Predictors Of Direct Support Professional Turnover At Residential Facilities For Intellectually–Developmentally Disabled Individuals, Claudio A. Lugo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Turnover continues to be a problem for residential settings that provide services to intellectually–developmentally disabled (IDD) individuals in the United States. The annual turnover rate in residential facilities serving IDD individuals is 45%. Close to 35% of direct support professionals (DSPs) leave their positions in fewer than 6 months and 22% within 6–12 months. Previous studies of healthcare nurses working in hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare settings have found that different factors, such as stress, autonomy, or lack of recognition, contribute to turnover. These factors have not been studied in DSPs working in residential facilities. This quantitative, multiple logistic …

Administrative Support For Music Education As Predictor Of Music Teacher Motivation, Tamara Myles Jan 2022

Administrative Support For Music Education As Predictor Of Music Teacher Motivation, Tamara Myles

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Public school policies that prioritize the growth and success of core academic subject areas can lead to the neglect or devaluation of other subjects, including music education. Because school administrators act as enforcers of such policies, music teachers may perceive administrators as unsupportive, which may influence these teachers’ motivation. The purpose of this study was to explore the extent to which music teachers’ perception of principal support for music education predicted their self-reported motivation for teaching music. Maehr’s personal investment theory, which states that individuals exert greater effort on tasks that exhibit a higher likelihood of equal return, was the …

Maternal Attachment And The Role Of Disparate Biology In Lesbian Co-Mothers, Annisha J. Peets

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Lesbian co-mothers represent a unique population whose alternative family structure has received additional attention resulting from legal changes permitting same-sex marriage. Challenging the heteronormative status quo through lesbian mothering offers numerous facets of familial relationship development and dynamics worth exploring. Prior research has focused on exploring how adoptive lesbian co-mothers navigate the emotional connections to their children; however, it has not adequately explored how lesbian couples negotiate unequal biological ties to their children and the extent to which biology influences which mother forms a primary bond to the child. This study explored the disparate role of biology and any influences …

What Are The Barriers Experienced By Self-Represented Litigants In Civil Court?, Darwin Fitzgerald Rice Jan 2022

What Are The Barriers Experienced By Self-Represented Litigants In Civil Court?, Darwin Fitzgerald Rice

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The Judiciary Act of 1789 permits parties to plead and manage their cases personally or by a defense counsel. The legal provision laid the foundation for self-representation guidelines adopted by the courts. Despite self-representation becoming widely accepted in the legal system, there is limited understanding of the barriers faced by litigants. John Rawls’ theory of Justice written in 1971 guided an in-depth analysis of these experiences. The theory states that with the subject of justice things are just or unjust. With the need to answer the research questions that sought to explore the lived experiences of self-represented litigants, attorneys, and …

Juvenile Sex Offender Motivation To Stop Offending While Engaged In Residential Treatment, Lemeita Smith

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractThe treatment of sex offenders is a controversial issue, yet research on the effectiveness of treatment interventions is limited. There is a great amount of research analyzing the connection between motivation and recidivism; however, what is known about the juvenile sex offender pales in comparison to what is known about adult sex offenders. Utilizing Deci and Ryan’s self-determination theory as the theoretical foundation, the purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the lived experiences of male juvenile sex offenders, to better understand how residential treatment impacted their motivation to lead an offense-free lifestyle. Obtaining this information from the first-person …

Delphi Study Of International Cybersecurity Norms, Kenneth J. Biskner Jan 2022

Delphi Study Of International Cybersecurity Norms, Kenneth J. Biskner

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Unregulated state cyberattacks are an urgent threat to international peace and security because of the costs they impose and the devastating effects they can create. However, international norms governing state cyberattacks (international cybersecurity norms) have not yet emerged. The lack of meaningful consequences for state cyberattacks, and the high rewards derived from them, incentivize states to engage in this new form of hostile conduct (cyberconflict). The problem addressed in this modified Delphi study was the persistent struggle between authoritarian and democratic states over competing international cybersecurity norms that cause cyberconflict to remain unregulated. Kingdon’s multiple streams framework was used as …

The primary purpose of this evaluative case study was to examine the impact of the Harvest of the Month nutritional educational program, which was adopted by San Diego County public schools in 2005, on the nutritional habits and psychosocial …

Young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) continue to struggle with community engagement despite decades of research and policy initiatives addressing postsecondary transition. Evidence shows that persons with IDD are engaging in employment, postsecondary education, independent living, socialization, and other roles at significantly diminished rates, yet little data exists describing this participation in the voices of those affected. The purpose of this narrative inquiry was to describe community integration of persons with IDD in the decade following postsecondary transition in their own words. Investigation Of The Relationship Between Interoception, Cognitive Flexibility, And Posttraumatic Growth, Sheaneh Sattari

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Experiencing a traumatic event is a common occurrence within the world population. Researchers have found post-traumatic growth (PTG) occurs in individuals who grow, adapt, and change after experiencing a trauma. Through the lens of adaptation and neuroplasticity frameworks, cognitive flexibility and interoception can be regarded as forms of change and growth. However, scholarly literature was deficient in the investigation of the possible associations between interoception, cognitive flexibility, and PTG in individuals with histories of trauma. The purpose of this nonexperimental cross-sectional correlation study was to find the combined effect and relative importance of cognitive flexibility and interoception in accounting for …
