Influence Of Heater Orientation On Fluctuations In Steady-State Nucleate Boiling, William F. Osborne Nov 1995

Influence Of Heater Orientation On Fluctuations In Steady-State Nucleate Boiling, William F. Osborne

Dissertations and Theses

In observations of steady-state nucleate boiling, fluctuations in the temperature and heat flux might initially appear to be completely random. However, it was shown that, for a vertically mounted platinum wire in liquid nitrogen, the fluctuations about the steady-state exhibit an average counterclockwise circulation when the heat flux is plotted versus the superheat temperature. An area associated with the average circulation was proposed as a numerical measure of stability for steady-state nucleate boiling. The mechanisms for the generation of these fluctuations are thought to be the feedback of the bubbles rising past the wire and the differential heating and cooling …

John Rawls, Feminism, And The Gendered Self, Lori Kinder Macarthur Nov 1995

John Rawls, Feminism, And The Gendered Self, Lori Kinder Macarthur

Dissertations and Theses

John Rawls's theory of justice, which he calls "justice as fairness," has proven to be most influential with regard to the course of contemporary political theory. In both of Rawls's books, A Theory of Justice and Political Liberalism, his aim was to present a theoretically-compelling defense of deontological liberalism, and to present a set of principles by which to fairly order a just society. While Rawls's project has attracted a fair number of proponents over the years, it has also been a popular target for liberal and nonliberal critics alike. A recurrent theme among these criticisms has been an objection …

Prehistoric Native American Fisheries Of The Central California Coast, Kenneth W. Gobalet, Terry L. Jones Nov 1995

Prehistoric Native American Fisheries Of The Central California Coast, Kenneth W. Gobalet, Terry L. Jones

Social Sciences

Over 77,000 fish remains from 51 archaeological sites on the central California coast between San Mateo and San Luis Obispo counties, deposited between 6200 B.C. and A.D. 1830, were studied to assess prehistoric species distribution, diversity, and Native American fisheries. Remains were obtained from exposed rocky coastal sites, lagoon-estuaries at Elkhorn Slough and Morro Bay, and the freshwater drainages of the Pajaro and Salinas rivers. On the rocky coast, 58.4% of the remains represented large inshore species, 26.9% were small schooling species, and 11.8% were surfperches (family Embiotocidae). Large inshore species included rockfishes Sebastes spp., lingcod Ophiodon elongatus, kelp …

What I Know Now That I Wish They'd Told Me Back Then: A Time Capsule Of Advice From Baby Boomers To The Baby Busters Of Generation X, Don P. Diffine Ph.D. Nov 1995

What I Know Now That I Wish They'd Told Me Back Then: A Time Capsule Of Advice From Baby Boomers To The Baby Busters Of Generation X, Don P. Diffine Ph.D.

Belden Center Books

Consider this--if the fountain of youth is unattainable, wouldn't it be great to avoid being, as the Dutch say, "too soon old and too late smart?" After all, nobody gets a second chance to go through life again. Alas, we must learn from those who have been around the block a few more times than we have. We won't live long enough to make all their collective mistakes--as resourceful as we might be behind their backs.

Those wonderful voluntary participants interested in this writing project, most of whom had done a "heap of living," were encouraged to focus their wisdom …

Delivered at the Activating Your Firm's Service Culture Symposium (Phoenix), this speech outlines Pollard's theory of the corporate soul, which is most clearly defined as the people who make up the organization. The Ingram Vessel 38ct204: Intensive Survey & Excavation Of An Upland Rivercraft At Cheraw, South Carolina, Christopher F. Amer, Suzanne C. Linder, Mark M. Newell, William B. Barr

Research Manuscript Series

In 1993 and 1994 the Underwater Archaeology Division of the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology conducted an intensive survey of the remains of a small, wooden hulled craft in the Great Pee Dee River near Cheraw, South Carolina. The project was sponsored in part by the Cheraw Historical Society and partially funded by a grant from the South Carolina Humanities Council. The Ingram Vessel (38CT204), named after its discoverer Miller Ingram, lay overturned and largely buried beneath the river sediments and protected by a large mushroom-shaped rock just upstream of the site. The site was partially excavated and …

American Isolationism Versus The Global Marketplace, Murray L. Weidenbaum Nov 1995

American Isolationism Versus The Global Marketplace, Murray L. Weidenbaum

Murray Weidenbaum Publications

A growing paradox faces the United States. There is simultaneously a rise in support for isolationism alongside an increasing globalization of business and economic activity. Examined separately, both trends possess a certain logical appeal. After all, given the end of the Cold War, many Americans expect an increased focus on domestic issues, of which there are plenty. At the same time, a global marketplace based on international trade has arrived. This paper examines the tensions these two trends present when placed alongside one another.
