Changes In Stature And Health Status As Related To The Emergence Of Diabetes Among Eastern Cherokee Indians In North Carolina, Deann Lee Stivers

Doctoral Dissertations

Health conditions such as the presence of infectious and acute diseases, substandard living conditions, and nutritional status may influence the attainment of adult stature among Eastern Cherokees living in the western North Carolina mountains in the late Nineteenth Century. Stature measurements and genealogical information were collected in 1892 by Fred Starr under the direction of Franz Boas. Living descendants of individuals measured in 1892 were identified. This sample was measured and interviewed. These data sets were used to access the attainment of height among adolescents and adults.

Historical photos taken by Mooney (circa 1880) provided visual image of fat patterning …

Immunoglobulin Haplotypes – Markers Of Reproductive Success, Joan C. Stevenson, Moses S. Schanfield, Michael H. Crawford, Phillip Mark Everson Aug 1990

Immunoglobulin Haplotypes – Markers Of Reproductive Success, Joan C. Stevenson, Moses S. Schanfield, Michael H. Crawford, Phillip Mark Everson

Anthropology Faculty and Staff Publications

Immunoglobulin haplotypes are highly polymorphic and are useful for analyses of both macro- and microdifferentiation of populations. The origins of this diversity are not known, but recent reports suggest strong selection at this locus. Increased rates of first-trimester spontaneous abortions have been reported when parents share GM phenotypes. Reduced fertility has been observed in mixed European descent white and Hutterite populations when both parents share immunoglobulin haplotypes. Population samples with completed family information and GM haplotype data are rare; the objective here is to provide this information on another sample. A sample of 242 Mennonite couples with mothers older than …

The Effect Of Family Environment And Medication On Peer Relations Of Adhd Children, Kay D. Congdon Aug 1990

The Effect Of Family Environment And Medication On Peer Relations Of Adhd Children, Kay D. Congdon

Master's Theses

This study examined the influence of family functioning and medication on the peer relations of ADHD children. Experiment 1 focused on parental functioning -- patterns of parenting, stress and conflict, and parental psychopathology -- and how these variables affected ADHD children's peer relations. Experiment 2 examined the effects of Ritalin on peer relations in ADHD children. In Experiment 1, pervasive ADHD (PADHD) and situational ADHD (SADHD) children were assessed for peer relations, family management, family stress, and parental psychopathology. Significant differences were found between mothers of PADHD children and mothers of SADHD children in the Stress Analysis System (Accountability and …

Blaming It On God: Considerations When Presented With Supernatural Explanatory Entities, James M. Donovan Aug 1990

Blaming It On God: Considerations When Presented With Supernatural Explanatory Entities, James M. Donovan

James M. Donovan

If the presence of an anthropologist at a fieldsite indicates that there exist unknowns, then for that anthropologist off-handedly to dismiss informant responses as irrelevant, inadequate, or otherwise poor explanations for observed phenomena is an intellectually arrogant, if not dangerous act.

What then does the anthropologist do with statements that "god willed it" and "the spirits did it"? To dismiss them without good reasons is to be guilty of intellectual condescension; but what constitutes a "good reason," either to reject or to accept such testimony? This essay seeks to consider just such "good reasons," to see if they are as …

A Functional Central Limit Theorem For Strong Mixing Stochastic Processes, Donald W.K. Andrews, David Pollard Aug 1990

A Functional Central Limit Theorem For Strong Mixing Stochastic Processes, Donald W.K. Andrews, David Pollard

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper shows how the modern machinery for generating abstract empirical central limit theorems can be applied to arrays of dependent variables. It develops a bracketing approximation based on a moment inequality for sums of strong mixing arrays, in an effort to illustrate the sorts of difficulty that need to be overcome when adapting the empirical process theory for independent variables. Some suggestions for further development are offered. The paper is largely self-contained.

International Diversification Of Social And Private Risk: The Us And Japan, Stephen S. Golub Aug 1990

International Diversification Of Social And Private Risk: The Us And Japan, Stephen S. Golub

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper concerns the gains from international trade in risky assets, with an application to the United States and Japan. I examine the role of international financial markets in diversifying the risks associated with the aggregate consumption opportunities of a nation (social risk) and the risks related to individual agents’ consumption opportunities (private risk). The main empirical result is that international portfolio diversification between the United States and Japan leads to small reductions in social risk but large reductions in some private risks, especially for corporate profits.

A Study Of Pease Elementary School, Odessa, Texas; The Development Of The Pease Elementary School Neighborhood And Its Changing Demographic Characteristics, Harriet Jan Rudd

Graduate Theses

The economic development of the city of Odessa flourished when oil was discovered in the Permian Basin. Oil field service businesses opened which provided jobs for the educated as well as for the uneducated. These available jobs encouraged people to move to Odessa. In 1958, Pease Elementary was built. The area around the school was being developed by local developers. The city grew to the east which decreased development in west Odessa. There have been no significant residential developments in the Pease neighborhood since 1981. This neighborhood has basically been unchanged for ten years. During this time the properties have …

At-Risk Students' Reports Of Teachers' Instructional Behavior, Virginia E. Rios Aug 1990

At-Risk Students' Reports Of Teachers' Instructional Behavior, Virginia E. Rios

Graduate Theses

This study investigated secondary teachers' instructional behavior from the at-risk students' perspective. The research concentrated on three areas— teaching styles, teacher encouragement, and homework assignments. A series of interviews with at-risk students yielded the following results: When dealing with at-risk students (1) most teachers use only two of four modalities (auditory and visual) in their teaching approach, (2) teachers do not encourage these students, and (3) teachers assign homework less than half of the time. When homework is assigned it is completed by students approximately half of the time.

Citizens, Development Interests, And Local Land-Use Regulation, Arnold Fleischmann, Carol A. Pierannunzi Aug 1990

Citizens, Development Interests, And Local Land-Use Regulation, Arnold Fleischmann, Carol A. Pierannunzi

Faculty Articles

Local governments confer significant benefits and costs on individuals and businesses through their power to regulate private land use. This article analyzes such regulation by using discriminant analysis to test a model of rezoning decision making. The results indicate that the best predictor of a local governing body's decision in a rezoning case is the recommendation of the appointed planning commission. This is contrary to both scholarly and popular expectations that pressure by developers or public protest is the major factor influencing elected officals in rezoning cases. The results suggest that citizen advisory boards may have significant effects on local …

Interstate Differences In Employer Tax Costs And Worker Benefits Of Unemployment Insurance: A Micro-Simulation Approach, Timothy L. Hunt, Christopher J. O'Leary, Wei-Jang Huang Aug 1990

Interstate Differences In Employer Tax Costs And Worker Benefits Of Unemployment Insurance: A Micro-Simulation Approach, Timothy L. Hunt, Christopher J. O'Leary, Wei-Jang Huang

Reports

This study compares employer unemployment insurance (UI) tax costs and worker UI benefits across the 28 largest industrial states for 1988. The comparison is done using a detailed computerized micro-simulation model which computes the worker UI benefits and employer UI taxes for each state. Assumed characteristics of employers and employees are held constant across the states so that differences in UI costs and benefits among the states can be attributed entirely to differences in UI statutes. The principal findings of this study are: (1) the UI system can be modeled fruitfully at the firm level, (2) there are significant UI …
