Using The Community Information Format To Create Public Service Resource Network, Marilyn Lutz, Sharon Quinn Fitzgerald, Thomas Zantow Dec 1992

Using The Community Information Format To Create Public Service Resource Network, Marilyn Lutz, Sharon Quinn Fitzgerald, Thomas Zantow

Library Staff Publications

The University of Maine public service resource network is a database that identifies faculty members who consult in their areas of expertise. The network was developed using the USMARC Community Information Format. A persistent problem in developing a workable interface between university resources and community needs, until recently, has been the issue of access, and the barriers that flow from isolation and unfamiliarity. Electronic information technologies are breaking down these barriers and have emerged as the mechanism for networking academic expertise within the university itself and linking that expertise with society at large.

The Role Of Central Banks In Capital Market Development: The Nigerian Experience., Alhaji A. Ahmed

Bullion

Central banks, especially in Third World countries, play a major role in the growth and development process. Although the structures, functions and powers of central bank vary from country to country, depending on the economic, political, social and other environmental realities prevailing in society, the primary role of any central bank is the promotion of monetary stability and a sound financial system. In performing this role, a central bank necessarily undertakes some functions which include the issue of legal tender currency, maintenance of the value of the national currency, enhancement of funds mobilization, facilitation of competitive efficiency among banks and …

The Role Of Regulatory Bodies In Capital Market Development: The Nigerian Experience., George Akamiokhor Dec 1992

The Role Of Regulatory Bodies In Capital Market Development: The Nigerian Experience., George Akamiokhor

Bullion

This paper examined the need for capital market regulation which is motivated by the desire to protect the investing public from malpractices, instil confidence in the system and ensure financial market and economic stability which are pivotal to economic growth and development. History has shown that inadequate or absence of regulation is detrimental to the capital market as it encourages sharp practices by participants. Regulatory agencies are therefore necessary to police activities in the market with the aim of preventing or minimizing abuses which might mar investors’ confidence, the market's integrity and stability. As financial markets get liberalized, market participants …

Access To Credit: The Case For Rural Women., E. B. I. Oladunni

Bullion

The alleviation of poverty has generally been the cornerstone of economic policy in Nigeria. Past policies have been pursued with the sole objective of improving the living standards of the people through enhanced income and generation of employment opportunities. Despite all machineries put in place, most of the women folk have not benefited because of some endemic socio-cultural problems affecting the women. This paper highlights the need for credit, conditions for attracting credit especially for rural women and the policies that can provide the right atmosphere for access to credit by rural women for sustainable development.

A preference-testing apparatus was designed to provide sows with continuous access to three farrowing crates of different widths. The crates radiated from a central hub area sufficiently large for sows to enter or leave any crate freely. In exp. 1, nine sows were offered crates of 450-, 600- and 750-mm width at standing height. In exp. 2, 12 sows were offered widths of 450, 750 and 1200 mm, the largest being of sufficient width for the sow to turn around. Video recording was used to determine sow position from 3 d before to 6 d after farrowing. In exp. 1, …

Underlying Values And Beliefs "Modern Science" Versus "Sustainable Development", Donald Taylor Dec 1992

Underlying Values And Beliefs "Modern Science" Versus "Sustainable Development", Donald Taylor

Economics Staff Paper Series

This article focuses on personal values and beliefs that critically underlie the "sustainable development" controversy and on the implications of those values and beliefs to personal and professional decision-making. The issues are presented through two contrasting paradigms: a "modern scientific worldview" (MSW) and a "sustainable development worldview" (SDW). MSW is intended to characterize the perspectives of most current-day academics, development practitioners, businessmen, and everyday citizens. SDW characterizes those disenchanted with MSW. Their disenchantment arises from concerns over possible adverse long-term implications of decisions arising from MSW which tend to be dominated by relatively immediate, narrowly based, and self-interested considerations. The …

Women And Homelessness: Evidence Of Need To Look Beyond Shelters To Long Term Social Service Assistance And Permanent Housing, Elizabeth Huttman, Sonjia Redmond

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Based on two surveys of staff in 25 homeless shelters in the San Francisco Bay area, this study focuses on services to homeless women and their children. Both the advantages and disadvantages of shelter living are discussed, as well as obstacles to moving homeless women and their children into permanent housing. The survey finds that there is a need for rapid movement out of the shelters and a concomitant need for long term social services.

Northeast Folklore Society Newsletter, Vol. 35, Northeast Archives Of Folklore And Oral History

Northeast Folklore Society Newsletter

When we brought out Tom Tilton: Coaster and Fisherman back in 1984 (actually it was Northeast Folklore -XXIII: 1982) we included a story about a Captain Pinhead on page 62, just the way Tom told it to Gale Huntington. The book hadn't been out long before I got a smoklngly angry letter from one Robert O. Walsh saying he was Captain Pinhead and that story was all wrong and he wanted us to do something to set the record straight. The only thing I could think of was to suggest he write up what really happened and we'd publish it …

Homeless In Philadelphia: A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of State Welfare Reform On Individuals, Anthony Halter Dec 1992

Homeless In Philadelphia: A Qualitative Study Of The Impact Of State Welfare Reform On Individuals, Anthony Halter

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Although homelessness is not a new problem, the faces of the homeless are changing. For many, the term "homeless person" conjures up the image of a skid row alcoholic. However, the homeless now include unskilled middle-aged males, the chronically mentally ill, and families (Chaiklin, 1985). The reasons for the amplification of homelessness include unemployment, insufficient low-cost housing, alcohol and/or drug addiction, mental health deinstitutionalization and the inadequacy of community-based services. In addition, advocates for the homeless including Mitch Snyder (1986) and Jan Hagen (1986) have argued that federal and state welfare policy changes have served to shift potentially at-risk populations …

16pf Traits And Work Performance Among Restaurant Workers, Stephen J. Guastello, Lenore Frigo Dec 1992

16pf Traits And Work Performance Among Restaurant Workers, Stephen J. Guastello, Lenore Frigo

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Personality traits have been linked to work performance in a variety of jobs. For as many restaurants as there are in every major city, little is known about the traits that characterize the success of their personnel. Personality traits are thought to be especially relevant to restaurant work because, in the case of the wait staff, interaction with the public is a major part of the job. In the case of the kitchen staff, it is necessary to work under conditions of heat and work load stress, while at the same time make each meal turn out exactly the way …

16pf Personality Profiles For Social Workers: Form A/Form S Comparisons, Stephen J. Guastello

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

The goal of this report was to identify the distinguishing features of 16PF personality profiles for social workers that have been collected with Experimental Form S (prototype of Fifth Edition 16PF Questionnaire). In the analysis, the new profile was compared against known profiles for social workers reported in Cattell et al. (1970). Gender differences in personality scores for these groups were noted. The relevance of the 16PF Empathy composite was discussed.
