Verbal Conflict Resolution As Related To The Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey And The Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale, Douglass R. Bloomfield May 1973

Verbal Conflict Resolution As Related To The Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey And The Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale, Douglass R. Bloomfield

Master's Theses

Eleven Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey Scale scores and the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale scores of 80 Ss were related in four multiple regression equations to average resolution times of Approach-Approach, Avoidance-Avoidance, Double Approach-Avoidance Verbal Conflicts and an average time of all conflict types. The four multiple correlations, however, were not significant. Females displayed significantly shorter times for Double Approach-Avoidance resolution than males. No significant sex differences were found for Approach-Approach or Avoidance-Avoidance conflict type resolution.

Low drive Ss as defined by the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale did not significantly differ in times to resolve all conflict types compared to hig.h drive …

Differential Approaches To The Reduction Of Phobic Anxiety Responses, Bruce W. Bundy May 1973

Differential Approaches To The Reduction Of Phobic Anxiety Responses, Bruce W. Bundy

Master's Theses

This experiment was designed to answer two questions: (1) Is relaxation training a necessary element in the reduction of phobic anxiety responses? and (2) Does reciprocal inhibition by relaxation constitute the most viable conceptual basis for the successful operation of desensitization therapy, as compared to alternative interpretations investigated? An equal number of freshman and sophomore college students were assigned to one of three experimental groups and a control group (Reciprocal Inhibition, Habituation, Facilitation, and Control). Treatment effects were evaluated with regard to reduction of snake-phobic anxiety by way of two physiological measures (skin conductance and respiration) and a behavioral measure …

The Effect Of Functional Cecotomy On Food And Water Intake In The Rat, Stephen P. Farr May 1973

The Effect Of Functional Cecotomy On Food And Water Intake In The Rat, Stephen P. Farr

Master's Theses

The effect of functional ceco tomy on ingestion and excretory behavior in the rat was viewed as a short term (ST) and long term (LT) stress adjustment. Findings in bo th ST and LT conditio ns were discussed in terms of the Mayerian parameters of precision, rapidity, sensitivity, and reliability. Under functional cecotomy water intake, fecal moisture content and dry fecal weight increased. Food intake remained constant. Stress adjustment in terms of the 4 parameters of ST and LT regulation were discussed as correlations and their accompanying standard errors over daily, 3-day, and 7-day time intervals. The standard error s …

An Analysis Of Differentiating Personality Factors Between Incarcerated Heroin Addicts And Non-Addicts, Richard Whitely Davis Mar 1973

An Analysis Of Differentiating Personality Factors Between Incarcerated Heroin Addicts And Non-Addicts, Richard Whitely Davis

Master's Theses

The present study was designed to determine if long-term heroin addicts could be differentiated from short-term users and non-users of heroin on a personality inventory and by comparing their worlt histories and interpersonal relationships . Subjects were incarcerated felons at the Virginia State Penitentiary for men, and the data was collected while the men were still in the institution's Receiving Cell. First it was hyr)othesized that four factors (C, L, M, and O) from Cattell's 16 P. F. Questionnaire would be critical in discriminating addicts from non-addicts. When compared, the addict profiles and non-addict profiles did not differ significantly …

Personality Differences Between Males And Females In A Student And Bank Management Sample, Michael G. Howie Jan 1973

Personality Differences Between Males And Females In A Student And Bank Management Sample, Michael G. Howie

Master's Theses

To clarify some of the findings reported in the litera ture concerning the female personality and more specifically the personality of female bank managers, the Guilford Zimmerman Temperament Survey was administered to 33 male and 33 female bank managers and 33 male and 33 female students planning careers in business. A 3 factor ANOV showed that Ss differed significantly between samples and between sexes, but on only one personality trait; emotional stability. A t-test was performed on the scores of the masculinity trait when no significance was found on that trait with the ANOV method. This test showed a significant …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Student Movements In The United States And Japan, 1964-1970, Charlotte Jackson Lerch Jan 1973

A Comparative Analysis Of The Student Movements In The United States And Japan, 1964-1970, Charlotte Jackson Lerch

Master's Theses

The basic question seems to be this: are there, indeed, any experiences similar enough to say that the basic causes of student unrest in the United States and Japan are the same? I would hypothesize that there are. It is my thesis that student unrest and the causes of student unrest in highly advanced countries are similar. While students may be dissatisfied with the same structures within their societies. Therefore, I intend to demonstrate in this paper, my thesis that student unrest and the cause of student unrest in modern countries are similar.

The Effect Of Progesterone On Food And Water Intake And Weight In The Adult Male Rats After Stomach Loads Of Hypertonic Saline, Michael D. Smith

Master's Theses

Eight adult male albino rats were randomly assigned to each treatment condition of progesterone injections (0,10,40, and ·100 mg/kg/day dissolved in Bee of sesame seed oil), and all 2s received a hypertonic NaCl stomach loading. A control group for procedural effects was given injections of sesame seed oil alone and isotonic NaCl stomach loads. The dependent variables were body weight, food intake and water intake. Single factor analyses of covariance revealed a significant difference between the 0 mg progesterone group and the control group for food and water intake but not weight. No significant differences were found in food and …

One-Trial Versus Incremental Learning : A Re-Evaluation Employing Signal Detection Theory, James William Hyams Jul 1972

One-Trial Versus Incremental Learning : A Re-Evaluation Employing Signal Detection Theory, James William Hyams

Master's Theses

The purpose of the present study was to lend support to either the one-trial or incremental theory of learning by examining the probability of correct responses as a function of prior stimulus exposure. Signal detection theory was employed as the method of analysis. Two experiments tested the theories in a verbal learning task and a psychomotor task. On each of three trials a list of 6 AB pairs or 6 AB distances was presented once, then one of these 6 pairs or distances was tested for recognition. On the recognition test either AB (a previously viewed pair or distance) or …

Selected Aspects Of Interstate 295 : The Interstate Highway System Of Virginia, Gilray Moyes Anderson

Master's Theses

This paper has hopefully given the reader a better understanding of the Interstate Highway System in the United States and Virginia through a general history , with related planning and process of a particular road way, I-295. Using 1295, this thesis has attempted to correlate the connection of one planned interstate road way in Virginia with others in the Virginia system.

The interstate highway system in Virginia is the accumulation of the history of roads in the State from the first Indian trails and paths. Based on what the present has given us the future will bring larger, safer and …

Memory Facilitation As A Function Of Category Cues And Stimulus List Construction, Janet Sanford Graves Apr 1972

Memory Facilitation As A Function Of Category Cues And Stimulus List Construction, Janet Sanford Graves

Master's Theses

The capacity to effectively reorganize material to be recalled is perhaps the most essential element in the complex retention process (Deese, 1958). A known type of reorganizational procedure which was shown to exist by Boufield (1953) in his investigation of the retention of a randomized word list is the grouping or clustering of associated words. The results of his study clearly indicated that upon immediate recall of a randomized list, related items, that is, items belonging to the same category, are listed together in clusters.

Teacher Use Of Stimulus Discrimination And Response Cost As Techniques For Reducing Socially Maladaptive Student Behaviors In A Secondary Classroom, Thomas J. Doland

Master's Theses

The present study was designed to evaluate the use of two behavior modification techniques in modifying three inappropriate student behaviors in a secondary classroom. T'he two behavior modification techniques employed were 1) response cost, and 2) the teacher 's use of students' names as discriminative stimuli. The subjects were a D-section Junior English class consisting of fourteen boys and five girls of average intelligence, but who were under achieving academically. The contingencies were applied to all students, utilizing a multiple baseline design. In experimental condition I, the teacher informed the class that ten minutes of free time would be available …

Linwood Holton's Long Quest For The Governorship Of Virginia And Its Impact On The Growth Of The Republican Party, Jack R. Hunter Apr 1972

Linwood Holton's Long Quest For The Governorship Of Virginia And Its Impact On The Growth Of The Republican Party, Jack R. Hunter

Master's Theses

When the history of Virginia in the 20th Century is written, the emergence of the Republican Party as a force in its political affairs will surely rank among the more important events of the time. It is my purpose to examine this event , chiefly in terms of the role played by Abner Linwood Holton, Jr., in his long and successful effort to win election as Governor of Virginia. It is not my intention to say that Holton alone was responsible for the growth of Republicanism in Virginia in the 1960's, nor to suggest that it would not have come …

A Validation Of The Psychologist's Narrative Report In Predicting "Successful" Bank Managers, Peter Stephen Horos Jan 1972

A Validation Of The Psychologist's Narrative Report In Predicting "Successful" Bank Managers, Peter Stephen Horos

Master's Theses

Although company selection procedures for managerial personnel vary widely, they frequently contract a psychological consulting firm to assess the applicant's potential. It was generally assumed then, that this professional information would significantly enhance the selection procedures and consequently improve the quality of the organization's managerial population. However, this assumption was made contingent upon the validity of the psychologist's predictions, with which there has been little research to date.

Recognition And Recall As Measures Of Retention On A Paired Associate Task, David F. Prim Jan 1972

Recognition And Recall As Measures Of Retention On A Paired Associate Task, David F. Prim

Master's Theses

Widely disparate findings concerning recognition and recall as indicants of retention have been reported by several independent researchers. To clarify the problem a list of 8 items, composed of letter-number pairs, was presented 5 times by the study-test method to 160 college undergraduates. The list was learned by either recognition or recall and then tested by either a recognition or recall test after 24 hour and 72 hour intervals. Ss were placed in 1 of 5 categories dependent upon the trial the S achieved 100% criterion. A 4 factor ANOV showed recognition scores to be significantly higher at the .05 …
