Supporting Those That Make Us A Success: How Community Relations Programs Effect Individual Shopping Choices, Danielle R. Lafayette
Supporting Those That Make Us A Success: How Community Relations Programs Effect Individual Shopping Choices, Danielle R. Lafayette
Masters Theses
Community relations programs have become extremely popular within organizations over the past several years. This manuscript will take a closer look at how these community relations programs influence the decision's individuals make when determining which organizations they want to support. Through a case study analysis Wal-Mart's affiliation with the Children's Miracle Network was analyzed in order to determine why organizations do community relations programs and the effect they have on an individual's choice in which organizations they support. The study consisted of a systematic random sample of 342 Charleston/Mattoon and surrounding area residents. The results indicated individuals are looking for …

This study examines the effects of social support in intergenerational relationships among women in families. The research examines ethnography as a study, some of the benefits of research done in intergenerational communication, changes in this communication over the time span of the intergenerational relationships, the transmission of this communication, social support, the positive effects of the phenomenon of this type of communication for all those participating in this dynamic process, and the heuristic value of this research. The participants were forty women in my extended family, and this study is based upon their answers to a questionnaire and focus group …
Elementary Teachers And School Psychologists Actual And Ideal Role Perceptions Of The School Psychologist, Blake E. Martin
Elementary Teachers And School Psychologists Actual And Ideal Role Perceptions Of The School Psychologist, Blake E. Martin
Masters Theses
Survey materials included original questionnaires utilizing categories proposed by Rechsly and Wilson (1997) and a job satisfaction scale utilized by Rechsly and Wilson (1995), and a demographic data sheet. Psychologists in Illinois (n=87) and Illinois K-6 elementary teachers (n=100) were surveyed as to actual and ideal roles and functions of the school psychologist. In addition school psychologists were questioned about job satisfaction. Results indicated a great deal of discrepancy between actual and ideal role from both the viewpoints of psychologists and teachers. Teachers also demonstrated little understanding of the actual role and functions of psychologists in the schools. Job satisfaction …
A Component Analysis Of Nondirective Play Therapy, Jane E. Wilson
A Component Analysis Of Nondirective Play Therapy, Jane E. Wilson
Masters Theses
We evaluated the effects of nondirective play therapy on the inappropriate play of three developmentally normal children with conduct problems . Specifically, we examined the effects of attention (contingent vs noncontingent) and the play environment (enriched vs impoverished) using a reversal design. Our goal was to isolate one of these two variables as the primary effective component of nondirective play therapy for a particular child. For two subjects, attention remained contingent upon inappropriate play across conditions and the play environment was manipulated. Inappropriate play increased for one of these participants in an impoverished environment. For the third participant, an actual …
Effects Of Guided Compliance On The Disruptive Behavior Of Two Students Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Nicole L. Weber
Effects Of Guided Compliance On The Disruptive Behavior Of Two Students Diagnosed With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Nicole L. Weber
Masters Theses
The current study attempted to determine the effects of the environmental manipulations of partial task instruction, whole task instruction, and guided compliance on the disruptive behavior of two students diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The participants included two elementary-aged students diagnosed with ADHD who were referred by their parent or legal guardian to a university-based summer assessment program. A functional analysis established that the disruptive behavior of both participants was motivated by contingent peer attention. Students were exposed to treatment conditions consisting of whole versus partial tasks as well as the guided compliance. While a single subject multi-element …

Land Use And Growth Impacts From Highway Capacity Increases, Thomas W. Sanchez
Land Use And Growth Impacts From Highway Capacity Increases, Thomas W. Sanchez
Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
This analysis examined the historical relationship between land use changes and the location of capacity increasing highway projects in the State of Oregon from 1970 to 1990. Aerial photography for 18 cities was used to delineate the extent of urban development in each time period. A geographic information system (GIS) was used to assemble the data. Using this data, a logit regression model tested the significance of geographic variables such as proximity to highway projects, land use zoning classification, city size, and other spatial characteristics. The analytical methods used in this study incorporated a set of commonly used techniques to …
Household Valuation Of Curbside Recycling, David M. Aadland, Arthur J. Caplan
Household Valuation Of Curbside Recycling, David M. Aadland, Arthur J. Caplan
Applied Economics Faculty Publications
This paper looks at the willingness to pay for and participate in a curbside recycling program based on a survey of 401 residents in Ogden, Utah. Modifying the Cameron and James (1987) econometric model to fit ordered-interval data, we estimate that the mean willingness to pay for curbside recycling is $2.05 per month, and that 72% of the residents would willingly participate in such a program. Furthermore, females, young people, college-educated, those currently recycling without monetary reward, those regarding recycling as beneficial to the community and nation, and those with relatively high incomes are willing to pay the most for …

Creating Local Bibliographic Databases: New Tools For Evidence-Based Health Care, Jeremiah H. Sable, Beth G. Carlin, James E. Andrews, Maryellen C. Sievert
School of Information Faculty Publications
The Internet has created new opportunities for librarians to present literature search results to clinicians. In order to take full advantage of these opportunities, libraries need to create locally maintained bibliographic databases. A simple method of creating a local bibliographic database and publishing it on the Web is described. The method uses off-the-shelf software and requires minimal programming. A hedge search strategy for outcome studies of clinical process interventions is created, and Ovid is used to search MEDLINE. The search results are saved and imported into EndNote libraries. The citations are modified, exported to a Microsoft Access database, and published …

The Relationship Between Burnout And Personality Dimensions In Domestic Violence Staff, Kristi J. Flatter
The Relationship Between Burnout And Personality Dimensions In Domestic Violence Staff, Kristi J. Flatter
Masters Theses
An exploratory study was conducted examining the relationship between burnout and personality dimensions. Sixty-nine employees from domestic violence agencies completed survey materials including the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), the NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), and a demographic and satisfaction questionnaire. A sample of domestic violence agencies was selected to participate from the state of Illinois using a directory listing all domestic violence agencies. Results suggested that symptoms of burnout occur both at a high and moderate (or average) level among this group of human service providers. Only one personal characteristic, age, was found to have a significant relationship with burnout. A …
The Effects Of Diagnostic Status, Assessment Information, And Intervention Type On Teachers' Acceptability Of Treatment Recommendations, Rebecca Hassell Fogarty
The Effects Of Diagnostic Status, Assessment Information, And Intervention Type On Teachers' Acceptability Of Treatment Recommendations, Rebecca Hassell Fogarty
Masters Theses
This study explored the effects of diagnostic status, assessment information and intervention type on teachers' acceptability of treatment recommendations in an analog procedure. Teachers from both a suburban and a rural school district read one of eight vignettes that varied diagnostic status (ADHD vs. no diagnosis), assessment information (traditional vs. functional), and intervention type (behavioral vs. pharmacological). Teachers' ratings of treatment acceptability were examined as a function of diagnostic status, assessment information and intervention type. Results indicated a significant main effect for assessment information, with the traditional method rated as more acceptable than the functional method, and a significant main …
Current Trends In Psychological Testing, Kimberle L. S. Crawford
Current Trends In Psychological Testing, Kimberle L. S. Crawford
Masters Theses
Discussions about the adequacy of psychological measurement and assessment can quickly become controversial therefore; I expect some strong reaction to portions of this manuscript. Debates about the usefulness of criticism of psychological testing are longstanding: Even early psychologists such as Cattell and Jastrow disagreed on this issue. To be clear, I do not believe that use of contemporary tests should cease. I share the view that "psychological tests often provide the fairest and most accurate method of making important decisions" (K. R. Murphy & Davidshoffer, 1988, p. xii).
My first purpose, then, is to provide a historical survey of relevant …

Aggressive Communication, Parental Communication, And Sibling Communication, Kristi K. Eustice
Aggressive Communication, Parental Communication, And Sibling Communication, Kristi K. Eustice
Masters Theses
The family is often seen as the center of instruction for children and the base for learning communication patterns. Aggressive communication is often seen in the family, especially as a parenting method. In this thesis, the current state of available literature on aggressive communication in the family is examined. This includes parenting styles, communication relationships between one parent and one child, and the negative effects verbal aggressive communication has on children. A t-test is used to research the responses of 100 students who have verbally aggressive parents. At 2.59, the t-test supports the hypothesis that parenting communication styles concerning aggressiveness …
The Effects Of Empathy On Speech Ratings, Jill Mcnamara
The Effects Of Empathy On Speech Ratings, Jill Mcnamara
Masters Theses
This research project tests whether empathy has an affect upon ratings of speeches. First the rater' s individual level of empathy is surveyed. Next, the many different definitions of empathy are broken down into cognitive and affective perspectives and altruistic motivations. The likelihood of empathy being a dispositional or situational trait is discussed. Various methods used to train individuals to enhance their empathic skills through behavior observation and schools and how effective these methods have proven to be is identified. Empathy was then examined as to gender affects an individual's ability to experience that emotion. Using two different speeches, one …
Cognitive Complexity Of Heterosexual Arguments On The Civil Rights And Liberties Of Homosexuals, Kristopher Michael Goetz
Cognitive Complexity Of Heterosexual Arguments On The Civil Rights And Liberties Of Homosexuals, Kristopher Michael Goetz
Masters Theses
This study examined how heterosexuals argue about the civil rights and liberties of homosexuals and how various factors interacted in determining how complex heterosexuals' arguments are about two issues; the freedom of homosexuals to express their sexual orientation in public and the status of same-sex marriage. The factors examined were: value conflict (conflict in values experienced when dealing with an issue), issue familiarity (knowledge of the pros and cons of an issue), and perceived status (the perception that one's views are shared by most people or by only a few).
The value conflict experienced by the participants was assessed when …

Growth And Performance Of Broiler Chicks During The Starter And Grower Phases In Phase-Feeding, L. Niki Loupe, Jason L. Emmert
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a nutrition program referred to as “phase-feeding” (PF) over the first 6 weeks posthatching. Diets were formulated using amino acid recommendations from the National Research Council (NRC) (1994) or from linear regression equations generated from best estimates of lysine (Lys), sulfur amino acid (SAA), and threonine (Thr) requirements. Regression equations were used to predict weekly Lys, SAA, and Thr requirements for use in a PF regimen that involved lowering amino acid levels following each respective week of the experiment, resulting in six diets fed over the 6-week period. Over the entire …

Reproductive Behavior Of The Emu, Reema A. Persad, Douglas James, Nicholas B. Anthony
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Members of a flock of male and female emus were observed in an ethological experiment designed to investigate trends in reproductive behavior exhibited during the North American mating season, which lasts from October to mid-March. Observations were made at dawn, noon, and dusk from December 1999 to mid-March 2000, and the only behaviors that were consistently expressed during these times were pecking, strutting, exclusive, and male and female sexual activities (defined in text). Though statistical significance was found between male strutting behavior and female sexual activity in the December observation period, no overall significance or significance at other observation periods …

Repatriation has compromised the opportunity to directly examine skeletons and to apply new diagnostic criteria and techniques. Pre-repatriation approaches to non-metric data acquisition, must make a number of assumptions: ( I ) Phenomena must be correctly identitied and segregated; (2) Criteria for severity must be specific to the phenomena studied; and (3) As criteria for disease rewgnition may change with time, it is valuable only as long as the raw data is also recorded. As part of data preservation, x-rays and CD-ROM images were recorded for skeletons trom Nebraska sites undergoing repatriation. This report concentrates on four of them 250K …

Response To Critique Of The Claim Of Cannibalism At Cowboy Wash, Patricia M. Lambert, Banks L. Leonard, Brian R. Billman, Richard A. Marlar, Margaret E. Newman, Karl J. Reinhard
Karl Reinhard Publications
The original authors of Billman et af. (2000) are joined by three other analysts from the Cowboy Wash research team to respond to the critique of this article by Dongoske et af. (2000). Dongoske and his coauthors state that Billman et af. (2000) failed to test alternative hypotheses or to consider alternative explanations for the findings at 5MTJOOJO and similar sites. The original authors point out that alternative hypotheses were examined and rejected, leaving a violent episode of cannibalism as the most plausible explanation for the remains found at 5MTJOOJO. Dongoske et af. also question many aspects of the osteological, …
The Role Of Mummy Studies In Paleoparasitology, Adauto Araujo, Karl J. Reinhard, Luiz Fernando Ferreira
The Role Of Mummy Studies In Paleoparasitology, Adauto Araujo, Karl J. Reinhard, Luiz Fernando Ferreira
Karl Reinhard Publications
Paieoparasitology has advance during the past decade to the status of a statistically based science focused on problems of disease ecology and geographic distribution of parasitism. For most of its development, paleoparasitology has focused on the analysis of coprolites and latrine sediments. During the past few years, mummies have been increasingly included in paleoparasitology studies. We evaluate in this paper the interpretive value of mummies relative to other sources of paleoparasitological data.
EI estudio de la paleoparasitologia ha logrado transformarse, en esta ultima decada, en una ciencia basada en la estadistica, enfocada a temas tales como la ecologia de enfermedades …
