Production, Consumption, And Consciousness, Warren Sprouse
Honors Papers
To begin with disclaimers: the discussion which follows is not a `treatise’ on education in any sense of the term. Nor is it intended as a programme for educational reform, per se. Disciplines far more qualified for that task than political theory must assume it, to assure a proper treatment of such an immensely important undertaking. Rather, the present effort is more than anything an attempt to bring two of the most significant Marxist writers of our century (namely Antonio Gramsci and Louis Althusser) into closer proximity to one another. Something of a justification of this approach is necessary to …

Predicting Adolescent Cognitive And Self-Regulatory Competencies From Preschool Delay Of Gratification: Identifying Diagnostic Conditions, Yuichi Shoda, Walter Mischel, Philip K. Peake
Predicting Adolescent Cognitive And Self-Regulatory Competencies From Preschool Delay Of Gratification: Identifying Diagnostic Conditions, Yuichi Shoda, Walter Mischel, Philip K. Peake
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Variations of the self-imposed delay-of-gratification situation in preschool were compared to determine when individual differences in this situation may predict aspects of cognitive and self-regulatory competence and coping in adolescence. Preschool children from a university community participated in experiments that varied features of the self-imposed delay situation. Experimental analyses of the cognitive-attentional processes that affect waiting in this situation helped identify conditions in which delay behavior would be most likely to reflect relevant cognitive and attentional competencies. As hypothesized, in those conditions, coherent patterns of statistically significant correlations were found between seconds of delay time in such conditions in preschool …

Adolescent Identity Formation: Inpatient Influence On Self-Concept, David John Mueller
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This study investigated the effects of psychiatric hospitalization on the self-concepts of 44 adolescents. Labeling theory suggests that the stigma of being labeled as a patient in a mental hospital will hurt an adolescent's self-concept. The sample for this study consisted of 44 adolescent acute care patients in a private psychiatric hospital in Norfolk, Virginia. their length of stay averaged 20.1 days and ranged from 8 to 38 days in the hospital. Each was diagnosed by an accredited psychiatrist or a licensed psychologist as having symptoms of depression or dysthymic disorder. Each subject was administered a semantic differential instrument (Burke …

Interactional Characteristics Of Facial Pain Patients And Their Spouses: Assessment Of Self-Report And Behavioral Observation Measures Of Cohesion, Adaptability, And Marital Satisfaction, Pamela Guyler Boll
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Twenty-four facial pain patients and their spouses were videotaped answering questions concerning their relationships. This study was designed to more objectively support the clinical impressions of the MCV/VCU TMJ and Facial Pain Research Center's treatment team's view of the interactional characteristics of these couples. Prior to the team offering brief couples psychotherapy for assistance in the resolution of the pain problem, the team needed to assess the pain couples' relationship variables. Adherence to health care providers' recommendations is typically minimal unless all participants agree that specific treatment is warranted. There appears to be a lack of understanding among patients, their …

The Parent Checklist For New Kindergarten Pupils: A Validation Study, Willis Glen Miller Jr.
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
State and federal guidelines for implementing programs for the gifted have required that placement into such programs being as early as kindergarten. In order to help determine whether a child was functioning significantly above age level on certain tasks through multiple sources, a checklist for parents was developed and validated.;The parent checklist was analyzed for reliability and validity. Analysis of pre-school scores on the instrument was also conducted to determine whether or not placement into programs for the gifted could be predicted from the results. Parental responses were also investigated in an effort to determine the reliability of parents as …

The Relationship Of Interpersonal Problem-Solving Skills To Adjustment, James Alan Russo
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This experimental study examined the effects of different methods of training and verbal cognitive ability on second-grader's acquisition of social problem-solving skills and teacher-rated behavioral adjustment. Subjects were assigned by classroom to either classroom training only, classroom training with parent training, classroom training without parent training (those parents who were offered training but did not participate) or control. The 25-lesson Rochester Social Problem-Solving curriculum was taught three times per week for nine weeks by classroom teachers and a four session parent training component was taught by mental health prevention staff members and this researcher. Consistent with previous research, classroom instruction …

Therapeutic Intervention In The Treatment Of Substance Abuser's Unresolved Grief Reactions In An Inpatient Hospital Setting: A Study Of Two Group Approaches, Alan Wayne Forrest
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of two group counseling approaches upon adult substance abuser's unresolved grief reactions in an inpatient hospital setting. Forty-one adult patients hospitalized in an inpatient substance abuse treatment program were subjects in the study. All subjects were volunteers and assigned to either a higher level inpatient therapy group (Yalom model), structured didactic group, or control group. Pre and posttesting was accomplished by use of the Texas Revised Inventory of Grief, Beck Depression Inventory, and Adjective Check List. It was hypothesized that by virtue of a grief counseling group there would be …
Stress And Social Support Of Parents With An Adult Mentally Retarded Child, Nancy Patricia Kropf
Stress And Social Support Of Parents With An Adult Mentally Retarded Child, Nancy Patricia Kropf
Theses and Dissertations
Parent-child caregiving is the most basic caregiving situation. However, parents who continue to provide care to an adult mentally retarded child have been an unexamined group of caregivers. This study compared stress levels and social support constellations among these caregivers and two other groups of parents.
The study tested two major hypotheses. Parents who were caregivers for an adult child with mental retardation were predicted to report higher stress levels and smaller social support constellations than the other groups. Two comparison groups were included in the study. One group was parents of an mentally retarded child who did not live …

The results were assessed in reference to their implications for family therapy.;The sample utilized in this study was 97 sets of mother-father dyads who sought psychiatric intervention for their child at local mental health clinics. The mother-father pairs in these intact families completed a demographic questionnaire and the Peterson-Quay Revised Behavior Checklist. The data were analyzed using frequency analysis, t-tests, and multiple regression analysis.;This research indicates that there are significant differences between parents' perceptions of their …
The Effect Of Different Approaches To Goal Setting On Goal Commitment, Eileen Mary Piersa
The Effect Of Different Approaches To Goal Setting On Goal Commitment, Eileen Mary Piersa
All Master's Theses
This study assesses the goal commitment generated by different approaches to goal setting. The participants were the directors, board presidents, staff, board members and volunteers of two non-profit organizations. One group explored their history as an organization, significant events and the impact of those events before carrying out the same goal setting process as the other group. Self-efficacy was measured before the exercise began. Goal commitment was measured after participants prioritized goals and selected subgoals on which to take action. The hypothesis that cognitively reviewing past history would lead to greater commitment was rejected. A second hypothesis that the self-efficacy …
