Rich Devoss And The Girls - Orlando Sports, Richard C. Crepeau Nov 1995

Rich Devoss And The Girls - Orlando Sports, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Last week Larry Guest reported on the reluctance of the Orlando Magic to share this city with any other major league professional sports franchise. In the course of his column Guest quoted Magic owner Rich DeVoss as saying about his conversations with County Chairman Linda Chapin and Orlando Mayor Glenda Hood: "I talked to the girls and asked them how many sports dollars are there to go around in Orlando."

A Swamp In The Desert: Theory, Water Policy, And Malheur Lake Basin, Cristin R. Mandaville Nov 1995

A Swamp In The Desert: Theory, Water Policy, And Malheur Lake Basin, Cristin R. Mandaville

Dissertations and Theses

Two perspectives are debated in current United States water policy model development. One perspective calls for policy based on normative values, such as an environmental ethic. The second perspective calls for policy based on empirical, quantifiable values, for instance, economic benefits and costs. This theoretical debate arises from differing assumptions about what is problematic in contemporary water policy, and in turn gives rise to many water policy models. Developing such models ostensibly provides frameworks useful for developing real-world water policies. This paper proposes that these water policy models are not in fact useful frameworks for policy applications because the models …

Public Service Anouncements And The Fight Against Aids: A Survey Of Radio Broadcasters' Attitudes And Policies, Douglas J. Swanson Nov 1995

Public Service Anouncements And The Fight Against Aids: A Survey Of Radio Broadcasters' Attitudes And Policies, Douglas J. Swanson

Journalism

A pilot study surveyed radio broadcasters in Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas to further an understanding of their role as gatekeepers for public service announcements (PSA) to educate audiences about AIDS and bring about "safe" behavior. A total of 300 stations were in the sample. Respondents were asked to provide information about their stations and their stations' use of HIV/AIDS PSAs. Most broadcasters reported using HIV/AIDS PSAs (76.1%). About one-third of broadcasters who reported not using the PSAs claimed they had never been offered any such announcements to broadcast. Most respondents agreed that HIV/AIDS is a significant national and local …

The Efficacy Of St. Francis Halfway House Residential Treatment Services For Adults Diagnosed With Borderline Personality Disorder, Teri Dimond

Theses and Graduate Projects

Borderline Personality Disorder is difficult to treat, and diagnosed more prevalently in women. Individuals with this mental disorder are treated in a number of ways in Minnesota, including residential treatment services. This comparative study examines the effectiveness of residential treatment services for adults diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder at St. Francis Halfway House. In studying the effectiveness of this treatment modality, two variables; discharge to a less restrictive environment, and with staff approval, are explored to determine treatment success.

Breaking The Cycle: Self-Esteem And African American Youth, George B. Gill Nov 1995

Breaking The Cycle: Self-Esteem And African American Youth, George B. Gill

Theses and Graduate Projects

Self-esteem has been cited as a primary factor in how well or how poorly an individual functions in society. African American youth may be among those particularly susceptible to feelings of low selfesteem. This study attempted to measure if participation in a African American Self-Esteem (AASE) course would have a positive effect on the self-esteem of participants. The AASE course is a ten week education,/support group that focuses on African American history and culture. Twenty-eight junior and senior high African American students from the Minneapolis metro area participated. Their self-esteem levels were measured, they then participated in the AASE course …
