Civics, Social Studies And Service Topic Bibliography, Robin Vue Benson, Robert D. Shumer
Bibliographies
Participation in service activities can be a vital component to civics and social studies education. The sources selected for this topic bibliography are intended to aid practitioners in thinking about and developing service activities in their classrooms, schools and communities. The first section contains references providing background information and conceptual frameworks useful in thinking broadly about the role of service in education and youth development. This is followed by items which feature description of service programs or information pertinent to program development. Finally, Section Three has references discussing the civic and citizenship education context surrounding any service activity. Records in …

Intergenerational Service Topic Bibliography, Robin Vue Benson, Robert D. Shumer
Bibliographies
This topic bibliography is produced in response to numerous requests from service and education practitioners for information on intergenerational issues and programs. Additional records have been added in this most recent revision. The primary source for the below citations and annotations is the Eduational Resources Information Center's (ERIC) database of Resources In Education and Current Index to Journals in Education. This material is supplemented by references from a draft bibliography by Generations United as well as some resources abstracted by the National Information Center for Service-Learning. Records from each source are indicated by ERIC, GU, and NICSL, respectively, following the …

Impacts And Effects Of Service Topic Bibliography, Robin Vue Benson, Robert D. Shumer, Madeleine S. Hengel
Bibliographies
Many claims have been made about the impact of service-learning on participants, programs and communities. From positive influences on psychological, social and intellectual development to effects on alienation, attitudes and social behavior, service-learning has been mentioned as a method of achieving these outcomes. Additional reviews of the literature in areas related to civic participation and general engagement in the public, political process indicate that service-learning can have an affect on the civic development of youth.
On the other hand, some studies have indicated service-learning does not always have the desired outcomes. As Dan Conrad points out in his review of …

Mortality In A Migrating Mennonite Church Congregation, Joan C. Stevenson, Phillip Mark Everson, L. Rogers
Mortality In A Migrating Mennonite Church Congregation, Joan C. Stevenson, Phillip Mark Everson, L. Rogers
Anthropology Faculty and Staff Publications
Preston's two-census method of demographic estimation is applied to three pairs of reconstructed censuses from the records of a migrating Mennonite church congregation covering the period 1780-1890, The three pairs of censuses correspond to three periods (1780-1790, 1850-1860, and 1880-1890) and to stays in three settings (Prussia, Russia, and Kansas, respectively). The Mennonites' stay in Prussia was a period of hardship. In Russia they expanded their economic base and developed new farming methods, dramatically increasing their productivity. The Mennonites took these skills to Kansas, where they continued to be successful. The increase in life expectancy at age 5 corroborates this …

South Dakota Coordinated Resource Management, James Johnson, Martin Beutler
Economics Staff Paper Series
CRM is young in South Dakota. Operating MOU's were signed in December 1988 to accommodate traditional and emerging issues on private as well as public lands. It wasn't until 1994 that fiscal resources were assembled to provide intensive CRM training. The training is three tiered: (1) inform high level administrators and organizational leaders about CRM and solicit their support, (2) present 13 CRM Community Training workshops in 2·day sessions to local community leaders, including landowners and resource personnel, and (3) train a cadre of CRM facilitators in two a day sessions, both private and public, broadly dispersed in the state, …
How Optimal Penalties Change With The Amount Of Harm, Eric Bennett Rasmusen
How Optimal Penalties Change With The Amount Of Harm, Eric Bennett Rasmusen
Eric Bennett Rasmusen
Intuition tells us that the optimal penalty and court care should rise smoothly with the harm to the victim. A formal model is constructed to see if this intuition can be justified, but it appears not to be generally true: sometimes the optimal penalty and court care increase discontinuously with harm, even under reasonable assumptions on the relationship between the penalty and the amount of crime. One reason why criminal penalties are not maximal is that even if they are fines, without real costs, the efficient level of court care will still allow them to sometimes be mistakenly inflicted on …

I test for evidence of an electoral cycle in prime contract awards, testing for state-level accelerations in contract awards and deobligations induced by presidential elections.

Population Estimates For Oregon: July 1, 1994, Howard Wineberg, Population Research Center, Portland State University
Oregon Population Estimates and Reports
This report provides population estimates for Oregon, its counties, and cities for the years 1980 through 1994. As mandated by Oregon law (ORS 190.510 to 190.610), the Center for Population Research and Census at Portland State University, acting on behalf of the State Board of Higher Education, annually estimates the July 1 population for each county and incorporated city in Oregon. These population estimates are used in the allocation of certain state tax revenues to cities and counties.
This report has eight tables and five figures which provide detailed analyses of Oregon's current population data as well as an historical …

The Anchor: 1995
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). As of Fall 2019 The Anchor has moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Fisheries management papers
This paper seeks to examine the key issues of both State and Commonwealth native title legislation for the fishing industry and fisheries management in Western Australia. Considerations for Aboriginal involvement in the industry and long-standing as well as recent concessionary arrangements for traditional usage of fish resources are examined. Industry reactions and future plans to accommodate native title in a positive framework are explored.
