Workplace Education Programs In Small- And Medium-Sized Michigan Firms, Kevin M. Hollenbeck, William Anderson
Workplace Education Programs In Small- And Medium-Sized Michigan Firms, Kevin M. Hollenbeck, William Anderson
Upjohn Institute Working Papers
This paper presents a systematic, baseline picture of workplace education programs in small and medium-sized businesses (less than 500 employees) in Michigan. Specifically, it addresses why some firms are offering and other firms are not offering workplace education programs, what are the characteristics of the programs being provided, and what are the impacts of these programs on firms and employees. The paper draws upon two data sources. Case studies of 28 Michigan businesses were undertaken between May 1991 and July 1992 and a combination mail/telephone survey of small businesses in Michigan was conducted in early 1992. The paper finds that …
Juvenile Justice: An Examination Of Disparities In Dispositions, Michael P. Brown
Juvenile Justice: An Examination Of Disparities In Dispositions, Michael P. Brown
Dissertations
The present study tests the utility of status characteristics and expectation states theory in the context of the juvenile court. The theory contends that there is dispositional certainty when case related factors are consistently rated serious or nonserious; the severity of the sanction will reflect the seriousness of the case. However, the likelihood of sentencing disparities based on individual characteristics (e.g., race and SES) increases as case related factors become increasingly inconsistent, with some rated serious and others rated nonserious.
Data to test this theory were collected from the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Court, Kalamazoo, Michigan in June and July, 1990. …
A Measure Of State-Trait Anger With Adolescent Sex Offenders, Adolescent Delinquents, And A Normal Adolescent Population, Brett D. Lincoln
A Measure Of State-Trait Anger With Adolescent Sex Offenders, Adolescent Delinquents, And A Normal Adolescent Population, Brett D. Lincoln
Dissertations
Research indicates that sexual offending juveniles are angry. Furthermore, sexual offending is seen as a primary means to reduce anger by these youth. However there is little empirical support of these positions. Few comparative studies of sexual offenders with other experimental or control groups exist.
The purpose of this study was to assess differences of anger among three adolescent groups: juvenile delinquent, sexual offender and a control. Assessment of anger was across six subscales of Spielberger's (1988) State Trait Anger Expression Inventory (STAXI). The subscales of interest were: State, Trait, Trait Anger Temperament, Trait Anger Repressed, Anger Expression/In and Anger …
Applied Relaxation Training In The Treatment Of Genital Herpes, Kent A. Koehn
Applied Relaxation Training In The Treatment Of Genital Herpes, Kent A. Koehn
Dissertations
Four individuals with frequent recurrences of genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) were trained in Applied Relaxation (AR). Participants included in the research were all women, had been diagnosed with herpes at least one year prior to the study, experienced 6 or more outbreaks annually, and were not taking antiviral medications.
The experiment employed a multiple baseline across subjects design with individual baselines of 11, 13, 17, and 21 weeks. Participants maintained daily diary recordings of the frequency, duration, and severity of their herpes activity from baseline until a minimum of three months post-treatment.
Treatment consisted of 10 individual AR sessions. …
The Rise And Decline Of Mental Health Hospitals In The State Of Michigan, Gerald H. Smith
The Rise And Decline Of Mental Health Hospitals In The State Of Michigan, Gerald H. Smith
Dissertations
The State of Michigan has been partially responsible for the treatment of the mentally ill population since 1832, when Wayne County General Hospital opened its doors. The state government made a commitment to care for the afflicted, and at the same time provide an opportunity for other individuals to participate in their treatment. Eventually this commitment led to the establishment of employment for many citizens, and gradually, over the decades, a mental health bureaucracy emerged. It was necessary to hire not only professional staff, but also support staff such as food services, housekeeping, maintenance, and the like. Mental health facilities …
Family Support, Physical Impairment, And Adherence In Hemodialysis: An Investigation Of Main And Buffering Effects, Alan Christensen, Timothy Smith, Charles Turner, John Holman Jr., Martin Gregory, Martina Rich
Family Support, Physical Impairment, And Adherence In Hemodialysis: An Investigation Of Main And Buffering Effects, Alan Christensen, Timothy Smith, Charles Turner, John Holman Jr., Martin Gregory, Martina Rich
Alan J. Christensen
Patient noncompliance is a pervasive problem among end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. Previous studies have implicated social support as an important correlate of adherence behavior in other chronic illness groups, but little research has examined this relationship in a hemodialysis population. The present study examined the main and interactive effects of social support in the family and illness-related physical impairment with regard to patient compliance in a sample of 78 hemodialysis patients. Results indicated that patients holding perceptions of a more supportive family environment exhibited significantly more favorable adherence to fluid-intake restrictions than did patients reporting less family support. Family …

1989 Chinese Pro-Democracy Movement And U.S. News Media, Jie Sun
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis explores three aspects of the relationship between U.S. news media and the Chinese pro-democracy movement in 1989. These three aspects are: How much attention did u.s. newspapers give to the Chinese pro-democracy movement in 1989? How did u.s. newspapers portray the power struggle in the Chinese government during the time when the Chinese pro-democracy movement took place? Has there been any change in the image of China during and after the Chinese pro-democracy movement in 1989? Research data are drawn from the following three U.S. newspapers: The New York Times, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times. Content analysis …

Olympics In Barcelona: Up Close And Personal, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
The 1992 Summer Olympics from Barcelona is less than a week old and already I am irritated by any number of things, but especially by NBC. Those who chart such things tell us that NBC will provide 161 hours of mostly taped coverage of the XXVth Olympiad. What they don't tell us is that of these 161 hours, approximately 10 minutes of each hour contains actual event coverage. The other 50 minutes of the hour are filled with commercials from every major U.S. corporation featuring Olympic athletes past and present; promotional spots for NBC programming; endless carping about the personal …

The Concept Of "Communication Skills" In The Discipline Of Speech Communication, Lynn Bales
The Concept Of "Communication Skills" In The Discipline Of Speech Communication, Lynn Bales
Dissertations and Theses
This investigation explored the dialectic of communication competence from an historical prospective and successfully identified seven common threads in competence theory. Communication skills and skills classifications were linked to competency issues. A content analysis of the 452 page leading national skills level communication text identified 185 skills behaviors along with their associated communication competencies. Skills were described in twelve categories; however, no consistent definition or treatment of communication skills was in evidence. Implications of the findings were discussed.

The impact of agribusiness on a region requires the use of multipliers to estimate the full economic effect. Multipliers account for the interactions from industries to industries and from industries to households and back, and are produced easily from input-output studies.
