Review Of Pigs, Profits, And Rural Communities Edited By Kendall M. Thu And E. Paul Durrenberger, Mark S. Honeyman Oct 2001

Review Of Pigs, Profits, And Rural Communities Edited By Kendall M. Thu And E. Paul Durrenberger, Mark S. Honeyman

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

These are historic times of rapid change in US agriculture, particularly the swine production industry. Rapid change creates controversy. Controversy surrounding the industrialization of the US swine industry is often over-simplified as a two-sided debate. In Pigs, Profits, and Rural Communities, editors Kendall Thu and Paul Durrenberger-anthropologists-effectively gather and present the multi-dimensional depth and breadth of the profoundly rapid change in the swine industry with a collection of eleven perspectives plus their own introductory comments.

Review Of The Economics Of Organic Grain And Soybean Production In The Midwestern United States By Rick Welsh, Glenn A. Helmers

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts, this short report, its foreword claims, "synthesizes and interprets economic studies of organic grain and soybean production by Midwestern universities." In so doing it reviews and analyzes previously completed studies from Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota, along with two earlier studies of the Corn Belt.

The titles of the chapters that follow the introduction offer a clear idea of the report's attempt at coverage: " The Growing Organic Industry"; "Is Organic Agriculture Productive and Profitable?'; "Review of Midwestern Organic Grain and Soybean Studies"; "Additional Considerations"; and "Policy Implications." The work was completed …

Review Of Communities, Development And Sustainability Across Canada Edited By John T. Pierce And Ann Dale, Neil Gilson

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences

Communities, Development and Sustainability Across Canada is intended to serve as a synthesis of work on how Canadian communities can achieve sustainable development. Twelve essays by different authors discuss diverse theoretical and analytical perspectives and promote a variety of actions related to implementing sustainable development at the community level. The editors' introduction promises that the book will "highlight the importance of community as a critical link in achieving sustainable development." To this end, contributors were instructed to provide readers with both "retrospective and prospective analyses" and to make concrete proposals for action. Individual authors responded by producing work that consistently …

This is Old Dominion University's second annual "State of the Region" Report. While it represents the work of many individuals connected in various ways to the university, the Report does not constitute an "official" viewpoint of the University, or it's president, Dr. Roseann Runte.

This year's Report was produced with the goal of making Hampton Roads an even better place to live. Those who know and love the region of Hampton Roads frequently boast of its numerous strengths and successes, but we do so with the understanding that it would be possible for us to improve the region's performance in …

Zen And The Art Of Stacks Maintenance: Rethinking An Ancient Practice, Margo Smith, Melissa Laning

The Southeastern Librarian

The University of Louisville Libraries’ 2000-2001 Strategic Plan includes specific objectives related to improving the delivery of materials to users. This broad objective covers many strategies ranging from increasing electronic access, improving web page design, using vendor-supplied cataloging records and reallocating funds to high demand subject areas. Undergraduate user demand for monographs remains high. Therefore, reducing the number of days required to shelve new acquisitions and to re-shelve circulated items is an important objective for the library. Leo Egghe notes that, “Shelving and keeping library shelves in order is very important and is basic for the use of a library.” …

Public Access To Legal Resources On The Internet, Alice M. Mccanless Oct 2001

Public Access To Legal Resources On The Internet, Alice M. Mccanless

The Southeastern Librarian

In the not so distant past, before the Internet, doing legal research necessitated access to either a substantial law collection or one of the expensive legal databases, Lexis-Nexis or Westlaw. That limited legal reference to law librarians, some special librarians and reference librarians at large university or public libraries. The Internet has changed all of that, giving any library with an Internet connection access to a wealth of current law, especially at the state and federal level.

Based on a presentation at the Joint Conference of the Georgia Council of Media Organizations and Southeastern Library Association on October 12, 2000.

Testing The Design Of A Library Information Gateway, W. Bede Mitchell, Laura Davidson, Virginia Branch, Lynne Lysiak

The Southeastern Librarian

In autumn of 1999, the library World Wide Websites at Appalachian State University and Georgia Southern University had been in place for more than a year, and many library users reported that certain aspects of the sites’ designs were confusing. In order to alleviate the confusion, librarians from the two universities decided to redesign the sites by determining the greatest sources of confusion. To do this, we studied how patrons used the web sites by way of user-centered usability testing.

The Emerging Reference Paradigm: A Vision Of Reference Services In A Complex Information Environment, Scott Mandernack, John W. Fritch

Library Faculty Research and Publications

The emerging reference paradigm in a complex, technologically rich information environment tends toward a more deliberate blending of the conservative and liberal philosophies of reference. As key agents in the advancement of society and culture, librarians must recognize the value of community and the social context of information in providing services that support and enhance the full range of contemporary user needs.

Faith And Health: What Do We Know?, Thomas G. Plante Oct 2001

Faith And Health: What Do We Know?, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

There has been a great deal of interest in the relationship between religious faith and health for thousands of years. Regardless of religious tradition, many have sought religious guidance and spiritual support to help prevent, recover from, or cope with both mental and physical health problems. In fact, it was the healing miracles of Jesus that resulted in so much commotion during the early part of his ministry. "The blind see, the deaf hear, the lame walk…" clearly highlights the relationship between faith and health.
