"Moving Up" On Campus : A Qualitative Examination Of Organizational Socialization, Betsy Wackernagel Bach
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
The primary goal of this study is to describe the cultural meaning of one organization by assessing the rules, norms, and values of the organization as manifested in the socialization of its members. A single case will be presented and used as a basis for generating insight into the general process of socialization of which this case is an instance.
Beyond Writing: A Case For A Speech-Based Basic Course In A Vid-Oral World, W. Lance Haynes
Beyond Writing: A Case For A Speech-Based Basic Course In A Vid-Oral World, W. Lance Haynes
Basic Communication Course Annual
Recent developments in media studies research suggest ways basic course curricula may be inappropriately biased toward written mediation and the forms of cognition writing engenders. This paper explores the media-cognition relationship to argue for teaching oral communication from a different perspective.
First, the concept of "ways of thinking" reveals some ways media inherently affect communication. Then parallels between the new "vid-oral" media and the pre-literate oralist tradition suggest foundations for a speech-based basic course.
Strategies For Increasing Contraceptive Use In Factories In Barbados, Charles Alleyne, Elrene Sealy, Pauline Russell-Brown
Strategies For Increasing Contraceptive Use In Factories In Barbados, Charles Alleyne, Elrene Sealy, Pauline Russell-Brown
Reproductive Health
This report outlines results of a study on factory-based family planning operations. The 18-month study compared the relative effectiveness of two interventions: 1) ongoing contraceptive distribution by a trained factory employee supported by monthly education visits by the Barbados Family Planning Association (BFPA); and 2) monthly service and education visits by the BFPA. Service and survey data indicated that the education/information program component was stronger than the contraceptive delivery component. There were remarkable increases in the employees' knowledge of contraceptive methods, especially in factories with employee distributors.
La Conservation Des Forêts Au Népal: Encourager La Participation Des Femmes, Augusta Molnar
La Conservation Des Forêts Au Népal: Encourager La Participation Des Femmes, Augusta Molnar
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
The Multifunction Polis: A Catalyst For Change In The 21st Century, Laurie Stevenson, Barbara Lepani
The Multifunction Polis: A Catalyst For Change In The 21st Century, Laurie Stevenson, Barbara Lepani
Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers
The proposal to establish a Multifunction Polis in Australia emerged at a time when Australia was confronting a number of challenges. The challenges were a result of four inter-related macro factors - globalisation, internationalisation, technological change and an expanding Asian consumer market. This report examined potential roles of the finance sector and also the Australian Bank Employees' Union in participating in, and contributing to, the development of the Multifunction Polis initiative.

Evaluation Of Dna Probes For Detection Of Shiga-Like-Toxin- Producing Escherichia Coli In Food And Calf Fecal Samples, Mansour Samadpour, John Liston, Jerry E. Ongerth, Phillip I. Tarr
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
The use of DNA probes for Shiga-like toxin I (SLT-I) and SLT-II for detection of SLT-producing Escherichia coli (SLTEC) in foods and calf fecal samples was evaluated. Enrichment cultures were prepared from food or fecal samples. Colonies formed by plating of enrichment cultures were probed for SLTEC by colony hybridization. Alternatively, enrichment cultures were analyzed for SLTEC presence by dot blot. The lowest detected concentration of SLTEC in sample homogenates inoculated with E. coli 0157:H7 corresponded to 1.3 CFU/g of sample. Of the 44 food samples and 28 fecal samples from dairy calves tested by the colony hybridization method, 4 …

Identification Of Giardia Lamblia-Specific Antigens In Infected Human And Gerbil Feces By Western Immunoblotting, Henry H. Stibbs, Mansour Samadpour, Jerry E. Ongerth
Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A
Western immunoblot analysis of aqueous extracts of feces obtained from five giardiasis patients and from experimentally infected gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) with rabbit antiserum to Giardia lamblia cysts has revealed antigens of three molecular weight groups. A stepladderlike, evenly-spaced set of strongly reactive antigens (darkest at a molecular weight [m.w.] of 55,000 to 70,000) appeared in the gerbil feces from day 4 (first experiment) or day 2 (second experiment) and lasted to about day 7 but disappeared completely by day 8 and did not reappear later. These antigenic bands were seen in gerbils infected with two isolates of G. lamblia. These …
