Private Interests Or Public Goods?: Dewey, Rugg, And Their Contemporary Allies On Corporate Involvement In Educational Reform Initiatives, Deron R. Boyles, Kathleen Knight Abowitz Jan 2000

Private Interests Or Public Goods?: Dewey, Rugg, And Their Contemporary Allies On Corporate Involvement In Educational Reform Initiatives, Deron R. Boyles, Kathleen Knight Abowitz

Educational Policy Studies Faculty Publications

In some ways, John Dewey lived through a time similar to what we now experience: the rise of corporate power in a historical moment of unsurpassed national wealth and consumer materialism, and the accompanying substantial influence of business interests in the structure, politics, and agendas of public school systems. Dewey’s writings in the first three decades of this century mark a kind of “wisdom of the elders,” offered by a public intellectual who experienced, at least in some form, the kind of tumultuous relationships we are currently witnessing between the economy and education.

Library Of Congress' Class L: Education, Table L7: An Expansion For Local Use, Judith Shelton Jan 2000

Library Of Congress' Class L: Education, Table L7: An Expansion For Local Use, Judith Shelton

University Library Faculty Publications

Table L7 provides ranges of Cutter numbers, with no directions for the allocation of the numbers within the ranges. For an extensive collection such as a library might assemble of its parent institution's output, more guidance is needed. Between normal institutional changes and multiple catalogers of varying degrees of expertise, the chances of maintaining a logical shelf arrangement over time become vanishingly small. This case study describes the problem that developed as the table was applied to the institutional publications of Georgia State University, and proposes an explicit expansion of Table L7 for local use as a solution. With suitable …

Oxidative Stress Resistance: A Robust Correlated Response To Selection In Extended Longevity Lines Of Drosophila Melanogaster?, Lawrence G. Harshman, Beth A. Haberer Jan 2000

Oxidative Stress Resistance: A Robust Correlated Response To Selection In Extended Longevity Lines Of Drosophila Melanogaster?, Lawrence G. Harshman, Beth A. Haberer

Lawrence G. Harshman Publications

Stress resistance is associated with longevity in Drosophila melanogaster and other model organisms used for genetic research. The present study tests for oxidative stress resistance in one set of lines selected for late-life reproduction and extended longevity. Both females and males from the selected lines were appreciably more resistant to oxidative stress than were flies from the control lines. A relative increase in oxidative stress resistance is a correlated response to selection in this laboratory selection experiment. Increased oxidative stress resistance appears to be a relatively robust correlated response to laboratory selection for late-life reproduction and extended longevity.

An Addendum To Harrington's Northern Salinan Place Names, Terry L. Jones, Betty Rivers, Andrea M. Maliarik, Terry L. Joslin, Douglas Alger Jan 2000

An Addendum To Harrington's Northern Salinan Place Names, Terry L. Jones, Betty Rivers, Andrea M. Maliarik, Terry L. Joslin, Douglas Alger

Social Sciences

Rivers and Jones (1993) reported the locations of 21 place names in the upper San Antonio Valley and adjacent coast of Monterey County, California, that were noted by Salinan speakers in John Peabody Harrington's field notes from 1922 to 1932. Surface reconnaissance and review of recently completed archaeological survey reports have led to the identification of 11 additional Salinan places in the upper San Antonio Valley and refinement in the location of three others. Archaeological sites in the vicinity of named places tentatively suggest that Salinan settlements are marked by clusters of small middens and bedrock mortars.

The Relationship Between Gender Social Identity And Support For Feminism, Shawn Meghan Burn, Roger Aboud, Carey Moyles Jan 2000

The Relationship Between Gender Social Identity And Support For Feminism, Shawn Meghan Burn, Roger Aboud, Carey Moyles

Psychology and Child Development

This study is an application of social identity theory to feminist consciousness and activism. For women, strong gender identifications may enhance support for equality struggles, whereas for men, they may contribute to backlashes against feminism. University students (N = 276), primarily Euroamerican, completed a measure of gender self-esteem (GSE, that part of one’s self-concept derived from one’s gender), and two measures of feminism. High GSE in women and low GSE in men were related to support for feminism. Consistent with past research, women were more supportive of feminism than men, and in both genders, support for feminist ideas was greater …

Heterosexuals' Use Of 'Fag' And 'Queer' To Deride One Another: A Contributor To Heterosexism And Stigma, Shawn Meghan Burn Jan 2000

Heterosexuals' Use Of 'Fag' And 'Queer' To Deride One Another: A Contributor To Heterosexism And Stigma, Shawn Meghan Burn

Psychology and Child Development

This paper is on heterosexuals’ use of words such as "fag" and "queer" to refer to one another in an insulting manner. This behavior perpetuates heterosexism and the stigmatization of gays. Two hundred and fifty-seven university students (73% Euro-American) served as participants. Males exhibited more anti-gay prejudice and anti-gay behavior than females. Heterosexual males frequently used words such as "fag" and "queer" to put one another down. Anti-homosexual prejudice was predictive of anti-gay behavior. However, approximately half of those who engaged in the behavior were not strongly anti-homosexual. For these individuals, the behavior may win approval from their social group. …

The Effects Of Smoking Laws On Seating Allocations Of Restaurants, Bars, And Taverns, John Dunham, Michael L. Marlow Jan 2000

The Effects Of Smoking Laws On Seating Allocations Of Restaurants, Bars, And Taverns, John Dunham, Michael L. Marlow

Economics

Supporters of smoking laws often argue that they do not harm restaurants, bars, and taverns and may even raise their profits. Opponents argue that owners cater to customer preferences regarding smoking and that laws mandating specific smoking policies will therefore negatively impact profits of some firms. This article tests hypotheses regarding how smoking laws affect seating allocations, using data from a nationwide survey of restaurant and bar owners. The empirical evidence indicates that smoking laws exert no significant effect on seating allocations. Firms are shown to allocate greater shares of seating to nonsmoking use when customers exhibit stronger preferences for …

Risk Aversion And The Investment Horizon: A New Perspective On The Time Diversification Debate, Sanjiv Jaggia, Satish Thosar Jan 2000

Risk Aversion And The Investment Horizon: A New Perspective On The Time Diversification Debate, Sanjiv Jaggia, Satish Thosar

Economics

Investment managers generally subscribe to the principle of time diversification. This implies that a larger portion of the portfolio should be devoted to risky assets as the investment horizon increases. In contrast, academics have shown that for investors with utility functions characterized by constant relative risk aversion, the optimal asset-allocation strategy is independent of the investment horizon. The relative risk avers ion in these studies is assumed to be constant both with respect to wealth as well as investment horizon. We suggest a utility function that explicitly captures the notion that individuals are more risk tolerant when the investment horizon …

The Financial Impact Of Animal Related Phosphorus Management On Vermont Dairy Farms, Alyssa Dodd, Catherine Halbrendt, Charles F. Nicholson Jan 2000

The Financial Impact Of Animal Related Phosphorus Management On Vermont Dairy Farms, Alyssa Dodd, Catherine Halbrendt, Charles F. Nicholson

Agribusiness

Excessive phosphorus loading has been identified as the primary cause of decreasing water quality in Lake Champlain. Dairy farms are the major source of phosphorus pollution to the lake and are targeted to reduce phosphorus run-off. The goal of this research is to determine the farm-level financial impact of phosphorus management on different sizes of Vermont dairy farms. Farm financial performance following implementation of manure management is simulated by farm size (60 cows, 150 cows, and 350 cows) over a ten-year time horizon using the Farm Level Income and Policy Simulation Modeling System (FLIPSim). Results indicate that implementation of Milking …

The Space Of Jumping Emerging Patterns And Its Incremental Maintenance, Jinyan Li, Kotagiri Ramamohanarao, Guozhu Dong Jan 2000

The Space Of Jumping Emerging Patterns And Its Incremental Maintenance, Jinyan Li, Kotagiri Ramamohanarao, Guozhu Dong

Kno.e.sis Publications

The concept of jumping emerging patterns (JEPs) has been proposed to describe those discriminating features which only occur in the positive training instances but do not occur in the negative class at all; JEPs have been used to construct classifiers which generally provide better accuracy than the state-of-the-art classifiers such as C4.5. The algorithms for maintaining the space of jumping emerging patterns (JEP space) are presented in this paper. We prove that JEP spaces satisfy the property of convexity. Therefore JEP spaces can be concisely represented by two bounds: consisting respectively of the most general elements and the most specific …

Life Tomorrow: Living Through The Redevelopment Of The Heartside Area, Mackenzi Anne Huyser Jan 2000

Life Tomorrow: Living Through The Redevelopment Of The Heartside Area, Mackenzi Anne Huyser

Masters Theses

The Heartside area is located in the central city of Grand Rapids and is bounded by the streets of Fulton, Wealthy, Ionia and Lafayette. The neighborhood has seen a number of developmental changes in the last seven years. These changes include structural changes in buildings and a change in the clientele who visit and live in the area. The development of the VanAndel Arena, in 1995, brought many new restaurants and stores into the neighborhood. An area occupied by vacant buildings, homeless shelters, and limited growth, Heartside has seen a rapid, intense period of redevelopment. The current residents in the …

Contracts And Costs In A Corporate/Government System Dynamics Network: A United States Case, F. Gregory Hayden, Steven R. Bolduc Jan 2000

Contracts And Costs In A Corporate/Government System Dynamics Network: A United States Case, F. Gregory Hayden, Steven R. Bolduc

Department of Economics: Faculty Publications

Social scientists have come to understand that society is a set of integrated values, beliefs, institutions, technology, and ecological systems as explicitly laid out in Figure 1 (Hayden 1988, 1997). Societal integration and organization takes place through the on—going processing of overlapping institutions and their organizations. The components of transorganizational frameworks, as demonstrated in Figure 1, create and structure the networks within which organizations such as business corporations and government agencies function. “Trans” as used in this sense means across. Across organizational networks normative criteria are provided by social beliefs, technology, and ecological systems (Hayden, 1998). From basic criteria, numerous …

Towards Establishing A Yardstick For Measuring Student Research Article Productivity In Communication Studies, George W. Musambira Jan 2000

Towards Establishing A Yardstick For Measuring Student Research Article Productivity In Communication Studies, George W. Musambira

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article aims to develop a yardstick for evaluating student research productivity based on the number of articles the students published in 24 journals in communication studies. While previous research has emphasized the importance of beginning to publish early in one's career, there is little empirical guidance regarding the standards of a good take off speed while one is still a student. Based on the averages provided in this study, students, their advisors, mentors and administrators who evaluate and hire students in academia can set and implement particular goals. Moreover, the article provides averages in both fractional points and frequency …

Is Boyer Misguided Or Misused? The Scholarship Of Confusion, Rubin M. Alan Jan 2000

Is Boyer Misguided Or Misused? The Scholarship Of Confusion, Rubin M. Alan

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article analyzes the views of several authors concerning the concept of scholarship. In the book Scholarship Reconsidered, Ernest Boyer argued that scholarship requires a broad intellectual foundation and that faculty talent should be celebrated rather than restrict. While Carole Barbato argued that the scholarship of integration can be equally innovative, as it suggests new ways to approach, interpret, integrate and challenge older findings and assumptions. And Rozell Duncan and Mary Anne Higgins summarized two case studies whereby communication faculty engaged in the scholarship of application with a government agency and area farmers.

Multimedia As Persuasive Agent: Using Visual Metaphors To Establish The Rhetorical Agenda In A Communication Department Video, Sarah R. Stein Jan 2000

Multimedia As Persuasive Agent: Using Visual Metaphors To Establish The Rhetorical Agenda In A Communication Department Video, Sarah R. Stein

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article emphasizes the significance of computer-mediated communication technologies to communication studies based on a video document made by the communication department of North Carolina State University. The goals for the production of a video included promoting the Communication Department within and outside the university, educating viewers' as to the study of communication and its role in an information society, and advocating implicitly for the benefits of umbrella departments. The development of visual metaphors came as an unexpected by-product of grappling with those three challenges. Making the video highlighted the tension that exists between technological demand and communication imperatives.
