"I will not mince my words. We live at a precarious moment in history. Relations of subjection, suffering, dispossession, and contempt for human dignity and the sanctity of life are at the center of social existence. Emotional dislocation, moral sickness and individual helplessness remain a ubiquitous feature of our time. Our much heralded form of democracy has become, unbeknownst to many Americans, subverted by its contradictory relationship to the very object of it address; human freedom, social justice, and a tolerance and respect for difference. In the current historical juncture, discourses of democracy continue to masquerade as disinterested solicitations, and …

Beliefs About The Prevalence Of Dissociative Identity Disorder, Sexual Abuse, And Ritual Abuse Among Religious And Nonreligious Therapists, Mark R. Mcminn, Nathaniel G. Wade Jan 1995

Beliefs About The Prevalence Of Dissociative Identity Disorder, Sexual Abuse, And Ritual Abuse Among Religious And Nonreligious Therapists, Mark R. Mcminn, Nathaniel G. Wade

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Four hundred ninety-seven Christian therapists and 100 membe.rs of the American Psychological Association returned questionnaires indicating the prevalence of dissociative identity disorder (DID) . sexual abuse, and ritual abuse in their clinical practices. There was a low rate of diagnosing DID and ritual abuse among all respondents. Christian pSychologists were slightly more likely to diagnose ritual abuse than other psychologists, but they were no more likely to diagnose DID or sexual abuse. No differences were observed in diagnosing ritual abuse or DID between Christian psychologists, other licensed Christian therapists, non licensed Christian therapists, and lay counselors. Licensed Christian therapists who …

Religious Orientation, Guilt, Confession, And Forgiveness, Katheryn Rhoads Meek, Jeanne S. Albright, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 1995

Religious Orientation, Guilt, Confession, And Forgiveness, Katheryn Rhoads Meek, Jeanne S. Albright, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Religious orientation and psychological functioning were investigated in an analog study with 83 participants. After completing the Religious Orientation Scale (Allport & Ross, 1967), participants read a continuous narrative with three scenarios in which they first committed a dishonest act, and then felt compelled to confess what they had done. The final scenario contained a manipulation of grace or no-grace, in which half of the participants were forgiven for their act and half were not. Following each scenario, participants were tested for feelings of guilt and related behavioral and emotional responses. Intrinsically religious participants were more prone to guilt, more …

Tuberculosis And The Power Of The State: Toward The Development Of Rational Standards For The Review Of Compulsory Public Health Powers, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 1995

Tuberculosis And The Power Of The State: Toward The Development Of Rational Standards For The Review Of Compulsory Public Health Powers, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article uses tuberculosis as the paradigm for exploring rational standards for the exercise of compulsory public health powers. Extant doctrine in disability and constitutional law provides a lens for examining judicial review of state interventions. The author first sets out the central epidemiological and biological aspects of tuberculosis to demonstrate the strength of the governmental interest in curtailing the epidemic. Second, he examines the interventions of testing, screening, and confinement of persons with tuberculosis, where he focuses on two congregate settings--correctional and health care facilities--that present substantial health risks and are principal foci for the exercise of state intervention. …

The Resurgent Tuberculosis Epidemic In The Era Of Aids: Reflections On Public Health, Law, And Society, Lawrence O. Gostin Jan 1995

The Resurgent Tuberculosis Epidemic In The Era Of Aids: Reflections On Public Health, Law, And Society, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The resurgence of tuberculosis and the rise in drug-resistant cases is neither inexplicable nor unexpected, but rather is the predictable outcome of a complex configuration of biological, social, and behavioral factors that have converged in America over the past decade. This article examines the biological, social, and behavioral causes of the epidemic, and suggests a comprehensive public health strategy for curtailing tuberculosis and other infectious diseases. When thoughtfully conceived, public health strategies can be implemented that are consistent with the limitations that both constitutional law and disability law place on the authority of the state. While traditional concepts of public …

Port Multipliers For Singapore: Impact On Income, Output, And Employment, Rex S. Toh, Sock-Yong Phang, Habibullah Khan

Research Collection School Of Economics

This article examines the contribution of the activities of the Port of Singapore Authority (PSA), a government-owned statutory board which operates almost all of the port related activities in Singapore, to the prosperity of the entire country, by way of multiplier analysis. Input-output analysis is used to compute the income, output, and employment multipliers of port activities, broken down into direct, indirect, and induced effects. The policy implications on port investment and maritime policy follow.

Music And Cultural Politics: Ideology And Resistance In Singapore, Lily Kong Jan 1995

Music And Cultural Politics: Ideology And Resistance In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper focuses on popular music written and produced by Singaporeans to illustrate the nature of social relationships based on ideological hegemony and resistance. Analysis is based on two groups of music: 'national' songs supported by the government in the 'Sing Singapore' programme; and songs brought together in Not the Singapore song book. Interviews with local lyricists and analysis of video productions provide supplementary information. Music is used by the ruling elite to perpetuate certain ideologies aimed at political socialization and to inculcate a civil religion that directs favour and fervour towards the nation. Music is also a form of …

An Economic Analysis Of The York River Basin, Kathy Corish, Marcia Berman, Carlton Hershner

Reports

The purpose of this report is to examine several interrelated economic factors influencing growth within the York River Watershed Region (hereinafter referred to as the Region). The Region consists primarily of eleven counties: Caroline, Gloucester Hanover James City, King and Queen King William, Louisa, New Kent, Orange, Spotsylvania and York. The City of Williamsburg is also included separately due to its significance and frequent listing as an independent city within the Region. The City of Williamsburg falls into both James City and York Counties; thus , figures for Williamsburg are occasionally combined with York or James City County figures.

The …

Attachment, Social Support, And Violence In Adolescent Delinquents, James R. Craft Jan 1995

Attachment, Social Support, And Violence In Adolescent Delinquents, James R. Craft

Theses and Dissertations

Attachment relationships between children and their primary caretakers have been hypothesized to contribute to internal working models of subsequent relationships with others. Poor attachment might lead to internal working models which devalue later relationships, making the perpetration of violence against others more likely. One focus of this study was to propose a model which combined parental bonding, adolescent attachment, and perceived family support to predict the severity of violence used against others by adolescent delinquents. A second focus was to test the proposed model in predicting the total number of violent offenses committed by adolescent delinquents. One hundred and forty-five …

Prevention As A Component Of Homeless Policy: A Longer-Term Evaluation Of The State Of Virginia's Homeless Intervention Program, Emma Kathleen Flaherty Jan 1995

Prevention As A Component Of Homeless Policy: A Longer-Term Evaluation Of The State Of Virginia's Homeless Intervention Program, Emma Kathleen Flaherty

Theses and Dissertations

A comprehensive homeless policy includes emergency housing, transitional housing, permanent housing, and prevention components. Researchers have determined that all four categories of homeless assistance are essential to address the needs of the diverse groups that comprise the homeless population.

This dissertation focuses on the prevention component which is designed to assist those in marginal economic circumstances who experience an unavoidable housing crisis. Several states have state-sponsored and state-funded homeless prevention programs.

The Commonwealth of Virginia authorized funding for the Homeless Intervention Program (HIP) in FY 1989-90. A Short-Term Study of the first group of participants conducted by Johnson, Brooks, Hambrick, …

Reinforcer Demand Elasticity Under Direct Competition Between Rats, Susan L. Reynolds '95 Jan 1995

Reinforcer Demand Elasticity Under Direct Competition Between Rats, Susan L. Reynolds '95

Honors Projects

Economic theory predicts that cost is an inverse function of the quantity of a commodity. This has also been shown in studies of behavioral economics (Dougan, 1992). According to the law of supply and demand, competition between organisms should drive prices up more rapidly. Previous studies with rats have failed to find an effect of competition; however, the competition was indirect in those studies (Johns, unpublished thesis). In the present experiment, twelve female rats actively competed in pairs for reinforcers on each of four modified fixed interval (FI) schedules: FI 30 s, FI 60 s, FI 120 s, and FI …

Examining The Role Of Agitation And Aggression In Perceived Caregiver Burden, Anthony R. Peterson '95 Jan 1995

Examining The Role Of Agitation And Aggression In Perceived Caregiver Burden, Anthony R. Peterson '95

Honors Projects

Recent research efforts in the area of dementia have revealed that the affected patients are not the only people that are impacted by this disorder. There are hidden victims that, more often than not, go unnoticed. These people are the caregivers, often family members, of a dementia patient. More and more attention is being focused on caregiver burden because it has been found that caring for a dementia patient can lead to medical and psychological problems in the caregiver. The purpose of this study was to determine if a positive correlation exists between the caregivers perceived burden and the patient's …

Error Recognition In Calculus Problems: What Characterizes Expertise?, Alisha M. Crawley '95 Jan 1995

Error Recognition In Calculus Problems: What Characterizes Expertise?, Alisha M. Crawley '95

Honors Projects

Previous research in the area of expert-novice comparisons of mathematical problem solving has focused on the differences in categorization of and performance on math problems. These studies have led to the conclusion that while solving or categorizing problems, experts focus on deep processing and novices focus on surface structure. Other research dealing with true/false multiplication equations has shown that adults (considered experts in multiplication) can reject false answers before processing the equation. This study attempts to extend these findings by looking at the differences between experts and novices in the recognition of errors in true/false calculus verification expressions. The participants …

A Possible Age-Related Neurological Mechanism In The Formation Of Problem-Solving Set, Catherine J. Blair '95 Jan 1995

A Possible Age-Related Neurological Mechanism In The Formation Of Problem-Solving Set, Catherine J. Blair '95

Honors Projects

Problem-solving set is the ability to focus on one successful solution and to screen out other (non) successful solutions. One problem-solving set study by Ransopher and Thompson (1991) showed no main effect or marked difference of responses with age. However, these results are not surprising because the research design perhaps facilitated responses. Two outcomes were thought possible for this particular study. The inhibition-deficit view (Hasher and Zachs, 1988) suggests that older people may be less susceptible to the effects of problem-solving set because they would be less likely to be focused on just one solution set. Dempster (1992) suggests that …
