Pricing In The Hospitality Industry: An Implicit Markets Approach, William E. Herrin, Steven A. Carvell Oct 1990

Pricing In The Hospitality Industry: An Implicit Markets Approach, William E. Herrin, Steven A. Carvell

School of International Studies Faculty Articles

The authors apply economic theory to an analysis of industry pricing. Data from a cross-section of San Francisco hotels is used to estimate the implicit prices of common hotel amenities, and a procedure for using these prices to estimate consumer demands for the attributes is outlined. The authors then suggest implications for hotel decision makers. While the results presented here should not be generalized to other markets, the methodology is easily adapted to other geographic areas.

Debt Crisis In The West African Sub-Region: Which Way Out?, M A. Uduebo Oct 1990

Debt Crisis In The West African Sub-Region: Which Way Out?, M A. Uduebo

Bullion

The resolution of the debt problem has continued to engage the attention of the international community. In reaction to the problem, many debtor countries have adopted structural adjustment programmes and various proposals have been espoused and, in some cases, implemented. Nevertheless, the debt crisis is far from being resolved. It is now patently clear that a more realistic solution to the problem is needed in the 1990s to break the debt trap. This forum graced by eminent bankers, offers another opportunity to re-examine the salient issues and proffer new ideas and suggestions on how best to address the situation. The …

Social Background And Bureaucratic Behavior In Egypt, Earl L. Sullivan, El Sayed Yassin, Ali Leila, Monte Palmer Oct 1990

Social Background And Bureaucratic Behavior In Egypt, Earl L. Sullivan, El Sayed Yassin, Ali Leila, Monte Palmer

Faculty Books

This study of the role of gender and religion in the Egyptian bureaucracy provides general background information pertaining to the three major topics of this book: bureaucratic behaviour, the role of women in Egyptian society and relations between Egypt's religious groups, the Muslims and the Copts. The author hypothesizes that the attitudes and behaviour of Egyptian bureaucrats will differ markedly on the basis of sex, but that the attitudes and behaviour of Coptic bureaucrats will not differ significantly from those of their Muslim counterparts. The two hypotheses were tested in reference to eight sets of attitudes and behaviour, viz. media …

Free Bank Failures In New York And Wisconsin: A Portfolio Analysis, Andrew J. Economopoulos Oct 1990

Free Bank Failures In New York And Wisconsin: A Portfolio Analysis, Andrew J. Economopoulos

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

Rolnick and Weber found that a sharp decline in asset prices led to bank panics and, ultimately, bank failures during the free banking era. An examination of New York and Wisconsin free bank portfolios prior to a fall in asset prices indicates banks that weathered the turmoil held significantly different portfolios than closed banks. In general, solvent banks held more loans and specie, and issued more deposits and less bank notes than closed banks.
