The Illawarra Diary Of Lady Jane Franklin, 10-17 May 1839, Michael K. Organ

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

Jane Franklin, the wife of Sir John Franklin, Governor of Tasmania, travelled overland from Port Phillip to Sydney in 1839. During the trip she kept detailed diary notes and wrote a number of letters. Between 10-17 May 1839 she journeyed to the Illawarra region on the coast of New South Wales. A transcription of the original diary notes is presented, along with descriptive introduction to the life and times of Jane Franklin.

B822: The Economic Benefits Of Late-Season Black Fly Control, Stephen D. Reiling, Kevin Boyle, Marcia L. Phillips, Vicki A. Trefts, Mark W. Anderson

Bulletins

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) contracted with the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Maine to study the economic benefits of black fly control. The DEP requested that the study focus on the benefits of late-season black fly control. This decision was based on the belief that any control program for black flies would be initially directed toward the late-season varieties since they primarily exist along the Penobscot River between the towns of Millinocket and Howland. The purpose of this report is to present the results of a study to measure the economic benefits …

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Suspended-Sediment Yield In The Saskatchewan River Basin, Peter Ashmore, T J. Day Sep 1988

Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Suspended-Sediment Yield In The Saskatchewan River Basin, Peter Ashmore, T J. Day

Geography & Environment Publications

Long-term suspended-sediment concentration and load records are available for 23 Water Survey of Canada sediment-monitoring stations in the Saskatchewan River basin, where the drainage areas range from 10 to over 300 000 km2. Mean annual sediment yield is greatest in the western Alberta Plains along the Oldman and Red Deer rivers (over 100 t km−2 year−1) and tends to increase downstream along the North and South Saskatchewan rivers until major reservoirs in Saskatchewan intervene. Average sediment concentration shows a pattern of variation similar to that of yield. Temporal aspects of suspended-sediment transport vary along the …

Mental Health Treatment Refusal In Correctional Institutions: A Sociological And Legal Analysis, Rudolph Alexander Jr. Sep 1988

Mental Health Treatment Refusal In Correctional Institutions: A Sociological And Legal Analysis, Rudolph Alexander Jr.

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Recently, the courts have recognized the right to a minimum level of mental health treatment for individuals confined in both mental and correctional institutions, utilizing a different rationale for each system. As mental health administrators in state mental hospitals accepted that they were responsible for providing an increased level of mental health services, they were disappointed that courts had subsequently ruled that individuals in state hospitals had a right to refuse treatment. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate, sociologically and legally, upon treatment refusal in the correctional system since most of the attention on treatment refusal has focused …

Recisions, Organizational Conditions And Job Satisfaction Among Black And White Human Service Workers: A Research Note, R. L. Mcneely Sep 1988

Recisions, Organizational Conditions And Job Satisfaction Among Black And White Human Service Workers: A Research Note, R. L. Mcneely

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Despite the growing attention evident in the human services literature on the related topics of job satisfaction and burnout, virtually none of the empirical studies published to date have examined the possible influences of recent federal and state cutbacks in human service funding levels on the job satisfaction of human service workers. One outcome of these cutbacks has been the curtailment of services offered by county welfare departments, often achieved by reducing the number of public welfare workers through hiring freezes, attrition, layoffs, etc. The remaining public welfare workers often have then been placed in the unenviable position of trying …

The Effect Of Deliberate Faking Good And Faking Bad On Spiritual Well-Being Scale Scores In A Church Sample, Alice V. Moody Sep 1988

The Effect Of Deliberate Faking Good And Faking Bad On Spiritual Well-Being Scale Scores In A Church Sample, Alice V. Moody

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

This study investigated the effect of faking (good and bad) on Spiritual Well-being (SWB) Scale scores. It is a true experiment with three levels of the independent variable: fake good, honest responding, and fake bad instructions. The sample consisted of 172 adults from a community church Sunday School class and a group for those overcoming some addiction and/or abuse. A demographic questionnaire was given along with the SWB Scale. An analysis of variance was run for each of the dependent measures: SWB and its two subscales, Religious Well-being (RWB) and Existential Well·being (EWB) . ANOVA and Scheffe post hoc test …

Modeling Cadastral Spatial Relationships, Kenneth Dueker, Daniel Kjerne Sep 1988

Modeling Cadastral Spatial Relationships, Kenneth Dueker, Daniel Kjerne

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

Research exploring the object-oriented paradigm as a tool with which to model location of objects in maps is reported. The research led us into three areas:

  • the use of an object-oriented language, Smalltalk.-80 to model cadastral location using the object-oriented paradigm.
  • study of the development of spatial information systems, such as engineering design and computer-aided design(CAD) database systems based on object-oriented ideas, to see how that approach might be useful for developing a mapping system.
  • Finally, the conceptual exploration of how an object-oriented approach might facilitate linkages of location among layers of a land information system.

Future research is needed …
