of affect, misattribution, misattribution and rationalization, a placebo control and a no treatment control.
Results indicated reductions in anxiety across trials, but these were not attributable to treatment. These findings are discussed in terms of the application of laboratory paradigms …
Saturation Patrol As A Deterrent To Crime, Erasmo J. Compatore
Saturation Patrol As A Deterrent To Crime, Erasmo J. Compatore
Master's Theses
In the United States, the rendering of police service is carried out by some of the world's finest forces which operate immediately adjacent to other agencies which have made no earnest move toward improving their methods in field operations since World War II. These deficient agencies seem to cling to tradition and oppose change even when innovations exist which have been shown to be more effective than present methods or when present methods are shown to be ineffective.
It is not surprising, therefore, that only in the last few years has the academician been considered of importance to law enforcement. …

The Effect Of Explanation On The Art Preferences Of Liberals And Conservatives, Joseph Fay
The Effect Of Explanation On The Art Preferences Of Liberals And Conservatives, Joseph Fay
Master's Theses
One hundred thirteen subjects at the University of Richmond were shown twenty-four slides of paintings from four categories of art: simple representational, simple abstract, complex representational, complex abstract. Half of the paintings in each category were accompanied by a one-paragraph explanation. Based on their scores on the Conservatism Scale (Wilson & Patterson, 1968), subjects were divided into two groups: liberals and conservatives. Using Wilson’s (1973) theory of conservatism as the theoretical base, it was hypothesized that, for the unexplained paintings, conservatives would prefer simple art while liberals would prefer complex art.
Efficacy, Contrast Effect And Differential Effectiveness Of Two Time-Out Durations In The Treatment Of Two Autistic Children, Susan Adell Blankenbaker
Efficacy, Contrast Effect And Differential Effectiveness Of Two Time-Out Durations In The Treatment Of Two Autistic Children, Susan Adell Blankenbaker
Master's Theses
A single subject simultaneous treatment design, within a multiple baseline framework, was used to test the efficacy, contrast effect and differential effectiveness of two durations of time-out (TO). With two children on the autistic ward of a residential mental hospital serving as subjects, the TO procedure was demonstrated to be effective in reducing target behavior. No statistically significant difference was found between the 2 minute and 5 minute TOs and limited support for the existence of a contrast effect was revealed. It was concluded that strategies for the facilitation of the use of the shortest TO interval possible should be …
Life Satisfaction And Aging: A Comparison Of Life Satisfaction Index A, The Tennessee Self Concept Scale And Correlates, Ann Rowley Penberthy
Life Satisfaction And Aging: A Comparison Of Life Satisfaction Index A, The Tennessee Self Concept Scale And Correlates, Ann Rowley Penberthy
Master's Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between life satisfaction and other relevant variables in a sample of noninstitutionalized older Americans. Recent research has related satisfaction with life to adjustment in aging. Previous studies, however, have used a variety of methods to measure life satisfaction or self-concept. This study was designed to be an analysis of the Tennessee Self Concept Scale and the Life Satisfaction Index A with selected personal and behavioral variables. 59 subjects, primarily Jewish, aged 56 to 91 were tested during their regular activity meetings at the Jewish Community Center of Richmond, Virginia. The …
Relationship Of State-Trait Anxiety And Type Of Practice To Reading Comprehension Of College Students, Lewis R. Waid
Relationship Of State-Trait Anxiety And Type Of Practice To Reading Comprehension Of College Students, Lewis R. Waid
Master's Theses
Sixty male and female college students of average scholastic aptitude, 30 with high A-trait and 30 with low A-trait, were tested for reading comprehension following either massed (MP) or distributed practice (DP) with narrative reading material. Twice during the experiment the students' A-state was assessed through Spielberger's STAI A-state scale. The findings demonstrated; (a) high A-trait students responded to the experimental situation with greater elevations in A-state; (b) performance on the reading comprehension task was related to A-trait level with low A-trait students performing significantly better; (c) the A-state level of the students immediately prior to the reading comprehension test …
The Leader's Method And The Follower's Outcome: Predictors Of Future Interaction, Geoffrey J. Nimich
The Leader's Method And The Follower's Outcome: Predictors Of Future Interaction, Geoffrey J. Nimich
Master's Theses
In attempting to explain the degree of cooperation in the leader-follower dyad, leadership style and situational outcome, in a mixed motive game, were controlled. 120 business employees, both male and female, were paired with a leader who was projected as a Prisoner's Dilemma game expert. The subject, with the help of the leader who was either democratic or autocratic, then played a round of the game against a confederate subject. The win/lose outcome of the first game was controlled. The subject was then given the opportunity to play a second game against the leader, and the number of competitive choices …

The Effects Of Litter Size On Behavioral Development And Adult Emotinoality In The Rat, Elizabeth N. Pully
The Effects Of Litter Size On Behavioral Development And Adult Emotinoality In The Rat, Elizabeth N. Pully
Master's Theses
The effects of the early experience variable of litter size is examined at two developmental time periods (infancy and adulthood) in the rat. The study departs from the majority of the early experience experimentation in its use of a naturally occurring independent variable in place of the typical handling and shocking procedures. Large (n = 9), medium (n = 5), small litters (n = 3) were developed by pooling rat pups at birth and then distributing them to randomly selected, lactating females. Observations of behaviors (including maternal grooming) during the preweaning stage of development disclosed substantial differences in response activity …
