Domestic Violence: Physicians A Link To Prevention, Mary Guinan
Domestic Violence: Physicians A Link To Prevention, Mary Guinan
Public Health Faculty Publications
Domestic violence may result in more injuries and fatalities for women than automobile crashes, muggings, and rapes combined, but according to a recent editorial, physicians largely ignore the problem. Evidence showed that a majority of women treated at an emergency facility for injuries resulting from violent acts of spouses or other persons known to the victims were discharged without any arrangement being made for their future safety. Physicians rarely inquired about an injury victim's past sexual or physical abuse, living arrangements, or future prospects of safety.
[Review Of] Marion Wilson Starling. The Slave Narrative: Its Place In American History, Angelo Costanzo
[Review Of] Marion Wilson Starling. The Slave Narrative: Its Place In American History, Angelo Costanzo
Explorations in Sights and Sounds
This is another reprint of Marion Wilson Starling's breakthrough study of the slave narrative, which she undertook for her Ph.D. dissertation at New York University in 1946 under the advisorship of Oscar Cargill. During the 1960s and 1970s when slave autobiography became a serious critical endeavor, many scholars referred to Starling's thorough historical and literary research; however, her dissertation was not published until 1981. Then, Starling's work became more readily available, and now the paperback edition allows this well-deserved book to reach a wider audience.
Symbolic And Competitive Racism On Campus, Monica L. Jackson
Symbolic And Competitive Racism On Campus, Monica L. Jackson
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
After a short hiatus, overt racism is on the rise again. Increases in reported racially motivated crime and violence have been noted all over the country. In the wider U.S. society, identifiable racial incidents have been estimated to have increased 55 percent from 1986 to 1987. According to the Community Relations Service (CRS), African Americans comprised two-thirds of the victims in the cases reported in 1987. Although this racial violence has taken various forms ranging from name-calling, vandalism, and cross-burning to actual physical assaults that result in casualties and death, these have not been isolated incidents but have their basis …

Critique [Of "What Shall I Give My Children?" The Role Of The Mentor In Gloria Naylor's The Women Of Brewster Place And Paule Marshall's Praisesong For The Widow By Linda Wells], Sandra E. Bowen
Explorations in Ethnic Studies
In her discussion of Mattie Michael and Avey Johnson as mentors in Gloria Naylor's The Women of Brewster Place and Paule Marshall's Praisesong for the Widow, Wells uses as a focal point Gwendolyn Brooks's poem "What Shall I Give My Children?" It is a socially and politically institutionalized assignment that becomes cosmic when experienced by African American women. Joanne M. Braxton expresses it: "As Black American women, we are born into a mystic sisterhood, and we live our lives within a magic circle, a realm of shared language, reference, and allusion within the veil of our blackness and our femaleness …

Remembering With And Without Awareness In A Depressed Mood: Evidence Of Deficits In Initiative, Paula T. Hertel, T. S. Hardin
Remembering With And Without Awareness In A Depressed Mood: Evidence Of Deficits In Initiative, Paula T. Hertel, T. S. Hardin
Psychology Faculty Research
We propose that depressive deficits in remembering are revealed in tasks that allow the spontaneous use of strategies; tasks that bypass or direct the use of strategies should not produce depressive deficits. College students received depressive- or neutral-mood inductions after answering questions worded to reflect homophones' less common meaning. After the inductions, subjects spelled old and new homophones and showed no effect of the depressive inductions on unaware memory for the old homophones. Subsequent tests of recognition did, however, reveal differences according to the induced moodor the presence of naturally occurring depression (in Experiment 3). The differences, evidence of nondepressed …
Hospice: A Descriptive Analysis Of The Structure And Formation Of Hospice Organization In West Virginia, Rebecca Ann Lowery
Hospice: A Descriptive Analysis Of The Structure And Formation Of Hospice Organization In West Virginia, Rebecca Ann Lowery
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
It has been recognized that a hospice must move through several stages in order to become an organization. Moving from a volunteer or interest group to an operating hospice requires detailed planning and organizing. Also, community support and financial stability are crucial in the developing stages. The developing hospice also needs support from the medical community, because physicians make most of the patient referrals to the hospice program.
Several reasons may be given to explain why the Hospice of Lincoln County was unsuccessful in developing into an operating organization. First, the board of directors for this developing hospice were the …
