The purpose of this report is to offer a synopsis of what occurred during the 1989-1990 school year in Western's fraternity system. This report contains information on the Interfraternity Council, programming, membership, philanthropy, and academics. This, in turn, will point out those strengths and weaknesses in Western's fraternity system as well as to suggest ways to improve the system.

This report examines the Multi-Family Recycling Program sponsored by the City of Beaverton and operated by Portland State University's Recycling Education Project (REP). The program operated from July 1, 1989 to June 30, 1990. The purpose of the program was to implement a pilot recycling program that addressed the unique needs of apartment and condominium dwellers. The effort involved establishing 30 recycling systems in multi-family buildings. The program used a multi-materials approach that included separating newspaper, clear, green, and brown glass, tin, aluminum, and cardboard.

Ethical Dilemmas Confronting School Psychologists, Karol Basel

This study was conducted to investigate school psychologists' perception of the utility to published ethics codes on ethical decision making. Subjects were randomly chosen for this national survey based on their membership in the National Association of School Psychologists. Subjects were presented 25 dilemmas based on specific ethical codes published by the American Psychological Association and National Association of School Psychologists. Respondents were asked whether they had encountered similar dilemmas in the past two years and how well ethical codes had prepared them to solve each dilemma. The question, "Does the message of the Blacksburg Manifesto fit the times that we are in now and the times that seem to be shaping up in the next decade or longer?" is addressed by epistemologically locating the Blacksburg Manifesto and by introducing the postmodern debate to the field of public administration. The well-known Blacksburg Manifesto is described as an example of high modernism, beyond the functionalist paradigm, because although the central commitment is to reason and progress, the classic forms of administrative rationality are surpassed. Stress has become a problem to which people of all walks of life may relate, affecting the actions of the individual on both professional and personal levels. In the field of education, administrators often report a high level of stress, sometimes referred to as burnout. Much has been written about teacher stress, but very little research has been done on stress encountered by elementary principals. Research was conducted on stress as perceived by elementary principals in the Commonwealth of Kentucky for this study.

The Effectiveness Of Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy (Rest) On Reducing Chronic Low Back Pain, David D. Smith

Dissertations

A number of studies have demonstrated that both progressive relaxation training and biofeedback are effective in reducing chronic low back pain. Floatation-REST (restricted environmental stimulation therapy), a relatively new method developed for relaxation, has demonstrated promising results and appears to be particularly well suited for the low back pain patient. The primary hypothesis of this project was that REST would reduce pain as evidenced by changes in physiological, behavioral and self-report measures commonly associated with chronic pain reduction. A secondary hypothesis was generated after the first of three experiments: that employment would be an important variable in determining the effectiveness …

The Relationship Between Private And Commercial Vehicle Driver Records And Accidents In Michigan, Robert E. Maki

The primary objective of this study was to determine whether previous accidents and citations are reliable predictors of future tractor-trailer heavy truck accidents in Michigan. In addition, the background material on accident trends shows how heavy truck safety policy was formed at the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Historically, accident prediction models have been able to explain only small portions of the accident experience. More recent studies have tended to show that previous citation and accident experience were good predictors of commercial vehicle accidents. Most studies have suffered from an admitted lack of exposure data and incomplete accident statistics.
