A Case Study In Rumor Transmission Based On The Leo Frank Case, George Mark Jackson Jan 1988

A Case Study In Rumor Transmission Based On The Leo Frank Case, George Mark Jackson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the process of rumor transmission in an historical context. The basis was a case study of the Leo Frank incident. The editorials of Populist editor Tom Watson, written during Frank's appeal and commutation, were tested for emotional intensity. Significant findings tended to support the anxiety component of the Rosnow/Fine model for rumor transmission. The study was limited as there was no control condition without anxiety.

On The Use Of Positive Reinforcement To Minimize The Problem Of Overdue Library Materials, W. Bede Mitchell Jan 1988

On The Use Of Positive Reinforcement To Minimize The Problem Of Overdue Library Materials, W. Bede Mitchell

Library Faculty Publications

Few issues in librarianship have been as long-lived and frustrating to address as the problem of overdue library materials. Even the most cursory review of the professional literature finds dozens of articles about the problem of overdues.(1) Most of the literature appears to have been written under the assumption that only negative reinforcement techniques (e.g., fines, blocking further borrowing, legal action, etc.) can be effective in minimizing the problem of overdue library materials. However, many librarians have expressed dissatisfaction with the use of fines and other sanctions. Unfortunately, the alternative methods for minimizing overdues have produced mixed results. For example, …

Political Apathy In Poland, David S. Mason Jan 1988

Political Apathy In Poland, David S. Mason

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Strikes in Poland during April and May 1988 demonstrate once again the stalemate confronting regime and populace. Although Jaruzelski cannot mobilize support for economic reforms, Solidarity also lacks the power to force the regime toward the political reforms it deems necessary for Poland's salvation.

Multiple Jeopardy, Multiple Consciousness: The Context Of A Black Feminist Ideology, Deborah K. King Jan 1988

Multiple Jeopardy, Multiple Consciousness: The Context Of A Black Feminist Ideology, Deborah K. King

Dartmouth Scholarship

Black women have long recognized the special circumstances of our lives in the United States: the commonalities that we share with all women, as well as the bonds that connect us to the men of our race. We have also realized that the interactive oppressions that circumscribe our lives provide a distinctive context for black womanhood. For us, the notion of double jeopardy is not a new one. Near the end of the nineteenth century, Anna Julia Cooper, who was born a slave and later became an educator and earned a Ph.D., often spoke and wrote of the double enslavement …

Problems Encountered With The Readability Of Social Studies Books, Peggy Drinovsky Jan 1988

Problems Encountered With The Readability Of Social Studies Books, Peggy Drinovsky

Graduate Research Papers

Readability of social studies texts has been and continues to be a concern of teachers when choosing a new series to use in the school. Teachers using readability formulas have come away feeling dissatisfied, as there are always students who should be able to read the book but cannot, or ones who should not be able to read the book but can, according to the formulas used. Obtaining the readability of a given text is quick and easy but it diagnoses the text rather than the student, as it gives the grade level of the text not the reading level …

The Popularity Of Integration Models, 1980-1985, James D. Foster Jan 1988

The Popularity Of Integration Models, 1980-1985, James D. Foster

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Farnsworth’s five integration models were used to categorize integration articles published in the Journal of Psychology and Theology between 1980 and 1985. In addition, the graduate education of article authors was examined to determine if educational background influenced integration approach. Of the 177 articles reviewed, 52 reported research and 76 were considered integration articles. Results of the review indicate that one integration model accounts for nearly two-thirds of the integration work presented in JPT during this period and that differences in educational preparation do not produce preferences for particular integration approaches.

Value-Added Per Worker, Capital Accumulation And Technical Progress In A Small, Open Economy: An Explanation, Hian Teck Hoon Jan 1988

Value-Added Per Worker, Capital Accumulation And Technical Progress In A Small, Open Economy: An Explanation, Hian Teck Hoon

Research Collection School Of Economics

Within the context of industrial restructuring, it is not uncommon to use terms, such as 'higher value-added per worker', or 'low or high value added activities', and 'high technology' industries. The present note attempts to use the theoretical work in the field of international trade to sharpen our understanding of the relationships among the concepts of value added per worker, capital accumulation, and technical progress. We show that for a large country, capital accumulation raises the real value added per worker in both industries. With neutral technical progress occurring in the L-intensive industry, it is possible for the terms of …
