An Evaluation Of Student Perceptions Of Academic Advising In A Rn/Bsn Distance Educational Nursing Program, Barbara A. Trent Edd
An Evaluation Of Student Perceptions Of Academic Advising In A Rn/Bsn Distance Educational Nursing Program, Barbara A. Trent Edd
Dissertations
Over the past decade, RN/BSN programs have gained popularity across the nation with an emphasis upon structural flexibility and/or adult student learning principles. Research has shown a positive association between advisement and decreased attrition rates for this unique student body. The purpose of this research was to determine from the perception of students enrolled in a RN/BSN educational program, the importance of advisement in relation to three elements: functions, outcomes and advisor style. It was also the purpose to determine if these three elements had either been provided, achieved or employed, respectively, by their advisors. An evaluative design was used …
The Relationships Between Metacognitive Strategies And Learning Outcomes In An Adult Basic Skills Program, Bert Huggins
The Relationships Between Metacognitive Strategies And Learning Outcomes In An Adult Basic Skills Program, Bert Huggins
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
This study tested metacognitive strategies accounted for variance in learning acquisition and retention in an adult basic skills population. The study employed the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) to measure metacognitive strategy use, a standardized, individually-accessed basic skills curriculum, and a valid basic skills performance measurement.
The study population was young adult soldiers stationed in South Carolina, California and Hawaii. Sites selection assured uniformity in testing procedures, curriculum and delivery. Multiple sites assured a variety of soldier career fields for purposes of generalization.
Performance measurements were taken at the beginning of instruction, at the end of instruction and a …
Kidwatching Going Beyond The Language Of The Test, Abha Gupta
Kidwatching Going Beyond The Language Of The Test, Abha Gupta
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
A study examined the linguistic forms in the discourse of speakers during a language test to indicate why they use certain specific forms over others. Ten children were given the Grammatical Analysis of Elicited Language--Simple Sentence Level Test (GAEL), a language proficiency test for hearing-impaired children in the age group of 4 to 8 years. Three students were videotaped during administration of the test, and the other students' final responses (omitting the intermediate discourse) were recorded. Some of the test items on which the maximum number of children deviated from the target response were analyzed for common traits and classified …
Role Of Imitation In Language Assessment Tests, Abha Gupta
Role Of Imitation In Language Assessment Tests, Abha Gupta
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
A study investigated whether imitation plays a significant role in the acquisition of grammar. Three 6- to 8-year-old hearing-impaired children were administered the Grammatical Analysis of Elicited Language--Simple Sentence Level Test (GAEL), which is designed to evaluate hearing-impaired children's use of grammatical aspects of spoken and/or signed English. Subjects' verbal responses to the "imitated" component (in which subjects were asked to say just what the tester said) of the GAEL were transcribed and analyzed. Results indicated that imitated speech is neither longer nor grammatically more advanced than non-imitated, spontaneous speech. Findings suggest that the children produced "unique" language structures to …

An Economic Perspective On Environmental Regulation, A. Myrick Freeman Iii
An Economic Perspective On Environmental Regulation, A. Myrick Freeman Iii
Maine Policy Review
The laws and regulations that govern the use of environmental resources have complicated effects on our society and our economy. Efforts to regulate environmental impacts are frequently controversial precisely because they have such complicated effects. No single perspective can adequately encompass all of the issues that arise in environmental regulation and environmental protection. Even the terms themselves suggest the fundamentally opposed philosophies that approach the assessment of environmental laws: While proponents of greater environmental activism emphasize the need to "protect" the environment, critics of more stringent controls emphasize that these laws "regulate" and limit the actions of individuals. At the …

Assessing Public Participation In Maine: The Old And The New In Civic Involvement, David D. Platt
Assessing Public Participation In Maine: The Old And The New In Civic Involvement, David D. Platt
Maine Policy Review
Lack of citizen participation in American government is a complaint frequently voiced by politicians, political scientists and media commentators. The steady decline in voting, the rising number of Americans who say they are disaffected with their government, and the increase in two-earner households all have been cited as evidence of this decreased involvement by Americans in public life. Maine, with its long tradition of participatory democracy, reflected in town meeting government at the local level, is not necessarily a microcosm of what is occurring nationally. The state has, however, experienced its share of some of the civic maladies note nationally, …
A Business Perspective On Education: Launching A Revolution Of Participation, James F. Orr Iii
A Business Perspective On Education: Launching A Revolution Of Participation, James F. Orr Iii
Maine Policy Review
Business has been increasingly concerned about the reform of education in the U.S. in recent years, according to James F. Orr III, chief executive officer of UNUM. Although financial resources have been contributed to the reform efforts, Orr admits, business has not taken the larger step of actually participating in the process of education reform. Participation, he argues, is central to changing schools to respond to the realities of the 21st century. Business must retake ownership of American schools, along with other stakeholders and citizens in general. In this article, based on an address made earlier this year at a …
Reflections On Citizenship: Thinking About Power As Interaction, Leslie I. Hill
Reflections On Citizenship: Thinking About Power As Interaction, Leslie I. Hill
Maine Policy Review
The steady decline of participation in many areas of public life suggests that we may be overlooking power as not only a source of the problem, but also as a critical part of the solution. Leslie Hill argues that to revive concepts of citizenship and democratic participation enshrined in the language of the nation's founding, we ought to rethink conventional ideas about power as control and domination and, in the alternative, view power as interaction. She also suggests that we need to adopt new approaches to civic education that include this concept of power as interactive politics. Underlying this argument, …

Repairing The Three-Legged Stool Of Ethics: A Conversation With Rushworth Kidder, Rushworth Kidder
Maine Policy Review
As founder and president of the two-year-old Institute for Global Ethics (in Camden, Maine), Rushworth Kidder concerns himself not only with chronicling the moral dissonance that characterizes contemporary American society, but also with identifying and trying approaches that address this discord. He is someone who is troubled by what is, but is full of hope for what can be. Earlier this year, Maine Policy Review visited Kidder and queried him about his work and the state of the nation's political values and institutions. This article is an edited version of his comments.
