The Role Of Classification In Knowledge Represantation And Discovery, Barbara H. Kwasnik Jan 2000

The Role Of Classification In Knowledge Represantation And Discovery, Barbara H. Kwasnik

Barbara H. Kwasnik

The link between classification and knowledge is explored. Classification schemes have properties that enable the representation of entities and relationships in structures that reflect knowledge of the domain being classified. The strengths and limitations of four classificatory approaches are described in terms of their ability to reflect, discover, and create new knowledge. These approaches are hierarchies, trees, paradigms, and faceted analysis. Examples are provided of the way in which knowledge and the classification process affect each other.

The Ted Trueblood Collection At Boise State University : A Guide To The Papers Of One Of America's Foremost Outdoor Writers And Conservationists, Mary Carter-Hepworth, Sarah B. Davis, Alan Virta

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ted Trueblood (1913-1982) loved to write about the outdoors almost as much as he loved the outdoors itself. Raised on a family farm in the southwestern corner of Idaho, Trueblood made a living by writing and taking pictures of the things he liked to do best -hunting, fishing, camping, and cooking in the great outdoors. From his home in Idaho, he contributed hundreds of articles to Field & Stream and other outdoor journals, edited several book-length anthologies of his work, and, as the years went by, played an evermore influential role in the conservation and environmental movements in the American …

The Racialization Of Sexuality: The Queer Case Of Jeffrey Dahmer, Ian Barnard Jan 2000

The Racialization Of Sexuality: The Queer Case Of Jeffrey Dahmer, Ian Barnard

English Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"In this article I read media and subcultural representations of Jeffrey Dahmer, the white male U.S. serial killer who gained notoriety in the late 1980s for having sex with and then murdering and dismembering men of color in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My aim is to show the extent to which the degree of Dahmer's homosexualization in a particular representation determines Dahmer' s thinking and actions in the sphere of race, and to suggest how spiraling efforts to separate race from sexuality in the Dahmer case only further intricate the two analytic axes."

Presence And Television., M. Lombard, R. D. Reich, M. E. Grabe, Cheryl C. Bracken

Communication Faculty Publications

Film and a number of emerging entertainment technologies offer media consumers an illusion of nonmediation known as presence. To investigate the possibility that television can evoke presence, 65 undergraduate students were shown brief examples of rapid point-of-view movement from commercially available videotapes on a television with either a small screen (12 inches [30.5 cm], measured diagonally) or a large screen (46 inches [116.8 cm]). Participants' responses were measured via a questionnaire and a computer-based recording of arousal (electrodermal activity). Viewers of both televisions reported an enjoyable sense of physical movement, excitement, involvement, and a sense of participation. Furthermore, as predicted, …

in price without incurring a tax liability. The previous law was critiqued as detrimental to cities by promoting out-migration to higher-priced homes; it was asserted that the requirement that sellers buy a home equal to or greater than the value of the one they sold to defer tax liability obstructed movement down in price. This study asked whether movement down in price increased in four Ohio cities after the law was changed and whether movement out of the central cities decreased and movement in from the suburbs increased. Statistically significant change in movement down was found in only one city. …

The Cleveland Charrette On Sustainable Urban Environments: Elevating The Stature Of Urban Redevelopment, Thomas Bier, Ziona Austrian Jan 2000

The Cleveland Charrette On Sustainable Urban Environments: Elevating The Stature Of Urban Redevelopment, Thomas Bier, Ziona Austrian

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

The main focus of this charrette -- the stature of urban redevelopment relative to suburban "greenfield" development -- was epitomized by two Cleveland-area newspaper items (see Appendix A). One item announced an $850,000 federal grant to a suburb located at the rural fringe of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The grant from the Economic Development Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce was for construction of a road that would open 250 acres of virgin land for industrial development.

Best Practices In Workforce Development: A Chamber Of Commerce Perspective, Patricia Burgess Jan 2000

Best Practices In Workforce Development: A Chamber Of Commerce Perspective, Patricia Burgess

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

Changes in the economy--at the local, regional, state, and national levels--as well as technological advances have altered how and where people work, which has brought attention to the issue of workforce development. Many public and private entities, Chambers of Commerce among them, now engage in some form of workforce development. This report examines a number of such efforts to determine the “best practices” of workforce development for Chambers of Commerce. This report first considers the complex world of workforce development. The workforce consists of several distinct sub-populations: existing workers, new entrants, the unemployed, and the underemployed. Each has its own …
