Review Of The Caddo Chiefdoms: Caddo Economics And Politics, 700-1835 By David La Vere, Helen Hornbeck-Tanner Jan 2000

Review Of The Caddo Chiefdoms: Caddo Economics And Politics, 700-1835 By David La Vere, Helen Hornbeck-Tanner

Great Plains Quarterly

The Caddos, to use their American-devised collective name, actually lived "from time immemorial" on the southeastern margin of the Great Plains. In the sixteenth century, their aboriginal territory of fifteen or twenty communities, with dispersed settlements, encompassed a vast area surrounding the middle course of the Red River in the present states of Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas. As the most western and longest-surviving of the great Mississippian states, Caddos provide a vantage point for viewing Great Plains history over many centuries. La Vere's interpretation of this lengthy saga appears to emphasize the long-lasting chiefdoms whose end he correlates with …

Changing The Pitch Americanism, Athleticism, And The Development Of Legion Baseball In Nebraska, Kent M. Krause Jan 2000

Changing The Pitch Americanism, Athleticism, And The Development Of Legion Baseball In Nebraska, Kent M. Krause

Great Plains Quarterly

Since its inception in 1928, American Legion Junior Baseball has been popular in Nebraska. Although originally started to advance the Legion's ideological agenda of Americanism, the primary factor in the success of Junior Baseball has been an active level of support from the citizens and businesses in the state's communities. The Legion's program acquired and maintained such support because of the variety of functions it served in towns and cities across the state. First and foremost, Junior Baseball teams were important sources of civic pride to Nebraskans who enthusiastically backed their local boys. The program also provided local businesses with …

Exploring The Kurdish Population In The Turkish Context, Ibrahim Sirkeci

Ibrahim Sirkeci

This paper explores the Kurdish population as an ethnic minority within the Turkish context. In this regard, it is the first investigation of the Kurdish population in Turkey to be based on a nation-wide representative survey supplemented by other data sources and previous studies. This study analyses the demographic patterns and related socio-economic characteristics of Turkey’s Kurdish population and compares the findings with the entire population of Turkey. The results indicate that the Kurdish population is currently in a pre-transitional stage in terms of the demographic patterns and constitutes with regard to both its demography and socio-economic characteristics the least …

The Advent Of The Prosperous Society: The Rise Of The Guardian State And Structural Change In The World Economy, Giulio M. Gallarotti Jan 2000

The Advent Of The Prosperous Society: The Rise Of The Guardian State And Structural Change In The World Economy, Giulio M. Gallarotti

Giulio M Gallarotti

Over the last century there has been a fundamental change in the economic orientation of industrially advanced democracies, and this has had a pervasive impact on both their macroeconomies and their international economic relations. Put more starkly, changing expectations about prosperity and the role of government as an economic guardian have fundamentally reshaped the economic geography of the world economy. In humorous tone, it might even be called a cowardly new world, one in which societies refuse to brave the vagaries of unrestrained markets. This argument presents an alternative to traditional explanations of economics processes and relations in which scholars …

From Military Politization To Militarization Of Power In Guinea-Conakry, Mohamed S. Camara Jan 2000

From Military Politization To Militarization Of Power In Guinea-Conakry, Mohamed S. Camara

Mohamed S. Camara

This historical analysis of state-military society relationship in Guinea focuses on Sékou Touré's political survival due in part to his political indoctrination of an army constantly involved in Pan-African battles and overshadowed by the National Militia. It also addresses this army's transition from a single-party regime to multiparty politics via a bloodless coup. Particularly underlined in the discussion, Touré's intelligent exploitation of Cold War localized manueuvers lays the ground for a conceptual framework envisioning the Guinean military as a revolutionary army. This theoretical argument is made in light of the sociological debate on the military and politics as sustained by …

Reflexive Autopoietic Dissipative Special Systems Theory, Kent D. Palmer Jan 2000

Reflexive Autopoietic Dissipative Special Systems Theory, Kent D. Palmer

Kent D. Palmer

A newly discovered approach to extending General Systems Theory as defined by George Klir through a set of Special Systems is described. General Systems Theory is distinguished from the theory of Meta-systems. Then, a hinge of three special systems is identified between systems and meta-systems. These special systems are defined by algebraic analogies. Anomalous physical phenomena are specified that exemplify the structures defined by the algebraic analogies. The extraordinary efficacious properties of these special systems are explained. These include ultra-efficiency and ultra-effectiveness. These three special systems are called dissipative, autopoietic, and reflexive. They are anomalous within general systems theory and …

Political Structures And Chinese Business Connections In The Malay World: A Historical Perspective, Robert Cribb Jan 2000

Political Structures And Chinese Business Connections In The Malay World: A Historical Perspective, Robert Cribb

Robert Cribb

The prominence of ethnic Chinese among successful business owners in Southeast Asia is intriguing. Many have sought the secret of Chinese success in Chinese characteristics. This chapter suggests that Chinese success rests rather on the specific historical circumstances in Southeast Asia during the colonial period and after. A series of crony-like arrangements has been possible because political conditions permitted them,

Democracy And Multiculturalism, Raphael Cohen-Almagor, Will Kymlicka Jan 2000

Democracy And Multiculturalism, Raphael Cohen-Almagor, Will Kymlicka

raphael cohen-almagor

One of the most pressing issues facing liberal democracies today is the politicization of ethnocultural diversity. Minority cultures are demanding greater public recognition of their distinctive identities, and greater freedom and opportunity to retain and develop their distinctive cultural practices. In response to these demands, new and creative mechanisms are being adopted in many countries for accommodating difference. This paper discusses some of the issues raised by these demands, focusing in particular on the difficulties, which arise in North America and Israel when the minority seeking accommodation is illiberal. Historically, liberal democracies have hoped that the protection of basic individual …

Malaysian Culture And The Leadership Of Organisations: A Globe Study, Norma Mansor Jan 2000

Malaysian Culture And The Leadership Of Organisations: A Globe Study, Norma Mansor

Norma Mansor

Leadership behavior significantly influences the performance of companies and the motivation of people. However, much of our knowledge regarding the characteristics of effective leaders is based on research carried out in Western countries. To redress this imbalance, the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) Research Program was set up in the early 1990s to investigate leadership behaviors in over 60 countries around the world, including Malaysia. Much cross-cultural research focuses on identifying differences between cultures. In contrast, the results of the GLOBE research indicate that a number of attributes associated with charismatic/transformational leadership are universally endorsed by all cultures …

Trench Warfare Between 1776 And 1918, Samuel W. Bettwy Jan 2000

Trench Warfare Between 1776 And 1918, Samuel W. Bettwy

Samuel W Bettwy

In large part, the devastation of WWI on human life can be blamed on trench warfare and the failure of European military observers, especially the British and the French, to recognize the need to adapt offensive strategies. Several instances of trench warfare appeared from the eighteenth century until the advent of WWI, but the Europeans consistently discounted its significance. They regarded the use of trench warfare during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars in the United States to be an American phenomenon that was inapplicable to European strategies.

Homosexuality As Contagion: From The Well Of Loneliness To The Boy Scouts, Nancy J. Knauer Jan 2000

Homosexuality As Contagion: From The Well Of Loneliness To The Boy Scouts, Nancy J. Knauer

Nancy J. Knauer

In the political arena, there are currently two central and competing views of homosexuality. Pro-family organizations, working from a contagion model of homosexuality, contend that homosexuality is an immoral, unhealthy, and freely chosen vice. Many pro-gay organizations espouse an identity model of homosexuality under which sexual orientation is an immutable, unchosen, and benign characteristic. Both pro-family and pro-gay organizations believe that to define homosexuality is to control its legal and political status. This sometimes bitter debate regarding the nature of same-sex desire might seem like an exceedingly contemporary development. However, the ex-gay media blitz of 2000 represents only the latest …
