Review Of Refugees: A Third World Dllemma, John R. Rogge, Editor, Robert Stoddard Nov 1988

Review Of Refugees: A Third World Dllemma, John R. Rogge, Editor, Robert Stoddard

Department of Geography: Faculty Publications

The mass movement of humans takes on considerable geographic importance because of the associated changes in the source area, in the region of destination, and in the people who leave a home territory for a foreign environment. These repercussions are often accentuated when people are forced to flee their homeland and to beg for asylum in a strange setting. With the number of contemporary refugees in the world greatly exceeding the volume of voluntary international migration, the need among geographers for information about refugees is great. Refugees: A Third World Dilemma, a collection of thirty papers about various aspects …

Linkages Between Regulated And Unregulated Markets: The Case Of Milk Supply In Kenya, Wayne H. Howard, Ian Mcdonald Nov 1988

Linkages Between Regulated And Unregulated Markets: The Case Of Milk Supply In Kenya, Wayne H. Howard, Ian Mcdonald

Agribusiness

Linkages between the regulated and unregulated dairy markets in Kenya were examined using an econometric model of the fluid milk intake for eight processing plants. Counter-intuitive results were obtained: an increase in the regulated price was significant in decreasing intake in the regulated market, indicating that a price increase in the regulated market also increased price and quantity supplied in the unregulated market. Lagged rainfall was a proxy for available feed and was highly significant in explaining milk intake in the regulated market.

Dynamic Adjustment In The U.S. Dairy Industry, Wayne H. Howard, Richard C. Shumway Nov 1988

Dynamic Adjustment In The U.S. Dairy Industry, Wayne H. Howard, Richard C. Shumway

Agribusiness

A dual model is used to examine the dynamic structure of the U.S. dairy industry. Properties implied by the theory of the competitive firm and independent adjustment of two quasi-fixed inputs, labor and herd size, are tested and not rejected. Instantaneous adjustment, however, is soundly rejected for each quasi-fixed input. Input adjustment to optimal levels is estimated to take about two years for labor and ten for cows. Quality adjustments of the labor and cow series do not fully embody the technological change that has occurred in this industry over the study period.

Municipal Courts In Tennessee - A Constitutional And Statutory Primer, Sid Hemsley Nov 1988

Municipal Courts In Tennessee - A Constitutional And Statutory Primer, Sid Hemsley

MTAS Publications: Full Publications

This paper will first examine the constitutional and statutory underpinnings of municipal courts in Tennessee. Then it will briefly review the jurisidiction of municipal courts, the selection of municipal court judges, and municipal court penalties. Finally, it will take a look at the recent case of Summers v. Thompson, Tenn. Sup. Ct., No. 23, filed May 23, 1988. That case has a significant bearing on all of those topics, and it has some implications for what municipal courts will look like in the future. No pretense is made that every important thing is said or every important case is cited …

Initial Test Of A Farrowing Crate With Inward-Sloping Sides, D. Fraser, P. A. Phillips, B. K. Thompson Nov 1988

Initial Test Of A Farrowing Crate With Inward-Sloping Sides, D. Fraser, P. A. Phillips, B. K. Thompson

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

A farrowing crate was designed with sides spaced well apart (1150 mm) at the sow's standing height but angled inward near the floor to restrict the sow's lying area and to prevent the sow from dropping suddenly onto one side. Survival and body-weight data were collected for 20 farrowings in the prototype crate and for 18-20 farrowings in each of 3 other crate types. No significant differences were found in stillbirth rate, other deaths to 14 days, or average piglet weight gains, but gains were somewhat more variable in one of the conventional designs which interfered with the piglets' access …

Comprehension Of "Absence" By An African Grey Parrot: Learning With Respect To Questions Of Same/Different, Irene M. Pepperberg Nov 1988

Comprehension Of "Absence" By An African Grey Parrot: Learning With Respect To Questions Of Same/Different, Irene M. Pepperberg

Sentience Collection

An African Grey parrot, Alex, learned to report on the absence or presence of similarity and difference between two objects. Alex was shown pairs of objects that were (a) totally dissimilar, (b) identical, or (c) similar or different with respect to one of three attributes (color, shape, or material). In the first two cases, he responded to the respective queries of "What's same?" or "What's different?" with the vocalization "none," and in the third case he responded with the appropriate category label ("color," "shape," or "mah-mah" [matter]). His accuracy was 80.9% to 83.9% for pairs of familiar objects not used …

Aristotle' S Three Cities And The Problem Of Faction, John Patrick Coby Nov 1988

Aristotle' S Three Cities And The Problem Of Faction, John Patrick Coby

Government: Faculty Publications

Aristotle describes the polis as a self-sufficient compound. Its regime, he says, is responsible for shaping the whole character of the city' s people. But rarely is the city unified in its parts, and the formative power of the regime is not always this extensive. There are in fact three kinds of cities depicted in the Politics. They differ by the degree of partnership tying city members together. Accordingly, the problem of faction and its cure differs for each: for some cities, where the regime is unitary, the cure is consent; for others, with mixed regimes, it is participation; but …

The Interaction Of Implicit And Explicit Contracts In Repeated Agency, Martin Shubik Nov 1988

The Interaction Of Implicit And Explicit Contracts In Repeated Agency, Martin Shubik

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This article deals with experimental games as they pertain to game theory. As such there is a natural distinction between experimentation with abstract games devoted to testing a specific hypothesis in game theory and games with a scenario from a discipline such as economics or political science where the game is presented in the context of some particular activity.
