Improving Community Based Family Planning Services And The Potential For Increasing Contraceptive Prevalence In Bangladesh, Amy Gale Dunston, Peter C. Miller Jan 1995

Improving Community Based Family Planning Services And The Potential For Increasing Contraceptive Prevalence In Bangladesh, Amy Gale Dunston, Peter C. Miller

Reproductive Health

This report contains descriptions of 13 family planning (FP) projects recently implemented in Bangladesh. The results in terms of the contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) are analyzed to investigate the degree to which improved FP service delivery in Bangladesh can increase contraceptive use in the present status of demand, investigate the programmatic factors most associated with increased prevalence, and make these projects more widely known. Criteria for inclusion included coverage of a geographic area where household distribution of contraceptive supplies was available, and where at least one measurement of CPR has been made through credible survey efforts since July 1988. The …

Support For Research, Dissemination, Utilization, And Policy In Bangladesh, Ubaidur Rob, Donna Nager

Reproductive Health

Through the initiative of the Family Planning Fortnight: Meeting the Future Challenges, held in December 1993, the Government of Bangladesh made a policy statement about the critical importance of dealing with the nation's population problem. The Fortnight provided the strategic framework for developing actions to strengthen the National Family Planning Program that would meet the country's population challenges. To initiate rapid action, the Family Planning Fortnight Steering Committee, under the chairmanship of the Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, formed a working group to prepare a report that would capitalize on all earlier efforts and lay out a plan …

Effect Of Organic Solvents On The Separation Of Benzoic Acids By Capillary Electrophoresis, Young J. Lee, William E. Price, Margaret Sheil Jan 1995

Effect Of Organic Solvents On The Separation Of Benzoic Acids By Capillary Electrophoresis, Young J. Lee, William E. Price, Margaret Sheil

Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)

The effect of organic modifiers on the separation of a number of closely related isomeric benzoic acids by capillary electrophoresis is described. It is shown that while a single modifier concentration cannot help resolve the entire electropherogram, organic modifiers do significantly enhance the resolution of parts of the separation system by comparison with 40 mmol l-1 phosphate buffer. The effects on separation and retention times are discussed in terms of the effects on electroosmotic flow and the electrophoretic mobilities of the charged solutes. The effects were found to be modifier specific, although the trends were in the same direction (ie., …

Nourish And Nurture: World Food Programme Assistance For Early Childhood Education In India's Integrated Child Development Service, Iram Siraj-Blatchford

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Part of UNESCO's Action Research in Family and Early Childhood series, this monograph is based upon a technical report on the Early Childhood Education (ECE) component of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) program in India. This document overviews the ICDS and how better use could be made of World Food Programme (WFP) food aid along with the ECE component, including the aspect of providing education to mothers and adolescent girls. The report notes that the WFP has provided support to ICDS since March 1976; the other main donor supporting ICDS is the American organization, CARE. Also noted is India's …

Comparison Of Two Methods For Detection Of Cryptosporidium & Giardia In Water, Eva C. Nieminski, Frank W. Schaefer Iii, Jerry E. Ongerth Jan 1995

Comparison Of Two Methods For Detection Of Cryptosporidium & Giardia In Water, Eva C. Nieminski, Frank W. Schaefer Iii, Jerry E. Ongerth

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The steps of two immunofluorescent-antibody-based detection methods were evaluated for their efficiencies in detecting Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts. The two methods evaluated were the American Society for Testing and Materials proposed test method for Giardia cysts and Cryptosporidium oocysts in low-turbidity water and a procedure employing sampling by membrane filtration, Percoll-Percoll step gradient, and immunofluorescent staining. The membrane filter sampling method was characterized by higher recovery rates in all three types of waters tested: raw surface water, partially treated water from a flocculation basin, and filtered water. Cyst and oocyst recovery efficiencies decreased with increasing water turbidity regardless of …

Molecular Epidemiology Of A Fast-Food Restaurant-Associated Outbreak Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In Washington State, Linda M. Grimm, Marcia Goldoft, John Kobayashi, Jay H. Lewis, Dalia Alfi, Ann Marie Perdichizzi, Phillip I. Tarr, Jerry E. Ongerth, Steve L. Moseley, Mansour Samadpour Jan 1995

Molecular Epidemiology Of A Fast-Food Restaurant-Associated Outbreak Of Escherichia Coli O157:H7 In Washington State, Linda M. Grimm, Marcia Goldoft, John Kobayashi, Jay H. Lewis, Dalia Alfi, Ann Marie Perdichizzi, Phillip I. Tarr, Jerry E. Ongerth, Steve L. Moseley, Mansour Samadpour

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We studied the molecular epidemiology of the recent fast-food restaurant chain-associated Escherichia coli O157:H7 outbreak in Washington State. Genomic DNAs prepared from strains isolated from 433 patients were probed with radiolabelled Shiga-like toxin (SLT) I and SLT II genes and bacteriophage l DNA and were subsequently analyzed for their restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) patterns. The SLT RFLP and l RFLP profiles of an E. coli O157:H7 strain isolated from the incriminated beef and prototype patient were compared with those of the patient isolates for determination of the concordance between patterns. Of the 377 patients with primary and secondary cases …

Mine Boundary Detection Using Markov Random Field Models, Xia Hua, Jennifer L. Davidson, Noel A. Cressie Jan 1995

Mine Boundary Detection Using Markov Random Field Models, Xia Hua, Jennifer L. Davidson, Noel A. Cressie

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Detection of objects in images in an automated fashion is necessary for many applications, including automated target recognition. In this paper, we present results of boundary detection using Markov random fields. Once the boundaries of regions are detected, object recognition can be conducted to classify the regions within the boundaries. Thus, an approach that gives good boundary detection is very important in many automated target recognition systems. Our algorithm for boundary detection combines a Bayesian approach with a histogram specification technique to locate edges of objects that have a closed-loop boundary. The boundary image is modeled by a Markov random …

The Formation Of Ternary Compound Fe3mo3c By Ball Milling, L M. Di, Andrzej Calka, Z L. Li, J S. Williams Jan 1995

The Formation Of Ternary Compound Fe3mo3c By Ball Milling, L M. Di, Andrzej Calka, Z L. Li, J S. Williams

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Ball milling of Mo in nitrogen and ammonia gases has been studied. After heating, the formation of an intriguing ternary compound, Fe3Mo3C1−x , was observed as a result of Fe (and C) contamination from the milling apparatus. For a comparison, mechanical alloying of Fe–Mo–C powders with a stoichiometric composition of Fe3Mo3C was also performed and again an Fe–Mo–C alloy was obtained after milling.Thermal analysis shows a single transition peak for the formation of both the Fe3Mo3C phase in the latter case and also for Fe3 …

In–Flight History: The Canadian–Australian Literary Prize And The Question Of Nationalism, Gerry Turcotte Jan 1995

In–Flight History: The Canadian–Australian Literary Prize And The Question Of Nationalism, Gerry Turcotte

Faculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)

[Extract] .... the Canadian–Australian Prize may well be celebrating a shaky reality indeed, if the premise for the award is merely to showcase a mythical uniformity of landscape. The wide variety of winners over what is almost two decades contests this reading, if only because it continually redefines and problematizes what it means to be Australian or Canadian. In doing so it encourages its readers to acknowledge, and hopefully to celebrate, the value of multiplicity and difference. Despite this, as the prize approaches its second decade, and as its administrators in both countries decide whether or not the award will …

Low Income Women's Perception Of Preparedness For Self Care And Infant Care Following Discharge From A Less Than Forty-Eight Hour Hospitalization For Birth, Patricia M. Ritola

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to describe perceptions of preparation for self care and infant care of new mothers of low income following a short hospitalization for childbirth. Orem's nursing model was used as the conceptual framework for the study. A descriptive correlational, cross sectional design was used to examine preparedness for self care and infant care. The sample (N = 50) consisted of women who were served by Michigan Medicaid, 18 years or older and were hospitalized less than 48 hours. A telephone interview was conducted seven days after discharge.; Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings identified …

Caregiver Wellness Following Interventions Based On Interdisciplinary Geriatric Assessment, Julie A. Smith Jan 1995

Caregiver Wellness Following Interventions Based On Interdisciplinary Geriatric Assessment, Julie A. Smith

Masters Theses

The study purpose was to examine the effect on interventions based on interdisciplinary geriatric assessment on family caregiver's wellness. A pretest-posttest research design was used, including a sample of 35 family caregivers of frail older adults. Neuman's Systems Model provided the theoretical framework. Care recipients and caregivers were evaluated by an interdisciplinary geriatric team and interventions for that family were developed and implemented. Paired t-tests and Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed rank test were performed to compare scores of pretest and posttest scores on self-rated health, the Burden Interview and Life Satisfaction, before and after the intervention. Results indicated that there was …

Maine Folklife, Vol. 1, Iss. 1, Maine Folklife Center

Maine Folklife Center Newsletter

So much has happened since the last Newsletter appeared that it will be impossible to cover it all, but perhaps a little history would help. Back in 1983 when I became Chair of Anthropology, Rita Breton came on line as Archives Manager...

At about this time we decided to change our name to the Maine Folklife Center, in de facto recognition both that archival work was only a part of what we were doing and that we were getting more and more into public programming. A further part of our plan was to absorb Northeast Folklore and the Northeast Folklore …
