A Organização Comum Do Mercado De Açúcar Na União Europeia: Estrutura, Instrumentos Regulatórios E Interesses, Heitor Moura Filho

Heitor Moura Filho

The subsidies and protection structure of the sugar sectors in the European Union originated from the individual national protection systems, unified with the creation of the Common Agricultural Policy. The main form of protection for agricultural products in the EU are the Common Organisations of the Market, which fix rules for planting, sale, prices, subsidies, storage and foreign trade. The COM for Sugars is based on an intervention price, at present quite higher than international prices. To determine who benefits from this intervention price, production quotas are established and distributed to each Member-State, producer and raw-material supplier. In parallel, levies …

Rural Idaho: Challenged To Change, Andrus Center For Public Policy

Research and Reports

On November 8 and 9, 2001, city, county, state, and federal officials; farmers; ranchers; reporters; environmentalists; and a wide variety of interested citizens met at Albertson College of Idaho to discuss the future of rural Idaho. They were brought together, in the words of the Andrus Center chairman, Cecil Andrus, “to focus on the challenges that we face in rural Idaho and on the solutions that just might be available to us.” Carolyn Washburn, Executive Editor of the Idaho Statesman, described the conference goal: “to find options that not only bring jobs and money but that also honor the traditions …

Media Images And Women’S Self-Evaluations: Social Context And Importance Of Attractiveness As Moderators, Donna Henderson-King, Eaaron Henderson-King, Lisa Hoffmann Nov 2001

Media Images And Women’S Self-Evaluations: Social Context And Importance Of Attractiveness As Moderators, Donna Henderson-King, Eaaron Henderson-King, Lisa Hoffmann

Peer Reviewed Articles

The current research examines the effects of exposure to ideal images on women’s self-evaluations, taking into account the moderating influence of social contextual and individual difference factors. In Study 1, women were exposed to either ideal images of women or neutral images. Participants viewed these images in a context in which (a) men were not present, (b) men were present, or (c) men were present and made comments about some of the images. Results indicated that participants’ weight esteem was negatively affected in the ideal image/men present condition but that those in the ideal image/men comment condition actually exhibited higher …

Transcendentalists & Friends, University Libraries--University Of South Carolina

Rare Books & Special Collections Publications

This catalog accompanied the exhibit which displays a portion of the Joel Myerson Collection of Nineteenth-century American Literature. It brings to the library comprehensive collections of first editions for Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), Margaret Fuller (1810-1850), Theodore Parker (1810-1860), Walt Whitman (1819-1892), and Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), along with manuscripts, letters, proofs, later and posthumous editions, and associated scholarship. With these core collections are smaller collections for lesser-known writers of the Transcendentalist movement, such as Christopher Pearse Cranch (1813-1892), significant groups of early editions from other writers of the period such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, Bronson and Louisa May …

Policing Kentucky's School Children: Issues And Trends, Peter B. Kraska, Matthew D. Dimichele

Kentucky Justice and Safety Research Bulletin

The purpose of this research bulletin is to document the scope and nature of an important dimension of the school safety movement--the degree to which schools in Kentucky are being "policed" by public police agencies. A shift toward having an active police presence in our public schools, an unprecedented and significiant development, should be examined carefully.

Bending The Rules Of “Professional” Display: Emotional Improvisation In Caregiver Performances, Jayne M. Morgan, Kathleen J. Krone Nov 2001

Bending The Rules Of “Professional” Display: Emotional Improvisation In Caregiver Performances, Jayne M. Morgan, Kathleen J. Krone

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Organizational norms of emotional expression are open to negotiation through improvised performances, as employees may bend or break emotion rules to gain more leeway in expressiveness and participate in the development of their own role identities in the workplace. In this ethnographic study, a dramaturgical perspective is used to analyze the processes and outcomes of emotional improvisation as observed among nurses, technicians, and physicians in a cardiac care center. It was found that the emphasis on maintaining a “professional” appearance in caregiving largely constrains actors to perform along their scripted roles. Results are discussed in terms of practical implications for …

The Power Of Citation Searching, Carol Tenopir

School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works

IT MAY BE EFFECTIVE to find relevant literature by searching for articles by subject descriptors or keywords, but subject searching is not the only way. When authors of scholarly pieces cite relevant sources in the references or notes sections of their articles, researchers can thus extend their literature searches.

Equilibrium Selection In Global Games With Strategic Complementarities, David M. Frankel, Stephen Morris, Ady Pauzner Nov 2001

Equilibrium Selection In Global Games With Strategic Complementarities, David M. Frankel, Stephen Morris, Ady Pauzner

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study games with strategic complementarities, arbitrary numbers of players and actions, and slightly noisy payoff signals. We prove limit uniqueness: as the signal noise vanishes, the game has a unique strategy profile that survives iterative dominance. This generalizes a result of Carlsson and van Damme (1993) for two player, two action games. The surviving profile, however, may depend on fine details of the structure of the noise. We provide sufficient conditions on payoffs for there to be noise-independent selection.

Differentiated Products Demand Systems From A Combination Of Micro And Macro Data: The New Car Market, Steven T. Berry, James Levinsohn, Ariel Pakes Nov 2001

Differentiated Products Demand Systems From A Combination Of Micro And Macro Data: The New Car Market, Steven T. Berry, James Levinsohn, Ariel Pakes

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In this paper we provide an algorithm for estimating characteristic based demand models from alternative data sources, and apply it to new data on the market for passenger vehicles. We find that, provided care is taken in constructing the demand system and rich enough data are available, the characteristic based model can both rationalize existing results and provide realistic out of sample predictions.

The Optimal Concentration Of Creditors, Ivo Welch, Arturo Bris Nov 2001

The Optimal Concentration Of Creditors, Ivo Welch, Arturo Bris

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

There are situations in which dispersed creditors (e.g., public creditors) have more difficulties and higher costs when collecting their claims in financial distress than concentrated creditors (e.g., banks). Under this assumption, our model predicts that measures of debt concentration relate [a] positively to creditors’ chosen aggregate debt collection expenditures; [b] positively to management’s chosen expenditures to avoid paying; [c] positively to total net litigation costs/waste in financial distress; and [d] positively to accomplished claim recovery by creditors (to which we present some preliminary favorable empirical evidence). Under additional assumptions, measures of debt concentration relate [e] positively to intrinsic firm quality; …

Economic Reforms And Growth Prospects In India, Lawrence, R. Klein, Thangavel Palanivel Nov 2001

Economic Reforms And Growth Prospects In India, Lawrence, R. Klein, Thangavel Palanivel

CAPS Working Paper Series

Starting in June 1991, the Indian government introduced a number of liberalising measures, including significant tariff reduction, abolition of all quantitative restrictions on non-consumer goods, unification of the exchange rates, and adoption of a liberal set of rules for FDI, and introduction of current account convertibility. While the industrial reforms seek to bring about a greater competitive domestic environment, the trade reforms seek to improve international competitiveness. The private sector is allowed in many industries that were earlier exclusively reserved for the public sector. In these areas, the public sector will have to compete with the private sector, even though …

中國自由貿易區的構想 : Wto 框架下中國大陸與港、澳、台經貿關係展望, 遲福林 Nov 2001

中國自由貿易區的構想 : Wto 框架下中國大陸與港、澳、台經貿關係展望, 遲福林

CAPS Working Paper Series
