Qualitative Exploration Of Factors Impacting Adjustment In Women Survivors Of Military Sexual Trauma, Rae Anne Marie Frey Aug 2018

Qualitative Exploration Of Factors Impacting Adjustment In Women Survivors Of Military Sexual Trauma, Rae Anne Marie Frey

Theses and Dissertations

This project draws from posttraumatic growth and resilience theories, as well as Critical Discourse Analysis and utilizes multiple case study to offer an in-depth examination of the military sexual assault experiences across eleven cases of women who served in the Marine Corps, Navy, Army, and Air Force from the 1960s to the present-day military. The cross-case analysis revealed a three-stage model of adjustment including adjustment to the military culture, surviving the sexual assault, and surviving the fallout, as well as the internal characteristics and behaviors women relied on to navigate these stages. While the data yielded pockets of strengths within …

An Examination Of Response Inhibition Deficits In Symptoms Of Obsessive-Compulsive And Related Disorders, Ashleigh Marie Harvey Aug 2018

An Examination Of Response Inhibition Deficits In Symptoms Of Obsessive-Compulsive And Related Disorders, Ashleigh Marie Harvey

Theses and Dissertations

Response inhibition (RI; the ability to inhibit a pre-potent response) has been proposed as a cognitive vulnerability underlying a wide variety of psychological disorders. In particular, RI deficits have been proposed as an underlying factor in obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) given that they are characterized by largely involuntary and compulsive behaviors. While some OCRDs have been examined alongside RI capabilities, others have not. Further, the current body of literature has a paucity of work examining the three subprocesses of RI (cancellation, withdrawal, and interference control) as they relate to these symptoms. The present study assessed OCRD symptoms and the …

The Tale Of Two Cities: A Feminist Critique Of Economic Development & Neoliberal Multiculturalism In Milwaukee, Yui Hashimoto Aug 2018

The Tale Of Two Cities: A Feminist Critique Of Economic Development & Neoliberal Multiculturalism In Milwaukee, Yui Hashimoto

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I examine how race articulates with economic development in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Drawing on two years of participant observation with the Milwaukee Fight for 15; participant observation of public meetings and days of action; semi-structured interviews with City officials, business leaders, non-profit professionals, and community organizers; and media and document analysis, I find that normative discourses of race underpin economic development in Milwaukee even as City officials and boosters give nominal recognition to racial inequality and purport to embrace diversity and colourblindness.

First, I trace historical and contemporary trajectories of economic development and segregation to show how the …

Abnormal Reward Processing And Visual Selective Attention: An Event-Related Potential Investigation With Remitted Depressed Adults, Kevin Haworth Aug 2018

Abnormal Reward Processing And Visual Selective Attention: An Event-Related Potential Investigation With Remitted Depressed Adults, Kevin Haworth

Theses and Dissertations

Feedback, rewarding and non-rewarding, received from the environment can facilitate learning, influence motivation and shape behavior (Skinner, 1963; Thorndike, 1898). Recent research has indicated that reward can also enhance cognitive processes such as visual selective attention (Anderson, Laurent, & Yantis, 2011a; Anderson, Laurent, & Yantis, 2011b; Della Libera, Perlato, & Chelazzi, 2011; Krebs, Boehler, Egner, & Woldorff, 2011). Depression is one of the most common, debilitating, and costly forms of mental illness (Katon, 1996; Kessler et al., 2005; Mathers, Fat, & Boerma, 2008) and has been characterized by reduced responsiveness to reward (Henriques, Glowacki, & Davidson, 1994; Henriques & Davidson, …

The Effects Of G-Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor (Gper) On Cell Signaling, Dendritic Spines, And Memory Consolidation In The Female Mouse Hippocampus, Jae Kyoon Kim Aug 2018

The Effects Of G-Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor (Gper) On Cell Signaling, Dendritic Spines, And Memory Consolidation In The Female Mouse Hippocampus, Jae Kyoon Kim

Theses and Dissertations

One of the most seminal findings in the literature on hormones and cognition is that the potent estrogen 17β-estradiol (E2) significantly increases the density of dendritic spines on pyramidal neurons in the CA1 region of the dorsal hippocampus (DH). However, the extent to which this E2-induced increase in hippocampal spinogenesis is necessary for memory formation remains unclear. The memory-enhancing effects of E2 in the DH can be mediated by intracellular estrogen receptors (ERs) or by the membrane-bound ER called G-protein coupled estrogen receptor (GPER). We previously reported that infusion of a GPER agonist, G-1, into the DH of ovariectomized female …

An Investigation Of Daylighting Performance In Sidelit Spaces, Zhe Kong Aug 2018

An Investigation Of Daylighting Performance In Sidelit Spaces, Zhe Kong

Theses and Dissertations

The positive influence of daylight on people’s work and well-being has been confirmed in many studies. However, excessive daylight causes discomfort glare, which decreases work productivity, impairs occupants’ vision, and may even cause headaches. Substantial studies explored glare by correlating physical lighting measurements and subjective evaluations. With the development of High Dynamic Range (HDR) image techniques, dynamic changes of daylighting distributions can be effectively captured. Consequently, more studies paired HDR image techniques with subject evaluations to explore glare. However, studies merely relying on field measurements are not only time-consuming and labor-intensive but may also disturb occupants. To address these problems, …

Trans Masculine Identities: Making Meaning In Gender And Transition, Nickolas Hollis Lambrou Aug 2018

Trans Masculine Identities: Making Meaning In Gender And Transition, Nickolas Hollis Lambrou

Theses and Dissertations

Perspectives on transgender identity have evolved through time, and various models of transgender identity development are emerging from multiple fields of study. However, little is known about what gender identity means to self-identified trans masculine individuals. Additionally, across existing transgender identity development stage models, the concept of transition is often assumed to include some form of medical intervention, with the acquisition of such interventions playing a key role in one’s developmental trajectory. Furthermore, current literature often implies transition is an end goal in the path toward integrating one’s core identity. However, there is little to no research exploring how trans …

Neural Correlates Of Memory Decisions Made In The Face Of Conflict, Elaine Mahoney Aug 2018

Neural Correlates Of Memory Decisions Made In The Face Of Conflict, Elaine Mahoney

Theses and Dissertations

We’ve all experienced moments where, for some reason or another, we don’t want to reveal to others what we truly know. The current experiment investigated questions about the behavioral and neural correlates of these types of memory decisions made in the face of a conflicting goal. Participants in this experiment studied several scene-face pairs and were tested with three-face displays preceded by studied scene cues. They were instructed to indicate whether the three-face display contained the matching associate or not. Critically, half of the participants were instructed to simulate feigned memory impairment (i.e. simulators), while the remainder were instructed to …

On The Relationship Between Exchange Rate Changes And Domestic Production: Asymmetric Cointegration Approach, Amirhossein Mohammadian Aug 2018

On The Relationship Between Exchange Rate Changes And Domestic Production: Asymmetric Cointegration Approach, Amirhossein Mohammadian

Theses and Dissertations

In the international economic literature studies mainly focused on the response of output to exchange rate in developing countries and find a positive, negative and sometimes neutral relationship between exchange rate changes and output in short run and long run. Perhaps, the mixed results are due to assuming a linear dynamic adjustment process in all previous models. This study investigates the asymmetry effects of exchange rate changes on output in a nonlinear modeling framework based on bounds testing approach which provides a flexible model to estimate short and long run effects jointly regardless of the degree of integration of variables. …

The Labor Of Play: The Political Economy Of Computer Game Culture, Justin Schumaker Aug 2018

The Labor Of Play: The Political Economy Of Computer Game Culture, Justin Schumaker

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation questions the relationship between computer game culture and ideologies of neoliberalism and financialization. It questions the role computer games play in cultivating neoliberal practices and how the industry develops games and systems making play and work indistinguishable activities. Chapter 1 examines how computer game inculcate players into neoliberal practice through play. In chapter 2, the project shows Blizzard Entertainment systematically redevelops their games to encourage perpetual play aimed at increasing the consumption of digital commodities and currencies. Chapter 3 considers the role of esports, or professional competitive computer game play, to disperse neoliberal ideologies amongst nonprofessional players. Chapter …

A Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of San Juan Red Ware, Robert Jacob Bischoff Aug 2018

A Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of San Juan Red Ware, Robert Jacob Bischoff

Theses and Dissertations

San Juan Red Ware was widely distributed throughout the Four Corners region of the U.S. Southwest between about AD 750 and 1100. Prior research indicates this ware is a marker of identity and was likely associated with feasting and other communal activities. A study of the distribution of this ware indicates that it was traded widely, but with significant variation in relative quantity between sites. This variation is likely caused by unequal access to this ware due either to a lack of access to the necessary exchange networks or by a conscious decision to not participate in the exchange of …

Beauty As A Confounding Variable: Refining Measure Of Viewing Time, Rachael Caryn Pinkerman Aug 2018

Beauty As A Confounding Variable: Refining Measure Of Viewing Time, Rachael Caryn Pinkerman

Theses and Dissertations

Current research on viewing time measures of sexual attraction fail to explore potential confounding variables of viewing time. One viewing time measure, the LOOK, has been shown to be reliable over time and generally correlated with self-reported sexual orientation but has been unable to differentiate between a non-offending group and an offending group of individuals. This study utilizes the LOOK to examine the relationship between viewing time and a potential confounding variable of viewing time, beauty, using two constructs of beauty (facial beauty and full-body beauty). Facial beauty scores were created by measuring the degree of adherence to four universal …

The Role Of The Syllable Contact Law-Semisyllable (Scl-Semi) In The Coda Clusters Of Najdi Arabic And Other Languages, Reham Alhammad Aug 2018

The Role Of The Syllable Contact Law-Semisyllable (Scl-Semi) In The Coda Clusters Of Najdi Arabic And Other Languages, Reham Alhammad

Theses and Dissertations

Final consonants in Arabic are semisyllables; that is, moraic unsyllabified segments that are attached to the prosodic word (Kiparsky, 2003). If this is the case, optional vowel epenthesis in Najdi Arabic final clusters cannot be attributed to violations of the Sonority Sequencing Principle, because sonority restrictions apply within syllables only. In a new perspective, this dissertation argues that the existence of vowel epenthesis in Najdi coda clusters that have rising sonority, and its absence in clusters that have a falling sonority, are instead due to violations of the Syllable Contact Law (SCL), where sonority must drop between syllable codas and …

Advanced Quantitative Methods For Imminent Detection Of Crash Prone Conditions And Safety Evaluation, Zhi Chen Aug 2018

Advanced Quantitative Methods For Imminent Detection Of Crash Prone Conditions And Safety Evaluation, Zhi Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Crashes can be accurately predicted through reliable data sources and rigorous statistical models; and prevented through data-driven, evidence-based traffic control strategies. Both predictive analysis and analysis to estimate the causal effect of traffic variables of real-time crashes are instrumental to crash prediction and a better understanding of the mechanism of crash occurrence. However, the research on the second analysis type is very limited for real-time crash prediction; and the conventional predictive analysis using inductive loop detector data has accuracy issues related to inconsistently and distantly spaced loop detectors. The effectiveness of traffic control strategies for improving safety performance cannot be …

Extraversion, Trust In Institutions And Support For Eu Membership, Ardit Arifi Aug 2018

Extraversion, Trust In Institutions And Support For Eu Membership, Ardit Arifi

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis contributes to the growing literature that calls upon psychology traits and belief

systems to explain people’s attitudes toward their country’s EU membership. By relying on trust in politicians and institutions as well as self-reported extraversion, it argues for a positive association of such traits with people’s support for EU membership. I test my hypothesis with a probability simple random sample that I helped to collect in Albania during summer 2017. I find evidence that people’s trust in country’s politicians, EU politicians, and EU judiciary predict more support for Albania’s EU membership. However, I was not able to find …

Theses and Dissertations

Despite recent change of perspectives and an increase of acceptance of gender nonconformity, the concept of gender still remains a controversial topic. Gender continues to be a developing idea and maintains an influential role in many cultural contexts. Examining facets of gender in various settings can perhaps enlighten our comprehension of such and a further understanding of those who express gender nontraditionally. This study examines the concept of gender in a less traditional stance, exploring views of non-conforming gender expression among generations of Mexican Americans and individuals of Mexican origin. Through analysis of survey data on views of gender nonconformity …

past few decades. Evidence suggests that not all foreign-born U.S. doctorates choose

to remain in the U.S. following graduation. This chapter uses a new data set -

the International Survey of Doctoral …

Structural And Functional Brain Connectivity In Middle-Aged Carriers Of Risk Alleles For Alzheimer's Disease, Laura Korthauer Aug 2018

Structural And Functional Brain Connectivity In Middle-Aged Carriers Of Risk Alleles For Alzheimer's Disease, Laura Korthauer

Theses and Dissertations

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in APOE, COMT, BDNF, and KIBRA have been associated with age-related memory performance and executive functioning as well as risk for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The purpose of the present investigation was to characterize differences in brain functional and structural integrity associated with these SNPs as potential endophenotypes of age-related cognitive decline. I focused my investigation on healthy, cognitively normal middle-aged adults, as disentangling the early effects of healthy versus pathological aging in this group may aid early detection and prevention of AD. The aims of the study were 1) to characterize SNP-related differences in functional connectivity …

Effects Of Life History And Brain Size On Cognition And Behavior: Studies On Prey-Searching In The Spider Pholcus Phalangioides, Joseph Kilmer Aug 2018

Effects Of Life History And Brain Size On Cognition And Behavior: Studies On Prey-Searching In The Spider Pholcus Phalangioides, Joseph Kilmer

Theses and Dissertations

There is tremendous diversity in body size across animals, including many examples of derived miniaturization. A reduction in body size is accompanied by a reduction in brain size, which is predicted to lead to limitations in cognition, but we have yet to find empirical evidence indicating what these limitations might be. I used a behavioral assay common in web spiders to explore this topic. I observed spiders as they searched for prey that they recently captured and lost. This assay has the advantage of being easily quantifiable while reflecting a spider’s evaluation and memory of lost prey. I conducted a …

Uncertainty Assessment Of Spectral Mixture Analysis In Remote Sensing Imagery, Yingbin Deng Aug 2018

Uncertainty Assessment Of Spectral Mixture Analysis In Remote Sensing Imagery, Yingbin Deng

Theses and Dissertations

Spectral mixture analysis (SMA), a scheme of sub-pixel-based classifications, is one of the widely used models to map fractional land use and land cover information in remote sensing imagery. It assumes that: 1) a mixed pixel is composed by several pure land cover classes (endmembers) linearly or nonlinearly, and 2) the spectral signature of each endmember is a constant within the entire spatial extent of analysis. SMA has been commonly applied to impervious surface area extraction, vegetation fraction estimation, and land use and land cover change (LULC) mapping. Limitations of SMA, however, still exist. First, the existence of between- and …
