Tobacco In East Tennessee, Elsie Taylor Bird
Tobacco In East Tennessee, Elsie Taylor Bird
Masters Theses
Summary:
Burley tobacco requires an annual rainfall from forty-two to fifty inches, the greater part of this preferably during the winter and spring months, a curing season in the fall in a climate suitable for uniform coloring and curing, soils that can be made productive, that are well drained and are responsive to intensive cultivation and extensive fertilization, and a population with the patience and vitality to spend in cultivating the crop.
East Tennessee meets these qualifications. For about sixty years, with a concentration in the upper part of the Valley, the cultural pattern has developed around the yearly sequence …

The Effect Of Pittman Center On The Community Life, Russell Hall
Masters Theses
It can be said very definitely that the school has done a good work of the conventional type in the educational field. It has, without a doubt, changed the moral and religious life of the people for the better. It is furnishing some needed recreation for the young people. It is also doing good work in the medical care and prevention of disease. All of these enterprises are handicapped, however, by the great economic problem which has not been solved and has hardly been attacked.
The Social And Economic Effects Produced Upon Small Towns By Rapid Industrialization, John Fred Holly
The Social And Economic Effects Produced Upon Small Towns By Rapid Industrialization, John Fred Holly
Masters Theses
Introduction: The introduction of an industry into rural areas or small towns, unless they are mill centers, and the absorption of rural peoples into these industries involve many changes of social and economic significance. The shift from an agricultural to an industrial economy has by its very nature many consequences. This study is an attempt to measure, as far as is possible, the effects of such changes.
The City of Elizabethton, Tennessee underwent a very rapid change beginning in 1925 when the American Bemberg Corporation located a rayon establishment there. With the shift of economy many significant changes occurred. Therefore, …
Religious Education In Prisons, John L. Gwin
Religious Education In Prisons, John L. Gwin
Masters Theses
The problem of crime is one of growing importance, and every means available should be used to reform and train the prisoner so that when he leaves the penitentiary he will go out and become a useful member of society. The average age of American prisoners is nineteen years. This means that after a few years most of our prisoners will re-enter society, and certainly it must be possible to do much to help these young people to readjust themselves to our social order.

The Life Of William Carroll, Margaret Leonard Walker
The Life Of William Carroll, Margaret Leonard Walker
Masters Theses
PREFACE: Until recent years almost nothing had been written about William Carroll although he was governor of Tennessee for a greater length of time than any other man and is one of Tennessee's commanding figures. He participated in and was a leading figure in two of the most remarkable achievements in military history: the victory of Horseshoe Bend, and the victory of New Orleans.
Not all the interesting events of Carroll's life have yet been placed before the public; both his character and attainments have been neglected by the historians. It is in order to supply in a small measure …

County Jails In Tennessee: A Survey Of Forty-Five County Jails, Rollin Virginius Wilson
County Jails In Tennessee: A Survey Of Forty-Five County Jails, Rollin Virginius Wilson
Masters Theses
De Tocqueville has said, "The American county jail is the worst prison in the world." The system of county jails has grown up with little interest or attention on the part of the citizens of the state of Tennessee. Some have contended that any sort of prison is too good for the criminal, but the public does not realize that thousands who are innocent, are detained annually in these jails to await trial. Moreover, no man is guilty under the law until he is convicted in the courts.
The county jail, which creates one of our greatest social problems, can …
