Construction Of Stationary Markov Equilibria In A Strategic Market Game, Ioannis Karatzas, Martin Shubik, William D. Sudderth
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper studies stationary noncooperative equilibria in an economy with fiat money , one nondurable commodity , countably many time periods, no credit or futures market, and a measure space of agents — who may differ in their preferences and in the distributions of their (random) endowments. These agents are immortal, and hold fiat money as a means of hedging against the random fluctuations in their endowments of the commodity. In the aggregate, these fluctuations offset each other, and equilibrium prices are constant. We carry out an equilibrium analysis that focuses on distribution of wealth, on consumption, and on price …

Nfl After Four Weeks - Nfl In Court - Fay Vincent Resigns As Comish- And More, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Four weeks into the new National Football League season and already there are a number of surprises. First and foremost among them is the performance of the 3-1 Tampa Bay Bucs, who last Sunday won their first road game after 15 straight losses. The much maligned Sam Wyche seems to have his team going fairly well so far, especially the previously disappointing Vinny Testaverde, who seemed to be suffering from secondary illiteracy until the last few weeks. Before you go out and buy playoff tickets, or even a pair of orange pants, you might note that the Bucs victims are …

Time Series Modeling With A Bayesian Frame Of Reference: Concepts, Illustrations And Asymptotics, Peter C.B. Phillips, Werner Ploberger
Time Series Modeling With A Bayesian Frame Of Reference: Concepts, Illustrations And Asymptotics, Peter C.B. Phillips, Werner Ploberger
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
This paper offers an approach to time series modeling that attempts to reconcile classical and Bayesian methods. The central idea put forward to achieve this reconciliation is that the Bayesian approach relies implicitly on a frame of reference for the data generating mechanism that is quite different from the one that is employed in the classical approach. Differences in inferences from the two approaches are therefore to be expected unless the altered frame of reference is taken into account. We show that the new frame of reference in Bayesian inference is a consequence of a change of measure that arises …

Peer Reviewers Describe Success In Grant Writing, James Pokrywczynski
Peer Reviewers Describe Success In Grant Writing, James Pokrywczynski
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
This article presents a comment on success in grant writing. According to the survey of 92 administrators of mass communication programs, successful grant applications rank in the top 10 in importance to successful faculty performance. To increase the success rate of grant proposals, many universities hold faculty seminars with representatives from a research support or graduate studies office making presentations. The objective of the author is to obtain specific criteria on acceptable grant proposals from the people who review proposals in mass communication research. According to reviewers, grant proposals in the communication area are almost exclusively quantitative.

Abduction In Annotated Logic Programming, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan
Abduction In Annotated Logic Programming, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan
Kno.e.sis Publications
The author investigates techniques to make the logic programming paradigm more expressive for knowledge representation, while simultaneously retaining the computational advantages of efficiency and simplicity. He extends the annotated language of K. Thirunarayan and K. Kifer (1989) in various directions to obtain an enriched representation language. In particular, rule bodies are permitted to be a conjunction of literals, and the rules to be recursive. A class of annotated logic programs called the stratified programs is identified which can be given a unique supported minimal Herbrand model as their meaning. Abductive reasoning is integrated into this annotated logic framework. The notion …

Last Interglacial And Holocene Trends In Sea-Level Maxima Around Australia: Implications For Modern Rates, Edward A. Bryant
Last Interglacial And Holocene Trends In Sea-Level Maxima Around Australia: Implications For Modern Rates, Edward A. Bryant
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
This paper defines the spatial trend in sea-level around Australia at 3 timescales, namely at the time of the maximum of the last interglacial around 125000 yr BP, during the Holocene maximum between 5-6000 yr BP and over the last 20 years. Last interglacial elevations range from -2m around the Great Barrier Reef to +32m in northeast Tasmania. Trend surface analysis shows that over 77% of the noise in these sea-level elevations can be accounted for by a pattern evidencing tectonic uplift towards the southern edge of the continent. Assuming a eustatic sea-level at this time of +4 to 6m, …
