Dorothy Thompson: Withstanding The Storm, Michael J. Kirkhorn
Dorothy Thompson: Withstanding The Storm, Michael J. Kirkhorn
The Courier
The "unremitting terror" of totalitarianism was Dorothy Thompson's nightmare. She witnessed the atrocities of Nazism, and later, after the Second World War, the cruelty of Soviet communism. The violent will to power that she described for her millions of readers was for her the nemesis of all hope and goodness. It could not be appeased, it could not be satisfied; it had to be resisted. Her profound recognition of that single necessity, and her frustration with the complacency with which this great threat was met at home drew her, one of the great political journalists of the century, into misjudments …

The Bureau of Reclamation recently announced that its prime mission since 1902-building dams to make the desert bloom in the American West-is pretty much complete. While never really admitting that its newer projects have been economically infeasible, Bureau management has at last recognized that the days of the big public water project are gone. The Bureau now plans to turn its attention and resources to other more pressing problems, such as helping other agencies with construction projects needed to cope with hazardous waste.

History Theses & Dissertations
On July 27, 1952, the Congress of the United States of America passed, over President Harry s. Truman's veto, the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952, more commonly known as the McCarran-Walter Act. The act codified almost all existing laws relative to immigration and naturalization and newly incorporated more strict exclusion provisions.
This paper analyzes the legislative process from the passage of the act in 1952 to its major revision in 1965. The paper analyzes that the act was a mere reaffirmation of the pre-war immigration policy and thus not reappraisal or reformation in the drastically changed world milieu. The …

Meeting The Patron At The Opac Crossroads: The Reference Librarian As An Online Consultant, Robert A. Aken
Library Faculty and Staff Publications
Reference librarians play an important role when users interact with online catalogs. As consultants at the point of interaction they must educate patrons in the use of the machine and demonstrate their role in finding and providing information. Specific areas of consultation are discussed as is the relationship of formal instruction to point-of-use instruction. The librarian's efficiency and filtering roles are emphasized.

Cultural competence is a set of congruent behaviors, attitudes and policies that come together in a system, agency or professional to work effectively in cross-cultural situations. The word culture is used because it implies having the capacity to function effectively. A culturally competent system of care acknowledges and incorporates - at all levels - the importance of culture, the assessment of cross-cultural relations, vigilance towards the dynamics that result from cultural differences, the expansion of cultural knowledge and the adaptation of services to meet culturally unique needs.
