Survey Of Existing I&R Services And A Nebraska 211 System Cost/Benefit Analysis Jan 2000

Survey Of Existing I&R Services And A Nebraska 211 System Cost/Benefit Analysis

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

In June, 1999, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (NHHSS) and the United Way of the Midlands requested that the University of Nebraska Public Policy Center coordinate a feasibility study of a statewide Information and Referral (I&R) system for health and human services. Because several I&R systems around the country make use of the 2-1-1 three digit number for I&R information, and there are a number of states investigating reserving 211 for statewide I&R services, this report uses the 211 nomenclature although there has been no state Public Service Commission designation of 211 for this purpose in Nebraska. …

Analysis And Direction For The Changing World Of Breakfast Cereal Advertising: A Content Analysis Of 1998-99 Television Advertisements, Megan Ann Lane

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This investigation sought to build on past content analysis of children-focused advertising to better understand how advertisers have responded to the changing television advertising market. It is important because little attention has been paid to the effects of cable specialization and FCC regulations on the methods and appeals used in children-focused advertising.

The Victimization Of Juvenile Prostitutes In Ethiopia, Kevin Lalor Jan 2000

The Victimization Of Juvenile Prostitutes In Ethiopia, Kevin Lalor

Articles

This paper quantifies the victimisation experienced by 30 juvenile prostitutes in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Seventy three per cent had been raped at least once and ninety three per cent had been beaten in the course of their work. Only 50% used contraception, resulting in a pregnancy rate of 37%. Findings indicate that prostitution is a highly victimogenic lifestyle, fostered by conditions of extreme deprivation. Policy and practice implications are discussed.

The Promotion Of Women Within The Irish Armed Forces, Tom Clonan Jan 2000

The Promotion Of Women Within The Irish Armed Forces, Tom Clonan

Books/Book chapters

The Promotion of Female Personnel Within the Irish Armed Forces The aim of this study, to critically examine the status and roles assigned female personnel in the PDF, has been addressed in a number of ways. The role of women in the PDF has been examined in chapter seven, in terms of the deployment policies and practices as promulgated by the military authorities. The pattern of women’s employment within a gender division of labour was charted through a number of unit audits. The women’s attitudes to this pattern of employment and their aspirations in this respect were also assessed through …

The Training Environment Of The Irish Defence Forces:Integrated Training, Bullying And Sexual Harassment, Tom Clonan

Books/Book chapters

The training environment of the Irish Defence Forces: integrated training and bullying in the workplace In this chapter I will refer to recruit and cadet training within the defence forces in light of international trends in integrated training. Following the consideration of ‘commitment’ in terms of numbers of women recruited to the organisation in chapter five, this chapter assesses the “education” component of the setting (Reskin and Padavic, 1994). Through an examination of archival data (syllabi of training, training policy etc) and the data obtained at interview, an assessment of the PDF’s equality of opportunity agenda as it applies to …

The Psychology Of Global Climate Change, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski Jan 2000

The Psychology Of Global Climate Change, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

In its attempt to address the threat of global climate change, society has struggled to reach a consensus regarding the need for preventive measures. Professor Rachlinski describes the threat of global climate change as a unique commons dilemma and explains that various psychological phenomena of judgment render it unlikely that society will be able to respond effectively to the threat. After considering the effects of biased assimilation, loss aversion, and other psychological processes, the author explains that an innovative approach is necessary to properly address the dilemma of global climate change.

Specifically, the author examines the prospect of governmental intervention …

Infant Imitation Of Peer And Adult Models: Evidence For A Peer Model Advantage, Bridget O. Ryalls, Robina E. Gul, Kenneth R. Ryalls Jan 2000

Infant Imitation Of Peer And Adult Models: Evidence For A Peer Model Advantage, Bridget O. Ryalls, Robina E. Gul, Kenneth R. Ryalls

Psychology Faculty Publications

The imitation behavior of 30 infants, ages 14 to 18 months, were studied using both peer and adult models in an elicited imitation paradigm. Infants watched either a peer or an adult model perform four 3-step sequences (Le., put teddy to bed). Imitation was measured immediately after modeling and 1 week later. Results indicated significant memory for the sequences both immediately after modeling and 1 week later (compared with baseline performance). In addition, children in the peer model group outperformed children in the adult model group at both test times. The implications of these findings are discussed.

The Cognitive-Initiative Account Of Depression-Related Impairments In Memory, Paula T. Hertel Jan 2000

The Cognitive-Initiative Account Of Depression-Related Impairments In Memory, Paula T. Hertel

Psychology Faculty Research

The many and diverse interpretations of the word control make it clear that control constitutes a fundamental concern in most areas of psychology. In an illustration of this diversity, I described my interest in controlled uses of memory at a social gathering; my new acquaintances, without realizing the non sequitur, subsequently raised issues about self control and loss of control-issues much more relevant to their own interests in psychological phenomena than are my narrow musings. Yet a second thought devoted to the semantics of control reveals underlying commonalities. For example, when older people begin to have problems with controlled …

Capacity And Procedural Accounts Of Impaired Memory In Depression, Paula T. Hertel, T. Meiser Jan 2000

Capacity And Procedural Accounts Of Impaired Memory In Depression, Paula T. Hertel, T. Meiser

Psychology Faculty Research

Findings of impaired memory in states of dysphoria or depression are summarized and subsumed under different accounts of mood-related memory deficits. Theoretical accounts based on the assumption of a storage system of limited capacity are compared to accounts which emphasize the role of procedures and strategies in attending and remembering. Two reanalyses of a recent experiment in the process-dissociation paradigm are reported. They address issues of dysphoria-related differences in automatic versus controlled uses of memory in a task of word-stem completion. The two reanalyses rest on different assumptions about the relation between automatic and controlled components, but they converge in …

Approche Cognitive De La Dépression: Pensées Intrusives Et Contrôle De La Pensée, Paula T. Hertel Jan 2000

Approche Cognitive De La Dépression: Pensées Intrusives Et Contrôle De La Pensée, Paula T. Hertel

Psychology Faculty Research

A Content Analysis Of Advertising In Magazines Directed At United States And United Kingdom Seniors, Ray Markham Smith Jan 2000

A Content Analysis Of Advertising In Magazines Directed At United States And United Kingdom Seniors, Ray Markham Smith

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The seniors (55+) market is a growing, attractive market. While this market represents almost one-fourth of the total population in the United States and is slightly higher in the United Kingdom today, this segment is projected to grow to approximately one-third of the population over the next quarter century.

Relative to their proportion of the total population, seniors, and especially women, have historically been underrepresented as general advertising models. When seniors are portrayed, they are often used in supporting roles or in a negatively stereotyped manner. While the aging process is associated with declines in mental and physical capabilities, and …

Building Bridges Iv: Of Cultures, Colors, And Clashes--Capturing The International In Delgado's Chronicles, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol

UF Law Faculty Publications

Sex, race, gender, sexuality, color, religion, language, nationality, ethnicity, culture, poverty - socially constructed categories, social tropes that relegate "others" to subordinated positions in the varied and various cultural and economic marketplaces of both global and local societies. Richard Delgado's transformational work engages all of these tropes insightfully, disturbingly, and illuminatingly. His rich literature conceptualizes persons as multidimensional, complex beings and exposes society as the pre-fabricated stage in which diverse interactions evolve. Delgado's epistemological stance is fluid, non-rigid, and grounded on subjectivity.

In this essay I will focus on Delgado's latest book When Equality Ends: Stories About Race and Resistance. …
