The Altered Mobile Home: A Stationary Image Of Work And Value, Gregory Kendall Jenkins
The Altered Mobile Home: A Stationary Image Of Work And Value, Gregory Kendall Jenkins
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
As the medium cost of conventional housing rises, many people unable to incur such an expense look for alternative forms of adequate housing. In rural areas surrounding Bowling Green, Kentucky, several families have utilized the mobile home as a base to expand, embellish, and personalize, creating a larger more conventional-looking home. Many of these altered homes possess gabled roofs, rock exterior walls, and expansive interior space. Of primary concern is: why have these families undertaken a project of this nature?
As material culture scholars and folklorists examine our built environment, they find relationship between construction and the builders. What can …

Utopia And Bureaucracy: The Fall Of Rajneeshpuram, Oregon, Carl Abbott
Utopia And Bureaucracy: The Fall Of Rajneeshpuram, Oregon, Carl Abbott
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
During 1981-1985, the followers of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh built a large utopian community in eastern Oregon's solitude and named it Rajneeshpuram. While Rajneeshpuram appeared to be physically isolated and removed from government intervention, it was actually embedded in a dense system of laws and bureaucratic regulations, quite within reach of local, state, and national bureaucracies. It was this ability of the local and state regulators to limit the development that was one of the major factors for the sudden collapse of Rajneeshpuram in the fall of 1985. Other contributing factors were the growing disaffection and factionalism within the commune leadership …

The Effects Of Decreased Uncertainty And Telescopic Versus Full Field Training On The Useful Field Of View, Lauren M. Jackson
The Effects Of Decreased Uncertainty And Telescopic Versus Full Field Training On The Useful Field Of View, Lauren M. Jackson
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The “Useful Field of View” (UFOV) is the entire area in which information can be gathered without moving the eyes or head (Ball, Beard, Roenker, Miller & Griggs, 1998). Previous research has demonstrated that the UFOV shrinks with age (Scialfa, Kline & Lyman, 1987; Plude & Doussard-Roosevelt, 1987: Ball et al., 1988). With decrement in the UFOV, everyday activities, such as driving and walking can be limited. If the area in which information is received is smaller, then objects seem to appear suddenly and here is little time to react to them. One example of an everyday activity that would …

A Study Of Values And Managerial Practices, Po-Wen Chuang
A Study Of Values And Managerial Practices, Po-Wen Chuang
Theses
The multinational corporations (MNCs) have been a major contributing factor to the rapid growth of the world economy since World War II. In recent years, multinational corporations are said to facilitate transfer of management techniques, thereby accelerating industrial growth, consumption, and a higher standard of living.
Research on multinational corporations has raised many issues, one of the most interesting issues being the transfer of technology within multinational corporations. Technology includes both the so called "hardware" technology such as capital labor ratio, product design and manufacturing methods, and "software" or managerial technology. Differences in managerial technology used by multinational corporations are …
Australia Day And National Identity, Mark Pearson
Australia Day And National Identity, Mark Pearson
Mark Pearson
This dissertation argues that the scope and substance of the celebration of Australia Day this century can be explained using theories of national identity and invented tradition. It draws upon the columns of capital city newspapers in selected years to gauge how Australians celebrated their national day and what they thought about its significance. The dissertation argues that for most of this century Australia Day failed to make its mark on the national calendar because Australians' perceptions of their nationality were inextricably tied to their feelings of kinship with the British people. Australia Day was identified more with the hedonism …
