Efficiency Mages. Mark-Up Pricing And Effective Demand, Peter Skott Feb 1990

Efficiency Mages. Mark-Up Pricing And Effective Demand, Peter Skott

Peter Skott

The combination of an efficiency wage approach with the explicit consideration of pricinq and product market conditions leads to the existence of a unique NAIRU. The value of the NAIRU can be influenced by a variety of supply side policies but aqqreqate demand policies may also play a role. The effort function will be related to workers' waqe aspirations and if waqe aspirations depend on past outcomes of the distributional struqqle then an important element of hysteresis is introduced into the system. Expansionary demand policies which increase employment will be asaociated with unanticipated inflation. Real waqes will fall below the …

Population Estimates For Oregon 1980-1989, Population Research Center, Portland State University Feb 1990

Population Estimates For Oregon 1980-1989, Population Research Center, Portland State University

Oregon Population Estimates and Reports

This report provides population estimates for Oregon and its counties and cities for the years 1980 through 1989. As mandated by Oregon law, the Center for Population Research and Census at Portland State University, acting on behalf of the State Board of Higher Education, annually estimates the July 1 population for each incorporated city and county in Oregon. These figures must be certified to the Secretary of State by December 15. When certified the population estimates are used in the allocation of certain state tax revenues to cities and counties.

Clarke, Coal And Controversy: The Traumas Of Reverend W.B. Clarke In His Defence Of Australian Geology During The Nineteenth Century, Michael K. Organ Feb 1990

Clarke, Coal And Controversy: The Traumas Of Reverend W.B. Clarke In His Defence Of Australian Geology During The Nineteenth Century, Michael K. Organ

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

[Extract] Though readily given the title Father of Australian geology , the Reverend W.B. Clarke remains something of a mysterious figure to Australian geologists. When asked what his major achievements were, few would be able to offer an answer. Yet such disregard is commonly the fate of many pioneers in the field of science, for once a discovery is made, or theory proven, the profession moves on to new and more challenging fields, with scant regard for the foundations upon which current work is based.... William Branwhite Clarke (1798-1878) was a pioneer in the field of Australian science who, though …

A Colored Version Of Tverberg's Theorem, Imre Bárány, D. G. Larman Feb 1990

A Colored Version Of Tverberg's Theorem, Imre Bárány, D. G. Larman

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

The main result of this paper is that given n red, n white, and n green points in the plane, it is possible to form n vertex-disjoint triangles Δ 1 ,…,Δ n in such a way that the Δ i has one one red, one white, and one green vertex for every i = 1,…, n and the intersection of these triangles is nonempty.

Aggregation And Social Choice: A Mean Voter Theorem, Andrew S. Caplin, Barry Nalebuff Feb 1990

Aggregation And Social Choice: A Mean Voter Theorem, Andrew S. Caplin, Barry Nalebuff

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A celebrated result of Black (1984a) demonstrates the existence of a simple majority winner when preferences are single-peaked. The social choice follows the preferences of the median voter’s most preferred outcome beats any alternative. However, this conclusion does not extend to elections in which candidates differ in more than one dimension. This paper provides a multi-dimensional analog of the median voter result. We show that the mean voter’s most preferred outcome is unbeatable according to a 64%-majority rule. The weaker conditions supporting this result represent a significant generalization of Caplin and Nalebuff (1988). The proof of our mean voter result …

Cognitive Behavioral Group Treatment For Social Phobia: Comparison With A Credible Placebo Control, Richard G. Heimberg, Cynthia S. Dodge, Debra A. Hope, Charles R. Kennedy, Linda J. Zollo, Robert E. Becker Feb 1990

Cognitive Behavioral Group Treatment For Social Phobia: Comparison With A Credible Placebo Control, Richard G. Heimberg, Cynthia S. Dodge, Debra A. Hope, Charles R. Kennedy, Linda J. Zollo, Robert E. Becker

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Forty-nine patients participated in a study comparing cognitive-behavioral group treatment (CBGT) for social phobia with a credible placebo control. CBGT consisted of exposure to simulated phobic events, cognitive restructuring of maladaptive thoughts, and homework for self-directed exposure and cognitive restructuring between sessions. Control patients received a treatment package consisting of lecture-discussion and group support that was comparable to CBGT on measures of treatment credibility and outcome expectations. At pretest, posttest, and 3- and 6-month follow-ups, patients completed assessments that included clinician ratings, self-report measures, and behavioral physiological and cognitive-subjective measures derived from a behavioral simulation of a personally relevant phobic …

Aggregation And Imperfect Competition: On The Existence Of Equilibrium, Andrew S. Caplin, Barry Nalebuff Feb 1990

Aggregation And Imperfect Competition: On The Existence Of Equilibrium, Andrew S. Caplin, Barry Nalebuff

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We present a new approach to the theory of imperfect competition and apply it to study price competition among differentiated products. The central result provides general conditions under which there exists a pure strategy price equilibrium for any number of firms producing any set of products. This includes products with multi-dimensional attributes. In addition to the proof of existence, we provide conditions for uniqueness. Our analysis covers location models, the characteristic approach, and probabilistic choice together in a unified framework. To prove existence, we employ aggregation theorems due to Prekopa (1971) and Borell (1975). Our companion paper [CFDP 938] introduces …

The Weak Case For Conversion Legislation, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

This paper analyzes the feasibility of a so-called "defense conversion" that would transfer defense technology to civilian uses, concluding that such a transfer would be a difficult and undesirable public policy.
