Gender Analysis Of The Spiritual Well-Being Scale, Karen J. Kellums
Gender Analysis Of The Spiritual Well-Being Scale, Karen J. Kellums
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)
The purpose of this study was to determine if any of the twenty items on the Spiritual Well-Being Scale (SWBS) show differential item functioning (DIF) between gender and item response. Archival data were obtained on two groups: (a) 331 members of the Christian Association for Psychological Studies (CAPS, USA), 197 males and 134 females, average age 44.5 years (Adams, 1993; Stratton, 1992); and (b) 392 incoming freshmen students at a liberal arts college in the Pacific Northwest, 148 males and 244 females, average age 18 years (Foster & LaForce, 1991). For each sample, partial correlations were computed for gender-related response …

Assisting Workers Displaced By Structural Change: An International Perspective, Duane E. Leigh
Assisting Workers Displaced By Structural Change: An International Perspective, Duane E. Leigh
Upjohn Press
Leigh begins by providing a summary of the evolution of labor market programs in seven industrialized countries: Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. He points out that a number of these nations are dealing with long-term unemployment by linking unemployment insurance benefits to participation in labor market programs, and that this is a requirement U.S. policy makers should examine closely. Leigh also performs informal cross-country evaluations of these countries' programs, focusing on policies he feels merit attention. A three-level active labor market program is then proposed for the U.S.
Permanent Job Loss And The U.S. System Of Financing Unemployment Insurance, Frank P.R. Brechling, Louise Laurence
Permanent Job Loss And The U.S. System Of Financing Unemployment Insurance, Frank P.R. Brechling, Louise Laurence
Upjohn Press
The authors reexamine the experience rating provisions in the U.S. UI system and look at its effects on both temporary layoffs and long-term permanent layoffs. For temporary layoffs, they propose a higher degree of experience rating through a restructuring of the tax code while eliminating administrative time lags between the payment of benefits and the resulting changes in taxes. Brechling and Laurence also propose experience rating as an effective means of internalizing the costs of the growing number of permanent layoffs, making the case that payroll taxes are not the ideal means of implementing experience rating in this situation. Program Applicants As A Comparison Group In Evaluating Training Programs: Theory And A Test, Stephen H. Bell, Larry L. Orr, John D. Blomquist, Glen George Cain
Program Applicants As A Comparison Group In Evaluating Training Programs: Theory And A Test, Stephen H. Bell, Larry L. Orr, John D. Blomquist, Glen George Cain
Upjohn Press
The authors begin with a thorough assessment of the many nonexperimental employment and training program evaluation techniques based on non-random comparison groups. These techniques typically use econometric methods to estimate the effects of employment and training programs by using comparison groups from non-program "external" sources. Then, recognizing the inherent drawbacks in these methods, Bell, Orr, Blomquist and Cain respond by reintroducing an evaluation method first implemented in the 1960s, the use of "internal" comparison groups consisting of nonparticipating program applicants. These groups include withdrawals, screen-outs and no-shows of the programs being evaluated in order to solve the selection bias problem. …

The Global Electronic Community: Modeling The Sociology Of Self-Organization, Joan Roca, William Ammentorp, Thomas Morgan
The Global Electronic Community: Modeling The Sociology Of Self-Organization, Joan Roca, William Ammentorp, Thomas Morgan
Library Services Publications
The revolution in telecommunications of the past decade has brought about fundamental changes in the patterns of professional communication. Internet and other electronic networks make it possible for geographically-dispersed individuals to engage in meaningful dialog concerning common problems. These exchanges result in a Global Electronic Community which is unique in human experience. This is a community that is truly self-organizing in that it can take on new forms momentarily. Consequently, it is a dynamic community with continually-changing membership and structure; a society populated with both human and electronic agents. It is, as a result, more complex in the roles its …

"A Friend To Go Between Them": Interpreters Among The Iroquois, 1664-1775, Nancy L. Hagedorn
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
In recent years, interest in early American Indian history and an emphasis on ethnohistorical methods have led to new approaches to the study of cultural contact in colonial America. Several scholars have used cross-cultural groups such as missionaries and white Indian captives as vehicles for analysis. Another group that moved relatively freely back and forth across the cultural divide was that of interpreters. From their intermediate position between European and Iroquois cultures, these men and women interpreted more than languages. Although linguistic skills were essential, successful mediation between Indians and Europeans also required a knowledge of the culture and customs …

Training Sociologists: Professional Socialization And The Emergence Of Career Aspirations, Bruce Keith, Helen A. Moore
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The individual and departmental factors affecting graduate students' professional socialization were studied by employing data from 309 PhD students in 16 graduate programs in sociology. Using Rosenbaum's tournament model of opportunity structures and aspects of Tinto's model of social psychological integration, this study examines students' access to initial funding, resources in the department, indicators of prior ability, current professional activities, mentoring processes, and social psychological factors for their effects on socialization into the academic profession. Access to initial funding and to mentoring have substantial effects on PhD students' professional socialization, but prove to be less than rational processes in the …
Television And Its Relationship To A Person's Character, Keri Phillips
Television And Its Relationship To A Person's Character, Keri Phillips
Master's Theses
The following study looked at the relationship between the types of television shows a person watches, either violent, neutral, or nonviolent, and his/her score on the Character Counts Questionnaire (CCQ), which measures a person's character and ethical values. Subjects were asked to complete the CCQ and rate on a five point bipolar scale, whether they enjoyed or did not enjoy watching the selected television shows. While using the CCQ, several problems were found and changes were made to overcome them. The most prevalent problem was that the original scoring method was so rigid it did not give a reflective measure …
American Terrorism And The Sociological Imagination In 1995: A Sociologist’S Commentary, Michael R. Hill
American Terrorism And The Sociological Imagination In 1995: A Sociologist’S Commentary, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
On Wednesday morning, April 19, 1995, a rented truck parked purposefully near the entrance to the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, exploded with extreme force, killing and wounding hundreds of people, including dozens of youngsters in a day care facility. The lethal explosion directly challenged the sovereignty and legitimacy of the United States government. The nation, our television sets reported, was in shock. How could such a terrible event occur in the United States? The television images, so much like frozen frames from a fantastic made-for-TV action-adventure movie, challenged our sensibilities and stung the national consciousness.
