Review Of This Fragile Land: A Natural History Of The Nebraska Sandhills By Paul A. Johnsgard, Paul G. Risser Aug 1995

Review Of This Fragile Land: A Natural History Of The Nebraska Sandhills By Paul A. Johnsgard, Paul G. Risser

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Books like this are rarely written. Today, most writings about natural features and charismatic landscapes tend to be of two types: those with subjective, generalized descriptions written for the layperson, or technical articles with great detail but little in the way of human emotion. This book, written by a professor who spent fifteen summers in the Nebraska Sandhills, presents sufficient technical detail to satisfy the professional, but at the same time conveys the images and emotions of the Sandhills plants, animals, and people.

About 50,000 square kilometers-one-fourth of Nebraska-are covered by the Sandhills, making this the largest area of sand …

Included among participants were lawyers, engineers, economists, ecologists, anthropologists, mediators, federal officials, and Native Americans who collectively represented a broad range of scholarly and applied expertise and viewpoints. This book is not a collection of papers by academics on the history and development of Indian …

Review Of Aboriginal Peoples In Urban Centres: Report Of The National Round Table On Aboriginal Urban Issues By Royal Commission On Aboriginal Peoples, Russel Lawrence Barsh Aug 1995

Review Of Aboriginal Peoples In Urban Centres: Report Of The National Round Table On Aboriginal Urban Issues By Royal Commission On Aboriginal Peoples, Russel Lawrence Barsh

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Months after Canada's most violent modern-day confrontation with Aboriginal peoples, the month-long standoff between Mohawk "Warriors" and Canadian troops at Kahnesatake, Quebec, in August 1990, the Conservative Government of Brian Mulroney announced the appointment of a Royal Commission to make recommendations for the complete overhaul of Aboriginal policy. Five years, hundreds of hearings and academic studies, and $C60 million later, the Royal Commission has yet to make its report. Jean Chretien's Liberal Government has already announced that it has its own program for Aboriginal "self-government," hinting that the long-awaited Royal Commission findings will be dead-on-arrival. The corpse will not be …

Review Of Accidental Archaeologist: Memoirs Of Jesse D. Jennings By Jesse D. Jennings, Ralph J. Hartley Aug 1995

Review Of Accidental Archaeologist: Memoirs Of Jesse D. Jennings By Jesse D. Jennings, Ralph J. Hartley

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

The history of twentieth-century archaeology as told by its early practitioners is finding an appreciative audience in a generation of anthropological archaeologists that has matured under the regulatory eye of federal environmental protective legislation. This book is the story of the life of one of the discipline's foremost practitioners. Although autobiographical in its organization, many of the book's chapters can be read as stand-alone accounts of Jesse Jennings's reflections on conducting archaeological investigations in the southeast, Plains, and desert west of North America, as well as in Polynesia and Guatemala.

A man who considers himself to have been "a minority …

Autocorrelation In Single-Subject Data: A Meta-Analytic View, Laura L. Methot Aug 1995

Autocorrelation In Single-Subject Data: A Meta-Analytic View, Laura L. Methot

Dissertations

Recent work by Huitema and McKean (1991, 1994a, 1994b, 1994c, in press) has shown that the most frequently used statistical methods for performing conventional time-series analyses lead to gross distortions of results when these approaches are applied in the context of the typical behavioral research study. Most of these problems could be avoided if researchers were aware that the time-series methods recommended in many areas are not generally needed. The appropriate evidence regarding the need for complex time-series methods requires a meta-analysis of the autocorrelation present in behavioral studies. The project involved: (a) sampling several hundred research articles published in …

Labor Income Indices Designed For Use In Contracts Promoting Income Risk Management, Robert J. Shiller, Ryan Schneider Aug 1995

Labor Income Indices Designed For Use In Contracts Promoting Income Risk Management, Robert J. Shiller, Ryan Schneider

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Labor income indices are created for groupings of individuals, using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. People are grouped by a clustering algorithm based on an estimated transition matrix between jobs, by education level, and by skill category. The groups are defined so that relatively few people move between them. For each of the groupings, we generate a labor income index using a hedonic repeated-measures regression methodology. Similarities between pairs of indices and between indices and individual labor incomes are described. It is argued that indices like those presented here might someday be used in settlement formulae in …

An Introduction To The Verbal System Of Central Dangaleat, Lawrence R. Burke Aug 1995

An Introduction To The Verbal System Of Central Dangaleat, Lawrence R. Burke

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an analysis of the verbal system of Central Dangaleat, an Eastern Chadic language spoken in central Chad. Following the general introduction in chapter 1, the second chapter provides a basic introduction to the phonological system of the Central Dangaleat verbal system, focusing especially on syllable structure and epenthesis, vowel harmony and the tone system. Special attention is given to the relationship between consonant quality and tone in the language. Chapters 3 through 7 attempt to relate the Central Dangaleat tense, aspect and mood system to the proposals concerning the development of aspectual categories in Chadic as a …

Testable Restrictions On The Equilibrium Manifold, Donald J. Brown, Rosa L. Matzkin Aug 1995

Testable Restrictions On The Equilibrium Manifold, Donald J. Brown, Rosa L. Matzkin

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We present a finite system of polynomial inequalities in unobservable variables and market data that observations on market prices, individual incomes and aggregate endowments must satisfy to be consistent with the equilibrium behavior of some pure trade economy. Quantifier elimination is used to derive testable propositions on finite data sets for the pure trade model.

The Utility And Usefulness Of An In-House Database: An Aid To Understand Student Ratings, Mark Tolley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this project is three fold:(a) a review of the literature regarding student ratings, (b) the creation of a student rating database and (c) the development of an applications manual to accompany the database. From a thorough review of the literature, this project identifies the utility and usefulness of student ratings as one element in the evaluation of instruction. The literature review addressed the following questions: (a) Do we need student ratings of instructors? (b) Can student rating data be used to improve instruction? (c) can we be sure that the data and the means by which they …

Moral Judgment In Abusive Relationships: Implications For Interventions, Robert Marshall Masterson Aug 1995

Moral Judgment In Abusive Relationships: Implications For Interventions, Robert Marshall Masterson

Graduate Theses

Kohlberg's Moral Judgment Interview and parallel dilemmas depicting abusive domestic situations were used to compare moral development of two groups of couples. Twenty men from a program for abusive men and their wives were compared to 20 couples selected by convenience sampling from university students, two church congregations, and friends. The Conflict Tactics Scale for couples was used to determine the validity of the responses of the male partner. No differences in Global Stage Scores were found between abusive or non-abusive men. None were found between genders. Weighted Average Scores on traditional Kohlberg stories and spousal abuse dilemmas were similar …

The Impact Of School Climate On Self-Reported Alcohol And Other Drug Use, Karen R. Humes Aug 1995

The Impact Of School Climate On Self-Reported Alcohol And Other Drug Use, Karen R. Humes

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of dimensions of the school climate upon twelfth grade self-reported alcohol, marijuana, and cigarette use. In order to do this, social bond theory and its elements of attachment, belief, and commitment were tested. Data involving peer pressure to use drugs, perception of school drug policy enforcement, and college boundness were utilized in examining their relationship with drug use.

The data which were chosen for this study involved 141 Michigan public school districts and were based on the responses of 17,211 high school seniors collected during the 1993-1994 school year. Due …

Planning For Change: Feminist Standpoint Epistemology Informing The Program Planning Process, Laura Nichols Aug 1995

Planning For Change: Feminist Standpoint Epistemology Informing The Program Planning Process, Laura Nichols

Masters Theses

This thesis examines the process by which social programs are developed and explores how feminist standpoint epistemology may inform the process. A peer education program developed for college women is used as an example to illustrate the planning process. Secondary data collection, focus groups and a self-administered survey were the research techniques utilized in this planning approach.

The specific steps involved in program planning are identified and explained based on the program planning process presented and literature about this topic. The thesis concludes by exploring how certain ideas in feminist standpoint epistemology can be applied to the planning process in …

Patterns Of "I Don't Know" Responses In Telephone Surveys, Christine Lewerenz Hinkle Aug 1995

Patterns Of "I Don't Know" Responses In Telephone Surveys, Christine Lewerenz Hinkle

Masters Theses

The question of how best to handle "don't know" responses continues to be a troublesome problem to survey researchers. There are no guidelines for handling "don't know" responses because little systematic investigation for the problem has been made. This research addresses the characteristics of those who answer "don't know" in social surveys. I am focusing on four independent variables, sex, age, income, and education. Included in this research will also be an independent variable of interviewer gender. The fact that most survey research does not record the sex of the interviewer has caused this research to be somewhat limited. I …
