The Potential For Support Of Gardner's Theory Of The Naturalist Intelligence In Selected Elementary School Library Media Centers, Traci L. Haines May 2001

The Potential For Support Of Gardner's Theory Of The Naturalist Intelligence In Selected Elementary School Library Media Centers, Traci L. Haines

Theses and Dissertations

The concept of teaching to the ability of the child is complex. Each child absorbs, analyzes and processes information differently. Howard Gardner developed a series of eight intelligences describing the variety of ways in which children learn. This study focused on the Naturalist Intelligence, an ability to recognize and discriminate different concepts in nature. A naturalist learner has strong observational skills and is good at sorting and classifying (Checkley, 1997). This evaluation compares randomly selected samples of the collections of two elementary school library media centers in order to determine whether the books in the 500s support Gardner's Theory of …

Char Reaction Kinetics In A Transport Gasifier, Jason P. Jacobsen May 2001

Char Reaction Kinetics In A Transport Gasifier, Jason P. Jacobsen

Theses and Dissertations

In the field of energy generation, coal gasification is one of the burgeoning technologies that are becoming an attractive alternative to conventional coal conversion. This study will provide valuable data to aid in optimizing and understanding this type of technology, in particular the char reactions of a transport coal gasifier that utilizes the M. W. Kellogg process. It has been very difficult to develop an accurate model for this process due to the lack of kinetic/equilibrium data of the coal char re-bum reaction and its effects on the gasification process.

Char reaction data on carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide …

Effects Of Induced Mood On Cognitive Processing In Healthy Older And Healthy Younger Adults, Laura J. Kitzan May 2001

Effects Of Induced Mood On Cognitive Processing In Healthy Older And Healthy Younger Adults, Laura J. Kitzan

Theses and Dissertations

Studies of young adults have shown that in the presence of intense mood states (e.g., sad), the frequency of task-irrelevant, mood-related thoughts increase and interfere with task performance. Gunther, Ferraro, and Kirchner (1996) tested induced-mood effects on long-term-memory (LTM) recognition of young adults as the recognition task became more difficult. The sad group had longer reaction times (RT) and higher error rates at the toughest recognition level than the neutral group. Gerard, Zacks, Hasher, and Radvansky (1991) studied age-related changes on LTM retrieval using the same paradigm. While the younger and older adults had longer RT and higher error rates …

The Effects Of Household Substance Abuse On The Behavioral And Emotional Outcomes Of Child Witnesses To Domestic Violence, Katherine R. Destefano

Theses and Dissertations

Both domestic violence and parental substance abuse are risk factors for childhood developmental delays and emotional problems. The results indicate that child witnesses of domestic violence exhibit a greater level of behavioral and emotional problems when alcohol and drug abuse is also a factor. Following treatment both groups show a greater reduction in behavioral and emotional pathology …

Sibling Effects In The Adjustment Of Children Exposed To Domestic Violence, Nicole L. Mccann Mar 2001

Sibling Effects In The Adjustment Of Children Exposed To Domestic Violence, Nicole L. Mccann

Theses and Dissertations

Many studies discuss how the emotional trauma experienced by children of divorcing parents is buffered by the presence of siblings. This study examined the differences between first born children including only children and younger siblings who have witnessed domestic violence. The Trauma Symptom Checklist and the Child Behavior Checklist were administered to 102 children aged 3-11 whose parent received shelter or outreach counseling at a New Jersey battered women's shelter. Demographic information …

Capturing The Policy That Air Force Raters Use When Writing Performance Appraisals On Junior Officers, Owen D. Stephens Mar 2001

Capturing The Policy That Air Force Raters Use When Writing Performance Appraisals On Junior Officers, Owen D. Stephens

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationship between four dimensions of performance leadership, task performance, interpersonal facilitation, and job dedication and overall performance by junior officers in the Air Force. It was hypothesized that the four dimensions would have different relative importance to overall performance, ratee gender would have no effect on rating policy, and raters with greater experience would show greater rating consistency. Finally, it was hypothesized that the Conscientiousness factor of the International Personality Inventory Protocol and Positive and Negative Affectivity may be correlated with the relative importance of the four dimensions of performance and a rater leniency measure and …

Influence Of Feedback And Comment Labels On Information Sharing In A Computer Mediated Collaborative Environment, Gary D. Denney Mar 2001

Influence Of Feedback And Comment Labels On Information Sharing In A Computer Mediated Collaborative Environment, Gary D. Denney

Theses and Dissertations

A group support system (GSS) uses a combination of networked personal computers, software, and human facilitation to improve the group decision-making process. Group support Systems are being used in the Air Force today in a variety of capacities and in particular by the Warner-Robins Air Logistics Center (WR-ALC) to assess acquisition risks. Prior GSS research has found that certain structural and social dimensions of GSS designs might influence whether optimal process improvements take place. However, the dimensions that positively influence group performance have continued to be a matter of debate. This thesis looked at several structural and social contingencies to …

An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Pollution Prevention In Reducing Environmental Compliance Costs, Douglas W. Gilpin Mar 2001

An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Pollution Prevention In Reducing Environmental Compliance Costs, Douglas W. Gilpin

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of the Air Force's compliance through pollution prevention (CTP2) program is to reduce overall environmental compliance (EC) cost and risk (compliance burden) associated with maintaining compliance at an installation through increased pollution prevention (P2) efforts. However, no quantifiable evidence has been produced that suggests P2 projects are actually reducing compliance burden. Therefore, this research attempts to determine if projects categorized as P2 truly reduce compliance burden. This research demonstrated that, under the current burden calculation methodology, the compliance Site inventory data should not be used to measure or track compliance burden reductions. The time value of money, net …

Factors Influencing Air Force Members' Tolerance Of Fraternization, Amanda G. Brandau Mar 2001

Factors Influencing Air Force Members' Tolerance Of Fraternization, Amanda G. Brandau

AFI 36-2909, provides the current policy on acceptable and unacceptable social interactions between Air Force members. The intent of distinguishing relationships as professional or unprofessional is to preserve proper respect for authority and maintain focus on the mission through professional relationships while avoiding the negative effects of unprofessional relationships. Fraternization is one unacceptable type, which governs relationships between officers and enlisted members. There have long been differences between official policy and actual practice in the area of fraternization. These differences likely influence the acceptance of existing policy, and the amount of tolerance toward behaviors that Air Force policy would consider …

Analysis Of Factors Influencing Tolerance Of Fraternization, George J. Matusak Iii Mar 2001

Analysis Of Factors Influencing Tolerance Of Fraternization, George J. Matusak Iii

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores several factors that might explain discrepancies in the tolerance level of fraternization among company grade officers within the Air Force. Factors that may influence implementation may include the nature of the relationship (platonic or sexual), the sex of the participants (same or different gender or gender of the senior person), whether the incident occurred between people in the same chain of command, and whether the survey respondent was ever stationed at a remote location. This research used a survey sent out to a population of company grade officers and comprising of scenarios that varied the combination of …
