A Comparison Of Locus Of Control Between High School Athletes Who Experienced Burnout And Those Who Did Not, Mary Elizabeth Smith Griffin Jan 1990

A Comparison Of Locus Of Control Between High School Athletes Who Experienced Burnout And Those Who Did Not, Mary Elizabeth Smith Griffin

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to compare the locus of control between those individuals who indicated they had terminated their high school athletic participation because of burnout and those who did not. It was hypothesized that athletes who dropped out of sport due to burnout would have a higher external locus of control (individuals who perceive that outside factors control their lives) as compared to those who did not. Students (N = 189) who were enrolled in required wellness classes at the University of Northern Iowa served as the subjects for this study. Based on data collected from a …

The Unified Speech Period Of A Bilingual Child, Gary Frank Wood Jan 1990

The Unified Speech Period Of A Bilingual Child, Gary Frank Wood

Dissertations and Theses

Previous studies of bilingual infants learning their languages simultaneously have suggested that such children go through what is known as a unified speech period in which they make no differentation between the languages in question and in which they frequently use mixed utterances (Arnberg, 1987; Grosjen, 1982; Leopold, 1939; & Skutnabb-Kangas, 1981). To test the validity of the claim that there is such a period, an English-Japanese bilingual child from one year and six months of age (1;6) through two years and six months of age (2;6) was observed and his speech recorded.

The "New Age Movement": A Case Study, Zachary Grant Goodell Jan 1990

The "New Age Movement": A Case Study, Zachary Grant Goodell

Theses and Dissertations

Within the last two decades, the United States has witnessed the growth of a phenomenon which the media has referred to as "The New Age Movement". This multi-faceted social pattern includes astrology, meditation, mysticism, and eastern philosophies, the popularity of which have increased significantly in the 1980's. This thesis is a case study of the "New Age Movement". First, I develop a descriptive model of the key ideological themes and organizational structures of this social pattern. Subsequently, I organize this model in terms of several sociologically based theoretical frameworks including activity fads, social movements, and sociocultural shifts, in order to …

Expression Of An Expectation Of A Future Desire To Move By Older Community-Dwelling Adults, Brenda K. Goodman Jan 1990

Expression Of An Expectation Of A Future Desire To Move By Older Community-Dwelling Adults, Brenda K. Goodman

Theses and Dissertations

Empirical evidence in the gerontological literature supports the commonly held belief that older adults, overwhelmingly, prefer to remain in their own homes. Despite this fact, older adults residing in the community often express an expectation that they will move in the future.

There is a paucity of empirical findings on those factors which are most influential on the expression of an expectation of a future desire to move. Logistic regression was used to analyze data from the third wave of a longitudinal study of elderly Massachusetts residents residing in the community to identify possible antecedents to the expression of an …

Longitudinal Study Of Diagnoses In Children Of Women With Unipolar And Bipolar Affective Disorder, Constance Hammen, Dorli Burge, Elizabeth Burney Hamilton, Cheri Adrian Jan 1990

Longitudinal Study Of Diagnoses In Children Of Women With Unipolar And Bipolar Affective Disorder, Constance Hammen, Dorli Burge, Elizabeth Burney Hamilton, Cheri Adrian

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

School-age children of unipolar depressed, bipolar, chronically medically ill, or normal women were diagnosed every 6 months for up to 3 years. Offspring of unipolar women had the highest rates of disorder at all evaluations, but children of bipolar and medically ill mothers also experienced significant rates of disorder. Observing diagnoses from both past lifetime and prospective follow-up assessments, it appeared that most children who had diagnoses had onsets in preadolescence and continued a chronic or intermittent course of disorder. Thus, risk to offspring of ill mothers is not transitory and indicates a pernicious course that commonly includes affective disorders …

Back To Work: Testing Reemployment Services For Displaced Workers, Howard S. Bloom

Upjohn Press

Bloom presents findings from the Texas Worker Adjustment Demonstration, a 2,192-person randomized experimental evaluation of reemployment programs for displaced workers conducted at three sites in Texas. This project demonstrated that a relatively inexpensive mix of job-search assistance and limited occupational skills training can be a cost-effective means of assisting displaced workers.
