[Review Of] Sidner J. Larson. Catch Colt. American Indian Lives, Dorie S. Goldman Jan 1995

[Review Of] Sidner J. Larson. Catch Colt. American Indian Lives, Dorie S. Goldman

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Catch Colt describes Gros Ventre writer Sidner J. Larson's experience as a mixed-blood Native American looking for his heritage, identity, and personal direction. Although minority fiction writers (such as Rudolfo A. Anaya and Leslie Marmon Silko) have addressed this theme, non-fiction discussions of mixed-blood Native American lives are lacking. Larson's autobiography, however, is only moderately successful because he fails to make readers identify with his struggle as a member of “two different worlds at the same time...with a degree of non-acceptance by both."

[Review Of] Janet D. Spector. What This Awl Means: Feminist Archaeology At A Wahpeton Dakota Village, David M. Gradwohl Jan 1995

[Review Of] Janet D. Spector. What This Awl Means: Feminist Archaeology At A Wahpeton Dakota Village, David M. Gradwohl

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Janet Spector has written a book which is enjoyable, enlightening, and though-provoking reading. Those involved in anthropology, history, gender studies, and ethnic studies would do well to read this small volume carefully and ponder its issues. As she promises in the book’s subtitle, Spector presents archaeological evidence pertaining to the Wahpeton Dakota (Eastern Sioux) within a framework which lacks the Eurocentric and androcentric perspectives which too often characterize the study of American Indian pasts.

[Review Of] A. A. Carr. Eye Killers. American Indian Literature And Critical Studies Series, Vol. 13, Michael Elliott

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Melissa Roanhorse is having a tough day. Her mother has a drinking problem, her fish keep dying, and she has to contend with the everyday pressures of being a high school sophomore which, by themselves, are enough to keep most of us from remembering those teenage years too nostalgically. So when Falke, an ancient vampire who's been sleeping off a coma for the last hundred-odd years, shows up offering immortality and a ticket out of Albuquerque, there‘s no wonder that Melissa takes the offer and runs. What's a little blood-sucking compared to algebra?

[Review Of] Laura Uba. Asian Americans: Personality Patterns, Identity, And Mental Health, Linda Gonzalves Jan 1995

[Review Of] Laura Uba. Asian Americans: Personality Patterns, Identity, And Mental Health, Linda Gonzalves

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

When looking at issues of ethnicity and mental health we are constantly reminded that there is, at present, no unified paradigm to guide either the practitioner or the research scholar. What we do know is that the human organism is a socially constructed being. We also know that there are species-specific human needs that play out in the formation of mental well being; there does exist a common denominator, if you will, of optimum conditions and relational situations that underly all human development. Mental health is an arena where the universality of human needs meets the specificity or relativity of …

[Review Of] Tu Wei-Ming,Ed. The Living Tree: The Changing Meaning Of Being Chinese Today, Jim Schnell Jan 1995

[Review Of] Tu Wei-Ming,Ed. The Living Tree: The Changing Meaning Of Being Chinese Today, Jim Schnell

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

This book evolved from the spring, 1991 special issue of “Daedalus, the Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences". Tu Wei-ming presents a collection of perspectives of the Chinese identity. These essays stand alone well, some are more relevant and better written than others (as will be addressed in this review), but they collectively fail to provide a coherent unified interpretation. The chapter topics are somewhat related but the continuity among them is weak (which should not be interpreted as a shortcoming of the individual chapter authors).

[Review Of] Jewell Parker Rhodes. Voodoo Dreams, Opal Palmer Adisa Jan 1995

[Review Of] Jewell Parker Rhodes. Voodoo Dreams, Opal Palmer Adisa

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Until I read Jewell Parker Rhodes very finely crafted novel, Voodoo Dreams, Marie Laveau, the New Orleans voodoo queen loomed invincible, beyond the reaches of anyone: man, woman, Black, or white. But in this novel Rhodes skillfully humanizes Laveau by presenting the majority of characters, including our heroine, as soared people motivated by their insecurities and fears. Those who are bold enough to seize the opportunities presented to them, such as John, Marie Laveau’s vicious lover, exploit their power and manipulate others for their own glory. The Marie Laveau that we meet in this novel is the third in a …

[Review Of] Rita Dove, Foreword. Multicultural Voices, Michael Elliott Jan 1995

[Review Of] Rita Dove, Foreword. Multicultural Voices, Michael Elliott

Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Multicultural Voices gathers together an impressive array of writers and writings in a textbook aimed at secondary school readers. The book not only includes several of the more obvious and well-known authors -- Toni Morrison, Louise Erdrich, and Amy Tan, to name a few -- but also anthologizes a number of younger and less widely known writers whose contributions are equally provocative. While the bulk of the selections are either short stories or excerpts from novels (Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God and Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima are among those excerpted), the editors have also selected poetry, …

Introduction, Harriet Joseph Ottenheimer

Explorations in Ethnic Studies

The papers in this volume represent some of the best current scholarship on questions of ethnicity. All of them were first presented at the 1994 annual meeting of the National Association for Ethnic Studies, held in Kansas City, Missouri. With the announced theme of Ethnicity: Global Perspectives, the conference attracted scholars from many disciplines and many countries. Presentations were selected to reflect both global perspectives on ethnicity, and examples of emerging ethnic identities around the globe. The interdependence of local and global issues emerged repeatedly and became a foundational theme in many of the sessions.

A Summary Of Ideas For Sustaining Communication Programs, Paul E. Nelson Jan 1995

A Summary Of Ideas For Sustaining Communication Programs, Paul E. Nelson

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article offers several ideals for communication programs that want to persist through hard times. The ideal model for a faculty member varies by institution and level of instruction. If one is the major of last resort on the campus, if one is more likely to attract football players than members of the National Honors Society, and if one attracts majors because they do not have to take math, then one need better recruitment. On the other hand, grade inflation is a national problem, and it crosses many disciplines. The engineers and scientists tend to attract first rate students, but …

A Decade Of Home Schooling In Saskatchewan, Canada (1984-1994): A Case Study, Sandra Christine Hill Edd Jan 1995

A Decade Of Home Schooling In Saskatchewan, Canada (1984-1994): A Case Study, Sandra Christine Hill Edd

Dissertations

The efficacy of alternative education has had a significant impact on public education. The diversity of cultures, lifestyles, and needs of home-schooling families compelled the public educational sector to make available educational alternatives. The purpose of this study was to build upon previous research (Hill, 1988) by interviewing a sample of the same families and their children to investigate the longitudinal experiences for a follow-up study. The representative sample participated in a study entitled An Investigation of Home Schooling in Saskatchewan (Hill, 1988). Twenty families (18 parents and 25 children) were interviewed; 10 were selected as case studies. Home schoolers …

Large numbers of undocumented persons cross through the hills and canyons along the San Ysidro/Tijuana border region, on a nightly basis. As these helpless victims cross, border bandits and other criminals stalk these people and prey on them like predatory animals. The San Diego Police Department is charged with the responsibility of providing public safety along the United States/México international border. The purpose of this research was to investigate the circumstances which led to the establishment of the San Diego/Tijuana international border (1846-1848), the role and policy of the San Diego Police Department along the international border, and the relationship …

The purpose of this study was to analyze similarities and differences in how students with disabilities are identified in national databases. National data collection programs in the United States Departments of Education, Commerce, Labor, Justice, and Health and Human Services, as well as databases from the National Science Foundation, the American Council of Education, and the College Board, were examined. Nineteen national data collection programs were selected as being potentially useful in the extraction of policy-relevant information on the educational status and performance of students with disabilities. Among these 19 programs there was significant variability in the disability categories used. …

Virginia Commonwealth University's Plan For A Diverse Community, Matthew T. Corkern

Honors Theses

Having always been intrigued by academic administration, it is only appropriate that I chose to study leadership perspectives within this traditional, yet ever changing context. Desiring the challenge of intellectual development as well as an opportunity to bring an effective change, I researched and assembled a pilot project. With use of this procedure, the Office of Academic Planning at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), may now analyze the implementation of various directions and components of their Strategic Plan over the next months for the September 1995 deadline.

The Grotian Quest Revisited, Jeffrey Waggett Jan 1995

The Grotian Quest Revisited, Jeffrey Waggett

Honors Theses

In 1625, more than twenty years prior to the ending of the Thirty Years War with the Treaty of Westphalia, Hugo Grotius wrote De Jure Belli-ac Pacis, outlining his solutions for a troubled world. While the details and particularities of his ideas may not be compatible with today's unsettled and transitory world, what he strove and quested for is as applicable today as it was at the beginning of the modem state system. At the time of Grotius, feudalism was being replaced by statist concerns, centering around territory and a dual centralization of domestic authority and military power. The transitory …

Personal Leadership : A Course Proposal For The Jepson School Curriculum, Carrie S. Smith Jan 1995

Personal Leadership : A Course Proposal For The Jepson School Curriculum, Carrie S. Smith

Honors Theses

One growth area within the field of leadership studies is the concept of personal leadership. Personal leadership encourages identifying and living by one's own core values. It incorporates defining and adhering to a personal mission statement and vision. Teaching personal leadership means identifying specific practices, exercises, disciplines and habits that aid the individual in learning to lead a principle-centered life. Since the material is translatable into all realms of a leaders life, teaching personal leadership methods to Jepson students will aid them in gaining a better understanding of themselves and will prove to be a practical preparatory course for leadership …
