Born in Turin in 1910. Very antifascist-saw Peronism as reply to fascism. Father died when she was about 10 years old so, was brought up by mother. Women couldn't study at that time, so she attended the Liceo Femenino, which didn't feed into the university, and then stayed home for a year. She and her cousin, who would go on to win a Nobel Prize, and who was brought up in an even more restricted fashion, studied for one year to be able to pass certain courses to get into the university. She experienced much prejudice in medical school, but …
The Concept Of Hope In Social Work Practice And Education, Wayne Luebbert
The Concept Of Hope In Social Work Practice And Education, Wayne Luebbert
Theses and Graduate Projects
The concept of hope has been and continues to be part of the research literature in many human service fields, such as medicine, psychology and nursing. The research on hope in these fields has shown that its presence can have multiple benefits for persons in differing forms of distress. However, any discussion on hope has been conspicuously absent from most social work literature for almost forty years. This qualitative study has been designed to begin a begin a discussion on the role of hope in social work practice and education. Seven social workers were interviewed on their understanding of hope, …

The Role Of Death Qualification In Venirepersons' Evaluations Of Aggravating And Mitigating Circumstances In Capital Trials, Brooke M. Butler
The Role Of Death Qualification In Venirepersons' Evaluations Of Aggravating And Mitigating Circumstances In Capital Trials, Brooke M. Butler
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Death qualification is a part of voir dire that is unique to capital trials. Unlike all other litigation, capital jurors must affirm their willingness to impose both legal standards (either life in prison or the death penalty). Jurors who assert they are able to do so are deemed "death-qualified" and are eligible for capital jury service; jurors who assert that they are unable to do so are deemed "excludable" or "scrupled" and are barred from hearing a death penalty case. During the penalty phase in capital trials, death-qualified jurors weigh the aggravators (i.e., arguments for death) against the mitigators (i.e., …

Risk And Resilience Factors Linked To Problem Behavior Among Urban Culturally Diverse Adolescents, Stephanie L. Crosby
Risk And Resilience Factors Linked To Problem Behavior Among Urban Culturally Diverse Adolescents, Stephanie L. Crosby
Theses and Graduate Projects
This study examined several risk and resilience factors associated with sexual intercourse, gang involvement, and alcohol and drug use among 332 urban culturally diverse adolescents aged 12-16 years. In general different patterns of risk and resilience factors were found to predict the three problem behaviors. Delinquency was the only factor that was significantly linked to sexual intercourse, gang involvement, and substance use.
Discriminant analyses supported that delinquency was differentially associated with low problem vs. high problem urban adolescents. In addition when compared to the high problem urban youth the resilient youth tended to have higher academic competence and intact two …
Mid-Summer Beauty In Sport: The Events And The People, Richard C. Crepeau
Mid-Summer Beauty In Sport: The Events And The People, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
We are without a doubt deeply into the dog days of summer. That catatonic look brought on by unrelieved heat is commonplace. The celebrations of the fourth of July, the Wimbledon fortnight, and baseball's All-Star game are all behind us. The grind of baseball's pennant races are beginning to take their toll. Everyone seems to be a bit testier than usual, some even more so than Roger Clemens.

Quality Of Life And Panic Disorder, Rebecca J. Wyatt Kinnander
Quality Of Life And Panic Disorder, Rebecca J. Wyatt Kinnander
Theses and Graduate Projects
Panic disorder has been associated with pervasive social and health consequences similar to or greater than those associated with major depression. Studies have been found that support findings concerning diminished quality of life for persons currently being treated, or shortly after treatment for anxiety disorders, but little is said in regards to quality of life (QOL) in years that follow treatment. This research project attempts to ascertain if there is a difference between the findings of previous studies with this more recent examination of QOL in panic disorder patients. Furthermore, implications for practice show use of quality of life assessment …

The Power Of One: The Effect Of One Athlete's Behavior On A Sport, Jennifer L. Field
Theses and Dissertations
This is a study of whether or not the effects of one athlete's behavior are broad enough to be felt throughout a sport. The researcher focused on three athletes whose behavior was thought to have left a permanent scar on the three sports involved. The athletes were: (1) Pete Rose, who was part of the Philadelphia Phillies 1980 World Series team and later became the manager of the Cincinnati Reds, who was accused of betting on baseball games, (2) Mike Tyson, former undisputed heavy weight champion of the world, who was convicted of rape and bit the ear of opponent …

Baseball Bashes Itself In Blue Ribbon Report, Richard C. Crepeau
Baseball Bashes Itself In Blue Ribbon Report, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Clearly the biggest surprise in this week's blue ribbon panel report on the state of baseball is the fact that George Will prefers a command economy over free enterprise, and that he is foursquare in favor of installing socialist principles into the very fabric of the national pastime. It makes one wonder who really won the Cold War. Say it ain't so, Geo!
