Silicon Valley Reinvents The Company Town, Jan English-Lueck
Silicon Valley Reinvents The Company Town, Jan English-Lueck
Faculty Publications, Anthropology
California's Silicon Valley, famous for its innovative high-technology corporations, makes an ideal laboratory for exploring certain cultural inventions. It is a bellwether for a particular kind of social order—one dominated by work. In anthropology we encounter many frameworks through which life is organized—kinship, religion, and politics. Work is another lens through which life can be filtered. People may move to California for the weather, but they go to Silicon Valley to work. High-technology work draws on a global pool of talent and shifting skills that creates a culturally complex community. Migrants to Silicon Valley bring and enact an image of …

High Speed Access: Micro Radio, Action, And Activism On The Internet, Ted M. Coopman
Faculty Publications
During the spring and summer of 1999, the Low Power Radio Service Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) recently drew a record number of responses. Several thousand people from all over the country participated in what has traditionally been the purview of major corporations and institutions, including 1120 individuals who signed the Micro Radio Empowerment Coalition comments. This paper examines that response and its implications for the micro radio and other activist movements. The Internet played an important role not only in filing responses, but in drafting and signing responses as well. For example, the …

Perceived Risk Of Aids Among Prisoners Following Educational Intervention, Angela D. Crews, Randy Martin
Perceived Risk Of Aids Among Prisoners Following Educational Intervention, Angela D. Crews, Randy Martin
Criminal Justice Faculty Research
A pre/post quasi-experimental design was used to assess the impact of one state's AIDS education program on male (N = 75) and female (N= 65) inmates' perceived risk of HIV infection on the street and in prison. Post-test only comparison groups of male and female inmates were evaluated to control for the threat of testing. T-tests for paired samples were used to determine whether any significant changes occurred within groups (male & female), and t-tests for independent samples were used between groups to determine whether males or females experienced the greatest magnitude of change. Multiple regression analyses explored the …
An Effect Of The Medium In News Stories: “The Pictures In Our Heads”, Stephen D. Cooper
An Effect Of The Medium In News Stories: “The Pictures In Our Heads”, Stephen D. Cooper
Communications Faculty Research
This study used an experimental design to test for a channel effect in news stories. Four television news stories were recorded off-air, then the narrations were transcribed to form a print news story containing the same words; the broadcast video and the print story were the two treatment levels. Subjects received the stories in one of the treatment levels, and were asked to judge the blameworthiness or praiseworthiness of the actors named in the story. Logistic regressions could predict with substantial accuracy the medium in which subjects had received the story from these judgments, indicating a channel effect on their …
A Critique Of Functionalist And Rhetorical Social Movement Theory: A Case Study Of China's 1989 Democracy Movement, Lia M. Veenendaal
A Critique Of Functionalist And Rhetorical Social Movement Theory: A Case Study Of China's 1989 Democracy Movement, Lia M. Veenendaal
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Current Communication-based social movement theory provides an excellent framework for analyzing social movements at a superficial level, but it neglects to include one important aspect that influences social movements – the culture in which a social movement takes place. The dominant theories used to evaluate social movements are written with a Western, North-American bias and thus are inadequate tools for explaining social movements that occur in other cultures. This work uses a non-Western social movement – China's 1989 Democracy Movement – as a case study to demonstrate the Western bias that Communication-based social movement theory holds, as well as to …
Putting Objectivity To The Test: A Study Of How The Kurdish/Turkish Issue Is Represented In The News, Jennifer L. Valorose
Putting Objectivity To The Test: A Study Of How The Kurdish/Turkish Issue Is Represented In The News, Jennifer L. Valorose
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Although the public generally thinks of the news media as sources of factual, complete and objective information, due to the routines of production through which journalists are trained to use to present and gather news, they cannot be objective. The sources journalists rely on for information, and the choices they make in deciding what is newsworthy and how to frame stories influences what and how information is portrayed to the public. Thus, the media can unintentionally influence the way in which audiences understand the events and the knowledge they have to question the decisions being made. Studies have shown that …
Narratives Of Those Who Were Labeled Mentally Ill Due To Sexual Orientation, Michelle Gricus
Narratives Of Those Who Were Labeled Mentally Ill Due To Sexual Orientation, Michelle Gricus
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Prior to the printing of the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) in 1980, mental health practitioners who treated homosexual clients were encouraged by the American Psychiatric Association to define these individuals as mentally ill. The label of mental illness had lasting, damaging effects on many of the people who were categorized mentally ill because of their homosexual orientation. The purpose of this exploratory, qualitative study was to examine the impact of being labeled mentally ill due to sexual orientation from the perspective of labeling and ecological theories. The study showed that the ability …

Identifying Sources Of Prehistoric Turquoise In North America: Problems And Implications For Interpreting Social Organization, Frances Joan Mathien
Identifying Sources Of Prehistoric Turquoise In North America: Problems And Implications For Interpreting Social Organization, Frances Joan Mathien
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Well-made turquoise beads are rare in North American archaeological sites, and the prehistoric sources of turquoise are limited. Mining the turquoise, manufacturing the bead, and using it as part of a bracelet or necklace involve numerous human interactions to transport the raw material from its source to the place where it is finally found in an archaeological context. Accurate identification of turquoise sources affects our interpretation of prehistoric behavior and is the focus of this paper.
The Krobo And Bodom, Kirk Stanfield
The Krobo And Bodom, Kirk Stanfield
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Certain relatively large beads, almost always found in Ghana, have come to be called "bodom" by bead traders, collectors, and researchers. Most students of this bead believe it is the product of the Krobo powder-glass industry proliferating today in southeastern Ghana. Upon closer inspection, however, there appear to be two distinct groups of bodom that we may, for convenience, call "old" and "new." While the new bodom are definitely made in Ghana today, using techniques that have been observed and documented, the old bodom are substantially different in enough ways to suggest that they were made elsewhere by other methods. …
Annamese Orders: Precious Metal, Tassels, And Beads, John Sylvester Jr.
Annamese Orders: Precious Metal, Tassels, And Beads, John Sylvester Jr.
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Over the centuries, beads have been used for myriad purposes but a seemingly unique application is their use as components of several types of Annamese orders. Now known as Vietnam, the State of Annam issued a number of civil awards during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Four of these—khahn, boi, tien, and bai—were made of precious materials and incorporated bead strands and tassels in their composition. The khanh was reinstated as the second-ranking civil order of the Republic of Vietnam in 1957.
Stone Beads And Sealstones From The Mycenaean Tholos Tomb At Nichoria, Greece, Nancy C. Wilkie
Stone Beads And Sealstones From The Mycenaean Tholos Tomb At Nichoria, Greece, Nancy C. Wilkie
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Stone beads and engraved sealstones are among the most common grave goods that accompany Mycenaean burials. At Nichoria in the southwestern Peloponnese of Greece, a tholos tomb, presumably the burial place of the local elite at the site, had been plundered more than once in antiquity before being investigated by archaeologists. Nonetheless, it produced numerous stone beads of rock crystal, amethyst, carnelian, agate, and "steatite." Eleven sealstones, most of which were heirlooms when placed in the tomb, were also found among the disturbed burial offerings.
Man-In-The-Moon Beads, Michele Lorenzini, Karlis Karklins
Man-In-The-Moon Beads, Michele Lorenzini, Karlis Karklins
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
The unique and memorable design of man-in-the-moon beads has intrigued researchers over the years. These distinctive beads were identified in the 1960s by George Quimby as being chronologically diagnostic of Middle Historic Period sites (1670-1760) in the western Great Lakes region. The present study more clearly defines both the temporal and geographical instances of man-in-the-moon beads while taking into account possible cultural and historical implications. This project has led to the compilation of information regarding many specimens previously unknown to most researchers.
The Stone Bead Industry Of Southern India, Peter Francis Jr.
The Stone Bead Industry Of Southern India, Peter Francis Jr.
BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers
Although previously unrecognized, South India was once home to a major stone-beadmaking industry. At its zenith in the early centuries A.D., it exported beads eastward to other parts of Asia and westward to the Roman Empire. South Indian gems were of such importance to the Roman West that the region deserves the title of "Treasure Chest of the Ancient World." Research has identified the probable sources of nearly all the raw materials used, the lapidary centers, and the trade routes over which the finished beads would have traveled. Additionally, it has revealed that the principal participants in the industry were …
