[Review Of] Gary Soto. Baseball In April And Other Stories, Carl R. Shirley Jan 1990

[Review Of] Gary Soto. Baseball In April And Other Stories, Carl R. Shirley

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Gary Soto's previous prose collections (Living Up the Street: Narrative Recollections -- 1985, Small Faces -- 1986, and Lesser Evils: Ten Quartets -- 1988) all contained stories about growing up, but this latest book focuses exclusively on the trials and tribulations of children and young teenagers. The eleven sketches in Baseball in April range in subject from broken Barbie dolls to championship marble tournaments, and all reveal a compassionate, understanding insight as well as the deft handiwork of a fine writer. For those who do not understand Spanish, the author has supplied a short appendix with translations of words and …

[Review Of] Jon Michael Spencer. Sacred Symphony: The Chanted Sermon Of The Black Preacher, Angela M. S. Nelson Jan 1990

[Review Of] Jon Michael Spencer. Sacred Symphony: The Chanted Sermon Of The Black Preacher, Angela M. S. Nelson

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

In his latest book to date, Sacred Symphony; The Chanted Sermon of the Black Preacher, Spencer states in the introduction that there are seven musical elements that make up the "chanted sermon" and these include melody, rhythm, call and response, harmony, counterpoint, form, and improvisation. He not only states that these musical components appear in the chanted sermons, but he illustrates how they are manifested in the sermon event through sermons and/or testimonies of white male and female observers, ex-slaves, ministers, and scholars of black preaching.

[Review Of] H. Nigel Thomas. From Folklore To Fiction: A Study Of Folk Heroes And Rituals In The Black American Novel, Harriet Ottenheimer

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

The complex and important relationship between African American folklore and African American literature is the focus of this thoughtful, well-written book. Many African American writers have drawn from folklore, and Thomas sets out to demonstrate--by analyzing specific examples--some of the traditions that have developed in the use of folklore in African American writing.

[Review Of] Sabine R. Ulibarri. El Gobernador Glu Glu Y Otros Cuentos (Governor Glu Glu And Other Stories), Carl R. Shirley

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Sabine R. Ulibarrí is a prolific and engaging story teller whose works portray the people, the landscape, the folklore, and the tenacious yet evolving way of life in Hispanic northern New Mexico. His previous bilingual collections include Tierra Amarilla (published in Spanish in Ecuador in 1964 and in a dual-language edition in New Mexico in 1971), Mi abuela fumaba puros/My Grandma Smoked Cigars (1977), and Primeros Encuentros/First Encounters (1982.) In these collections, Ulibarri's portrait of the people and the history of his region is an intimate, loving, and somewhat nostalgic one. This latest volume continues to explore the same territory …

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

In response to the rising tide of racial incidents on college campuses, the National Association for Ethnic Studies has elected to devote this special issue of Explorations in Ethnic Studies to this topic. Hundreds of institutions of all sizes have experienced these ugly and embarrassing incidents.

The Monster In Our House: Racial Incidents On College Campuses, Farrell J. Webb

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Reports of racial incidents on college campuses have risen dramatically in the past four years. Data from recent surveys indicate that minority students, specifically blacks, will experience some form of discrimination during their academic careers.[1] Recent data from other studies reveal that racial and ethnic violence has occurred on at least 70 U.S. college campuses.[2] Efforts to assert one racial/ethnic group over another have often created social conflicts. These social disagreements may take several forms, usually imitating behavior outside of school: shouting discriminatory remarks or becoming physically aggressive or violent.

Racism On Campus: An Exploratory Analysis Of Black-White Perceptions In The South, Phyllis G. Ray, Adolph Simmons Jr.

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

Racism has been a persistent problem in American society. Sociologists refer to racism as unfair treatment of an individual or a group solely on the basis of race.[1] It may be covert or overt, and it may be expressed on an individual level when a person consciously or unconsciously discriminates against another person. Racism may also be expressed on an institutional level, when rules, policies and practices of organizations and/or institutions discriminate against an individual or a group.[2]

College Students' Attitudes On Neighborhood Integration: From The Classroom To The Community And Back Again, Robin P. Clair, Michael J. Mcgoun

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

I grew up in an all white suburb, well, almost all white. There were two black families that literally lived on the wrong side of the tracks. Two large run-down old houses sat within five feet of the rumbling trains. Sometimes my family drove past those houses in our old station wagon. On days that our drive was interrupted by a crossing train, I would watch the barefoot black children playing by the street. I never thought of our suburb as being segregated, at least not until I was in high school.

Sometime in the pre-dawn hours of July 16, 1979, an earthen dam holding back wastes produced by United Nuclear Corporation's uranium mill parted in Church Rock, New Mexico. From the widening breach poured ninety four million gallons of highly contaminated effluent and 1,100 tons of wet slurry sands.

The Garnaut Report: An Overview, David Lim

Support & Other Units (THEi)

The Gaunaut Report analyses the process of economic change in Northeast Asia and assesses the implication of this on Australia. It is an important report because of what it says, when it is said, and how it is said. Its findings are neither new nor surprising for those who have been studying Northeast Asian economic development and Australia-Asia relations. But they are nevertheless important findings and presented as they are now and in a report to the Prime Minister and the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade by someone who was the former's trusted chief economic adviser and the latter's …

Impact Of Learnfare On Milwaukee County Social Service Clients (1990), John Pawasarat, Lois M. Quinn

ETI Publications

In July, 1987 the State of Wisconsin enacted legislation implementing a “Learnfare” policy for families receiving AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children). As a condition for receiving aid, teenagers who had not completed high school were required to attend school regularly or to be removed from their parents’ (or their own) grant, i.e., “sanctioned.” The waivers granted by the federal government in October, 1987 permitted Wisconsin to impose the Learnfare sanctioning without making a federally legislated assessment of the sanctioned individuals’ “educational, child care, and other supportive service needs ...[or a] review of the family circumstances, which may include …

Myofunctional And Dentofacial Relationships In Second Grade Children., Alan M. Gross, G. D. Kellum, S. T. Hale, Stephen C. Messer, B. A. Benson, S. L. Sisakun, F. W. Bishop

Faculty Articles

One hundred and thirty-three second graders in rural public school were assessed on a number of dental, skeletal, and oral muscle function measures. Correlational analyses were conducted in order to determine whether specific myofunctional variables were associated with dentofacial development. Significant relationships were observed between open mouth posture and a narrow maxillary arch and long facial height. Labial and lingual rest and swallow patterns were also related to poor coordination of lip and tongue movements.

Was The Cypress Cluster One Of The (Many) Victims Of The 1539 - 1543 De Soto Expedition?, J. Peter Thurmond

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In my master's thesis on the archeology of the Cypress creek basin (Thurmond 1981) and a subsequent article in the Bulletin of the Texas Archeological Society, I proposed the identification of a third late prehistoric-protohistoric confederacy for the Caddoan area of northeast Texas, in addition to those of the Hasinai and Kadohadacho. I named the archeological manifestation of this hypothesized sociopolitical entity the Cypress cluster, following a model of late Caddoan sociopolitical organization formulated by Dee Ann Story. The Cypress cluster is centered geographically on the upper Cypress Creek, White Oak Bayou and Lake Fork Creek basins. Two sequential temporal …

The Archaeological Conservancy: Ten Years Of Preservation Success And The New Landowner's Preservation Partnership Program, Bonnie C. Mckee

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Archaeological Conservancy, the only national nonprofit organization dedicated solely to the acquisition of cultural resource sites for preservation and future re search, celebrated ten years of operation in January 1990. Since its founding, the Conservancy has acquired 57 sites in eleven states. In the Caddoan Cultural Area, the Conservancy currently owns four sites (Grobin Davis in Oklahoma [34MC253], and Hale [41TT12], Fasken (41RR14], and Hudnall-Pirtle [41 RK4] in Texas} and holds a conservation easement for Cabe Mounds (41BW14), near Texarkana, Texas.

While the Conservancy's major focus for permanent preservation is the acquisition of sites to hold as archeological preserves, …

An Assessment Of The Fourche Maline Culture And Its Place In The Prehistory Of Northeast Texas, Frank Winchell Jan 1990

An Assessment Of The Fourche Maline Culture And Its Place In The Prehistory Of Northeast Texas, Frank Winchell

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

This paper is based on the works of many authors who have investigated and written upon archaeological materials involving pre-Caddo cultures that existed in the Caddo Area, west of the Mississippi River. I will be concentrating on one particular archaeological manifestation known as the Fourche Maline Culture, which existed perhaps as early as 500 B.C. and ended sometime during the 2nd millenium A.D.

The origins of the Fourche Maline Culture are still not well understood, however, it can be stated with some assurance that it was an in-place development occurring somewhere within the Caddo Area. How far widespread was this …

The "Northern Caddoan Area" Was Not Caddoan, Frank F. Schambach Jan 1990

The "Northern Caddoan Area" Was Not Caddoan, Frank F. Schambach

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In this paper I will challenge one of the major unexamined assumptions in the archeology of Eastern North America, the assumption that the Arkansas River Valley and Ozark Highland regions of eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas, the so-called northern Caddoan Area, was the home of Caddo people who were closely related culturally and linguistically to the Caddo people of southwest Arkansas, northwest Louisiana, east Texas, and southeast Oklahoma. I will propose, instead, that the archeology of this locality is much more complex and interesting than the conventional wisdom would have it. What is involved here, I suggest, is not one …

Phase Ii Historical Investigations At Justiceburg Reservoir, Garza And Kent Counties, Texas, Martha Doty Freeman, Douglas K. Boyd

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Phase II cultural resources investigations at the proposed Justiceburg Reservoir in Garza and Kent counties, Texas, conducted in 1988-1989 included work at four historic sites, the recording of a previously unrecorded historic site, and development of two National Register contexts. This report documents the archeological work at the sites and presents data that resulted from in-depth research concerning the history of the use and development of these sites. In addition, the report presents two historic contexts which were developed in order to provide tools for the assessment of sites within the project area and, at the same time, to present …

Prehistoric Archeology And Paleoenvironments In Hidalgo And Willacy Counties, South Texas: Results Of The Phase Ii Test Excavations, C. Britt Bousman, Steve A. Tomka, Gail L. Bailey

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In May 1989 through July 1989, archeological and geomorphological investigations were conducted at five prehistoric archeological sites impacted by drainage ditch construction in Hidalgo and Willacy counties. These investigations were sponsored by Hidalgo County Drainage District No. I and Willacy County Drainage District No. I as part of a continuing program of cultural resources studies along the drainage ditch construction right-of-way. One site, 41WYI40, is situated on a low rise adjacent to a main channel of the ditch and lacks sufficient Holocene sediments to contain archeological materials in good context. However, a tortoise, cf. Gopherus hexagollarus, was recovered, and the …
